Trot singer Wang So Yeon, who has been in the music business since 1988, has come back this year with her eighth studio album. It has been a year since her seventh. Included in the album are twelve new numbers and five instrumentals which husky-voice Wang easily masters.

The title track of the album is “That Woman”, which is an upbeat dance track. The song starts off with synthesized sounds which transition to brass instruments. Wang So Yeon’s vocals are husky and full of strength, as this is what she is known for. In addition, the song is about the heartbreak love brings, a theme everyone can relate to.

Some songs to watch out for are “Appeal” and “I Want to Love”. “Appeal” is a slow-tempo number that shows off Wang So Yeon’s vocals. The song, which is about a woman pleading her loved one to wait a bit longer before breaking up, is full of emotion and listeners can sense this through Wang’s voice. The other song, “I Want to Love”, is more upbeat and fans of Korean pop music may show a liking for it, as it is very reminiscent to songs of popular K-pop artistes such as SG Wannabe and Seeya. The song is in minor key and Wang sings this with much ease.

Overall, Wang So Yeon sang all the songs well. However, because the songs are more suited to adults and because they are of the trot genre, they may not appeal to many younger fans. That said, I still recommend everyone who is interested in Korean music to give this album a try. Who knows, you may have a liking for trot music!
