Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2011 – April Week 5

We were predicting two prominent boy bands CN Blue and Big Bang battling for No. 1 this week.  CN Blue’s “Intuition” was still leading by a large margin despite staying on top for three weeks already.  Big Bang’s “Love Song” was our hot shot debut at No. 4 and already won the top spot in various TV and internet rankings.  However, these two songs had to settle for No. 3 and No. 4 respectively.

To the surprise of many fans, it was two girl groups ending up at the top two spots this week, and both groups have never had a top song on our chart before.  4minute’s “Mirror Mirror” moves up one more spot to become their first chart topping hit here in soompi.  It was not totally a surprise as they did win in M!Countdown.  Rainbow’s “To Me” is more of a shocker at No. 2 as they moved past CN Blue and Big Bang.  This song has very strong showing in all our sources, easily become Rainbow’s biggest hit to date.

The top 10 is still the same ten songs this week with not much movements.  It is almost guaranteed to be different next week as F(x) has the highest debut at No. 12 with “Pinocchio (Danger)”.  This song already won the Music Bank K-Chart this week and tops nearly all internet charts.  If airplay scores come in good next week they will certainly be a challenger for No. 1 soon.

Also, 2NE1’s main vocalist Park Bom debuts at No. 17 with her solo hit “Don’t Cry”.  This is another song that is expected to be in the top 10 next week, along with F(x) and rookie group Dal Shabet’s second hit “Pink Rocket”.

Solid – 이밤의 끝을 잡고  (Holding Onto The End Of This Night)
Genre: R&B Ballad
External from soompi image
Album: Solid Vol. 2 (1995) Track 3
Watch: MV
Comment: Solid was an R&B trio in the 1990s formed by three Korean Americans Kim Jo Han, Jung Jae Yoon, and Lee Joon.  They were all from California.  Perhaps one of the very first musicians to inject R&B elements into Korean pop music, Solid had a brief but memorable career that paved the ways for many vocal groups afterwards.  They released four albums from 1993 to 1997.  After Solid disbanded, Kim Jo Han pursued a solo career and is still active today.  Jung Jae Yoon became a producer and is well known all over Asia.  Lee Joon went back to the States.  “Holding Onto The End Of This Night” is Solid’s most well known song and has become a classic oldie.  Many of today’s artists, including Fly To The Sky, Yoo Hee Yeol, 2AM, and SHINee has performed this song live on stage as a tribute to Solid.
