Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2011 – May Week 1

[Listen] Soompi Chart Top 50 – May 2011, Week 1

A trio of girl groups occupied the top three spots of our chart this week, with 4minute’s “Mirror Mirror” repeating as No.1. The new song from F(x), “Pinocchio(Danger)” is closing in quickly, moving up ten spots to No. 2 in just its second week on the chart. It has a very high chance of overtaking 4minute next week.

Rainbow’s “To Me” retreats one spot to No. 3 this week, completing the girl group dominance on the top three, at the expense of Big Bang’s “Love Song” which remained at No. 4 for the third straight week. The top four songs clearly outdistanced themselves from the rest of the chart this week, as the gap between No. 4 and 5 is over 200 points!

Two other new songs in the top 10 this week: At No.7 is 2NE1’s main vocalist Park Bom. Her solo hit “Don’t Cry” rises ten spots to No. 7. This song had a perfect score on the internet rankings. However it is hurt by zero performance on music programs, which unfortunately will limit the position of this song.

At No. 9 is rookie girl group A Pink’s debut single “Don’t Know”. While these days many newer girl groups go with sexy and fierce stage image, A Pink is turning back the clock to a pure and innocent image and has been well accepted by fans and media.

In this segment we go back in time to re-visit charts of the same week in past years. The Soompi music chart began in January 2005. At first we had only 20 songs and later expanded to 50 songs.

When I went back to research for past charts, it was surprising to see that the same group occupied the top spot of our chart in each year during the first week of may in 2005, 2006, and 2007.  Which group is this?  Fans may not guess it right. They are SG Wannabe. They hit No. 1 in May first week of 2005 with “Sin And Punishment”, in 2006 May first week with “Partner For Life”, and in 2007 May first week with “Arirang”.

These three songs are all great songs and some of SG’s biggest hits and were all written by famous songwriter Cho Young Soo. Today I want to talk about “Arirang”, the title song of SG Wannabe’s fourth album. At that time (and still now!) SG Wannabe has already established themselves as one of the top vocal groups in Korea and at their peak of their career. However, there are critics saying while their vocals are great, most of their songs sound the same. It is about the same time that songwriter Cho Young Soo was searching for new ideas on his music. What better than to test it out with his top client!  As most people know, “Arirang” is a traditional Korean folk song. Cho Young Soo incorporated this idea with a pop ballad song while having traditional background instruments and even vocals.  The result is amazing!  “Arirang” spent four weeks on top of our chart in 2007.

The music video of “Arirang” features a 22-minute long movie like style which is popular among Korean songs. The MV stars Ok Ju Hyun and Lee Bum Soo.  Watch it here: Part 1 Part 2 Part 3
