Soompi Drama of the Week: “City Hunter”

Last week, we bade farewell to one of this year’s most beloved romantic comedies. “The Greatest Love” was replaced with a youth melodrama titled “Heartstrings,” starring Hallyu stars Jung Yong Hwa and Park Shin Hye. Many were wondering if Lee Min Ho’s City Hunter” would be able to take home the number one spot in the Wednesday-Thursday drama viewership ratings now that Dokko Jin (Cha Seung Won) and Gu Ae Jung (Gong Hyo Jin) had their happy ending.

This week’s episodes of “City Hunter” were possibly two of the most intense episodes aired yet. In short, the episodes had a lot of revelations. Yoon Sung (Lee Min Ho) discovers that  Nana (Park Min Young) knows about his true identity. Nana learns the truth about Shik Joong (Kim Sang Ho)and her parents’ accident. Noble prosecutor Yong Joo (Lee Joon Hyuk) finds out his father’s dark secrets. Daddy dearest Jin Pyo (Kim Sang Joong) discovers Yoon Sung’s “distractions.” Yoon Sung realizes that his mother didn’t abandon him, but that his father kidnapped, lied, and manipulated him. Lastly, both father and son realize that they no longer walk the same path to find justice.

The action blockbuster drama had its share of angst with dramatic happenings this week – ahem…involving dark rooms, guns, and blood. However, they were nicely balanced with romantic moments, like the intimate scene where Yoon Sung gently washed Nana’s hair.

Meanwhile, “City Hunter” set its new record highs in  viewership ratings with 18.4% and 18.8% (AGB Nielsen) on Wednesday and Thursday. Sung Yuri’sRomance Town” and Jung Yong Hwa’s “Heartstrings” finished a distant second and third respectively.

For those of you who have been following the drama, what are your thoughts? Consider this your “open thread” to rant and rave about the “drama of the week!”
