Netizen voting for the 2011 MAMA (Mnet Asian Music Awards) is in full throttle at this very moment but comparisons of some of the number of votes are very surprising.
The voting process is being held at the official MAMA website and girl group A Pink is currently leading for the “Best New Female Artist” category. At 4:00 PM on November 7, A Pink received more than 600,000 votes. At the same time, for the “Best Dance Performance Female Group,” SNSD took the lead.
However, SNSD only had around 440,000 votes. DBSK, who was leading for the same category for male groups, had a total of 470,000 votes and Super Junior, who was leading for “Best Male Group” had a total of 480,000 votes.
Of course, there are a lot of differences between each category but the difference in number of votes is quite unexpected. Rookie group A Pink had over 600,000 votes while veteran groups such as SNSD, DBSK and Super Junior had only 400,000 – 500,000 votes. It seems like the A Pink fans worked very hard to get many votes in for their favorite group.
Other interesting facts from the current MAMA voting results are that the number one spot for similar categories are all different.
For example, for the “Best Male Group” category, Super Junior took the number one spot with about 487,000 votes, while DBSK took the number two spot with 480,000 votes. And then, for the “Best Dance Performance Male Group” category, DBSK leads with 480,000 votes while Super Junior comes in second with 475,000 votes. That means that approximately 12,000 Super Junior fans voted for someone else for this category.
The same goes for the female categories. For the “Best Female Group” category, 2NE1 leads with about 444,000 votes and SNSD is the runner-up at around 414,000 votes. And for the “Best Dance Performance Female Group,” SNSD takes the lead with around 443,000 votes while 2NE1 takes second with about 410,000 votes.
People may think that SNSD fans will vote for SNSD for every category. But that is not the case. Fans are voting for multiple artists. Because of that, SNSD, 2NE1, DBSK, and Super Junior may all be able to attend the actual awards show. In the past, there were many instances where artists did not attend the event if they were not the winners.
Upon registering for the Mnet website, each person may vote once a day for MAMA. The netizen vote has a weight of 20% for categories related to the artist such as the “Best New Male/Female Artist,” and “Artist of the Year” categories and a weight of 10% for categories such as “Song of the Year.” For the full list of nominees, click here.
