Block B’s Controversial Behaviour in Thailand Outrages 2PM Members

Block B’s Controversial Behaviour in Thailand Outrages 2PM Members

Recently Block B had an interview on a television show in Thailand.

In the interview, Block B showed a careless attitude during the interval of questions, in which you can see the members playing and goofing around and even laying down over the table during the televisive interview. The situation got worse when the interviewer asked their thoughts about the recent flood going on in Thailand. Member and leader Zico answered, “I know about it. I was pretending I didn’t but I do.”

Then, they said, “We wish Thai people would heal the damage in their hearts through financial donations, and all we have is money” while another member claimed, “How about 7000 won?” (6.00 USD) and then they all laughed.

The controversy of their comments rely in the fact that members were actually making too much fun of the situation by saying that they could only help with 6 dollars and they were being disrespectful and rude about the situation pretending they didn’t know anything. These comments made Thailand people upset and offended.

And also it started an outrage over 2PM members who expressed their feelings on the situation. As some of you may know, Thailand is like a second home for 2PM members since Nichkhun is originally from Thailand. He expressed on his Twitter account, “As a Thai person I feel offended by those who speak about the Thailand floods without thinking. Also instead of coming to Thailand and acting mindlessly, please respect the country’s manners, and only act in a proper way.”

Not just Nichkhun tweeted about the incident, but also fellow members Junho and Chansung and also Tiger JK. Junho wrote, “ I won’t say who it is but those actions and that attitude are embarrassing. As a fellow Korean, I wish they would learn that one bad action doesn’t affect just themselves but also affect those around them. It’s something I’m saying as a person and a sunbae,” while Chansung said, “Even when you try to avoid these kind of situations and you may seem like having a careless attitude which happens inevitably, if you don’t pay attention to others and hurt them and act like there’s no one as great as you that is careless. This is beyond a mistake and just proves that you’re that type of person. Have some shame.”

Tiger JK expressed his support towards Nichkhun’s tweet by saying, “Not everybody like that bro. Keep speaking that truth tho!” Fans also expressed their feelings towards this situation, recalling Zico’s attitude as, “Irresponsible,” “they forgot how to act in an interview” and “where’s their professionalism?” This incident has definitely arisen some hot topics again over Block B’s capability to handle or being involved in controversies.

After the incident, all the members expressed individually their apologies on the group’s daum cafe. Zico wrote, “I am deeply sorry for what our bad behaviour caused in Thailand due to the flood going on. Despite of being an adult, I feel sorry of my actions, I was ridiculous and ignorant. There’s no excuse that can grant me forgiveness. I am deeply sorry once again.”

Jaehyo expressed his apology saying, “I feel sorry and I deeply apologize bending my head down. I am so sorry for the citizens in Thailand. And I feel sorry for the Koreans, for having dishonored the image of our country. As the hyung and older man of the group, I didn’t act properly and assumed the responsibility for what was going on. I feel embarrased of myself and I’m gonna reflect for what we caused with this offense.”

Also, members Taeil and Kyung wrote their apology stating that, “they should be in charge of the younger members instead of not paying attention,” and also that, “we were extremely careless, we feel sorry and we deeply apologize for this incident. Our playful personality wasn’t appropiate this time.”

What do you think about this whole situation?

Block-b has a 7 frisky, mischievous and full of vigor members.. I do understand that what they did is wrong. like the saying goes "boys will always be boys" and they're the perfect example of it at that time. Everyone of us tend to make mistakes, wether its accidentally or purposely but the most important thing is that we learn from that mistake and we apologized to the people we hurt/discourage..

@btobgot7winnerbtsblock-b Let me clarify before I begin: I am neither a Block B fan nor a hater. I am, however, fluent in Korean, and would like to explain to everyone on this page the real reasons behind the criticism that Block B received through this interview.

First things first: the actions and general attitude that the boys were exuding during the interview, from beginning to end, was not just "casual" or "bored". It was downright stuck-up and rude. When asked the question of how they chose their name of "Block B", Zico answered in a way that made it seem like it was a stupid question that the whole world should already know the answer to, and ended his explanation by glaring at the translator and telling her in an accusational, angry tone that she, too, already knew the answer. Basically, he was telling her that she shouldn't have bothered him with a question that she herself could have answered just as well. And no, he didn't mean it as a joke- his tone and facial expression showed pure annoyance, and the translator was so surprised by his rebuke that her answer of "Okay", in a completely taken-aback tone, practically jumped out of her.

During, before and after this question, each and every member was distracted and showcasing facial expressions of boredom. Some might say that it is understandable, as the interview couldn't have been much fun, but consider this: This is their job. They are professional musicians and expected to act as such. They make their living doing what they love thanks to the people that support them, yet acted as though they were above all basic laws of respect. It went beyond playfulness- it was downright rude. Anyone living a professional career who shows that kind of attitude, including Presidents (and their family members- ever hear of the Obama girl's attitude controversy?) has and will receive criticism.

Now on to the question about the flooding in Thailand. Here is the exact translation of what they said, with every detail and tonal nuance. I tried to use english phrases and vocabulary that best express the overall feeling behind their statements.

Zico: Of course we know about it, we're just pretending we don't. Everyone, through the influence of the floods, you have probably experienced emotional hardships or family-related setbacks, and we hope that through our monetary donations you can heal. We don't have anything but money.

Other guy (I'm sorry, I don't know his name): Hey, how much did you say you were going to give this time? How much was it this time?

Zico: Huh? Around... 7 cheun. won? (So, to explain this part: Cheun, in Korean, means thousand. When "won" is added to the end, (so, Cheun won), it becomes "one dollar". So Zico went from saying 7 cheun (7000) (which, in Korean won, is short slang for around 70,000 USD), to "7 dollars". He slid the "won" in at the end of his statement, right when the other guy started talking In essence, he meant it as a joke.

Other guy, towards the interviewers: So, yeah, [we'll donate] around 7 cheun? 7 cheun?

(Other member): 7 cheun... won? (Seven... dollars?) *Scoffs*.

(Silence from the interviewers- I think they were kind of appalled. As if thinking, "Are you all serious right now?")

Other guy: Claps his hands and laughs, dismissing his statement as a joke.

*Everyone else goes, ahaha, in a relieved, slightly forced way*

And the interview continues on.

In conclusion, I'm pretty sure Block B didn't realize how their actions were coming across on screen. Their actions and general attitude, combined with their mistake of joking about a sensitive subject, all combined to create a reaction of outrage from their viewers. Were they being malicious? Hardly. Were they rude, and did they in fact shame South Korea? Well, yes. As Korean stars, they represent the country; it's an inevitable consequence of being famous. My personal opinion is that their criticism was well-deserved, and I hope that they will use this situation as a learning experience and become more mature, well-mannered musicians that will last for a lifetime.

I understand block b made a mistake but they were rookies who were still new to the broadcasting world. Humans make mistakes and learn from it and become more mature while growing. Nickhun being angry and the members being angry as brothers of nickhun is completely understandable but as a sunbae, it was unprofessional for them to post their anger to twitter where EVERYONE could see. As a sunbae, they could have personally contact them and talk with them about there mistakes but they blasted it out in public and basically talked bad about their hoobaes. Thats immature and a very wrong decision. That made me more angry then what block b did -_-

I still don't get why people were so upset at them? Anyways they were just being boys if every behind the scenes film I watched of them had them being serious I would be so bored. I don't think they did anything wrong...

2PM members and Tiger JK can fully understand Korean so why defend them by saying the translations are wrong? And why would they apologize if they didnt anything wrong?

But that's the thing, the translations were wrong! They ACTUALLY said that money was all they could give. 1 person asked how much tht was. Zico replied 7000 won. They laughed. BUT they DID NOT laugh because they didn't care about Thailand. They laughed because it was a joke about their company not paying them, that really was ALL they had at the time. And if they acted serious, then everyone would have been mad like "And why r u suddenly serious about everything" or "I HATE THEM! THEY'RE SO BORING NOW!" Don't act like I'm wrong, because that's what would have happened.

`uhmm... if the translations is really wrong..then why does 2pm reacted that way? I mean even without translations they would've completely understand what BLOCK B was saying.. for sure they were speaking korean during the interview.. people might think that BLOCK B is really rude because as you have said.. "Mr. Translator Got it wrong.." i dont think korean people would react this way if they didn't find anything offending with the interview..

I'm reposting this comment from someone else so you can see this :D it had been made clear that there had been a mistranslation in the interview..and when i read this article i was bewildered that the boys you be this way but i still gave them the benifit of the doubt and so did someone else :) "CORRECTION!!!----> they didnt said "WHAT ABOUT 7000 won" becoz when the media asked ZICO about the flood he actually said,, "YES WE KNEW IT,, WE WILL TRY TO HELP,, and WE HOPE We COULD HELP THEM THROUGH OUR MONEY" *with serious image* then the other guy asked ZICO,, "HOW MUCH MONEY DO U HAVE NOW?" Zico replied " Huh?" hmmm 7000 won.." then they all laughed!! and TAKE NOTE!! they laughed becoz ZICO was saying he will HELP but he only have 7000 won,.,. (AND THATS ACTUALLY A JOKE) so if u have HUMORS u will get what they mean!! and if u are REALLY SENSITIVE enough to realize what ZICO SAID! YES!! he only have 7000 won that time!! but THEY NEVER SAID they will ONLY DONATE 7000 WON!! duh!! be OPEN MINDED GUYS!! dont judge them as if u WERE GOOD ENOUGH!!! coz HONESTLY!! U LOOK POORER than THEM by judging them WITHOUT understanding the REAL SITUATION!! duh!! -_- and BESIDES!! they've DONE SO MUCH!! and OBVIOUSLY!! that was ENOUGH!! ASKING FOR FORGIVENESS is not EASY!! especially when U DONT REALLY MEAN TO BE RUDE or TO HURT OTHERS!! be a HUMAN guys!! dont BLAME them!! GET SOME GOOD TRANSLATOR!! insteAd!!"
