Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2012 – October Week 4

K Will 2

The top song changes for the sixth straight week on our chart as an unexpected song jumps to No.1. While it was not even in the top 10 last week, K.Will’s “Please Don’t” has surged 14 spots to the top of our chart.  This song also took  first on M!Countdown and second on Music Bank this week, so it is not a total surprise.  In doing so, K.Will picks up his first ever No. 1 song on our chart. It is a very impressive win as he had to go against extremely strong competition.  “Please Don’t” is a number that meshes hip-hop and bokgo rhythms. It is a song about a person thinking about meeting a girl, breaking up with her, and trying to get back together.

K.Will’s win continues a strong run by male soloists this year, breaking the group dominated trend in K-Pop in recent years. Besides K.Will, G-Dragon was No. 1 in two separate weeks with “Crayon” (No. 4 this week).  And oh yes, let’s not forget Psy’s “Gangnam Style” which spent six weeks on top of our chart and is still topping the Music Bank K-Chart.  These three artists will be the favorite for top male soloists at this year’s Soompi Gayo Awards.

Ga In’s “Bloom” moves up two spots to No. 2. We had predicted this song would take over as No. 1 but falls short to K.Will’s “Please Don’t,” “Bloom” has the edge on most TV network rankings but “Please Don’t” is stronger on airplays and independent charts.

Rounding out the top three is Orange Caramel’s former No. 1 song “Lipstick,” down one spot from No. 2 last week.

Besides K.Will’s “Please Don’t”, there are three other new songs in the top 10 this week. At No. 5, indie folk rock group 10cm has their highest ranked song to date with “Fine Thank You And You.”  This is one of the three title songs from 10cm’s second album.  The song starts off with a piano melody and has old pop sounds, as the duo tried to stray from their usual sounds. The group used vintage instruments and microphone in order to give off Beatles sounds of the 60’s.  10cm’s other two album title songs “Tonight” and “Han River Farewell” are also on our chart at No. 22 and 30 respectively.

Another artist with three songs in our chart and one placed in the top 10 is Epik High. As their members finished their military duties and made their long awaited comeback. Epik High just released their seventh album “99” with double title songs “Up” and “Don’t Hate Me.”  However, neither these two songs are in the top 10 this week.  At No. 6, it is the album’s preview single “Cold”.  This is a sad hip-hop ballad featuring Lee Hai, who is the runner up of the K-Pop Stars competition.  This song probably has a dual purpose of announcing Epik High’s long awaited comeback, and also showcasing Lee Hai, whom YG Entertainment is very high on.  Lee Hai will release her debut album in November.

The last new song in the top 10 is a brand new debut at No. 9, perhaps with the best potential to go No. 1 as soon as next week, is miss A’s latest hit “I Don’t Need A Man.” It is from their fifth project album, “Independent Woman, Pt. 3”.  This song is composed by JYP and is of the southern hip-hop genre.  It holds lyrics about young women living with much confidence.

Lee Seung Chul – 긴하루 (The Livelong Day)

Genre: Pop Ballad

Album: Lee Seung Chul Vol. 7 (2004) Track 3

Comments: Veteran singer Lee Seung Chul began his career in 1985, before many of this generation’s K-Pop fans were born. Known for his sincere voice, he was the original vocalist of rock band Boo Hwal.  Lee left the band to go solo in 1989, and began a long musical journey that is still going on now.  He was a prominent figure in the 1990s Korean music scene.  In 2002, Lee Seung Chul reunited briefly with Boo Hwal and the group produced a big hit “Never Ending Story”.  In 2004, Lee released his seventh solo album “The Livelong Day” and the title song of the same name became one of the top hit songs in 2004.  The album itself was also one of the top selling album that year.

In recent years, Lee Seung Chul participated in a lot of different musical projects and also sang for many drama OSTs.  He just came back and released his new song “Amateur” that became his latest top 10 hit.
