“Iris 2″ Criticized for Using Toy Guns

“Iris 2″ Criticized for Using Toy Guns

The first episode of KBS’s new drama “Iris 2” aired on February 13 and instantly became the most watched show on Wednesday-Thursday nights. However, the flaws on the show are garnering as much attention as the show itself from the viewers.

On the first two episodes, viewers noticed NNS agents were using visibly fake guns. The problematic scene starts where Jung Yoo Gun (played by Jang Hyuk) were deploying agents. On the surface, it seemed like the production crew did their homework and prepared MP5 submachine guns, which is the most popular gun for special forces internationally. However, this MP5 submachine guns soon turned out to be toy guns made for children made by a toy replica company.

This particular model of replica “Iris 2″ used has a long furrow right in the middle of the magazine to see how many bullets are left. However, the actual model of MP5 does not have this and the entire magazine is made with pressed iron plates. On “Iris 2,” all agents were using MP5s with bullets visible through the furrow in the magazines.

Moreover, this replica model is of 1980s model of MP5, MP5A3. Today, most special forces around the world use the most recent model, MP5A5. The pistols NNS agents use on the show are also toy guns. The camera even zooms into these toy guns at one point and reveals the spring and white BBs lined up inside it. In this close-up shot, anyone could easily tell the guns are fake.

Previously, Korean dramas and movies had similar problems as it was extremely difficult to get firearms (it is illegal to posses firearms in Korea outside of military and police purposes). However, the movie/drama industry started importing firearms made specially for filming purposes since the 1990s.

Taewon Entertainment, the production company of “Iris 2,” previously showed the perfect example of historical research on and preparation for firearms in film “71 into the Fire.” However, they failed to do the same with “Iris 2″ for whatever reason and ended up using clearly visibly fake guns to film the drama.

If you're a film maker, people will appreciate if you go all out with your movie. That's why actors/actresses often learn how to cook for cooking movie, to handle weapons in action movie, to sing in musical-themed movie. This thing also applies in drama. The more you go all out, the more appreciation you will receive. In this case, it is apparent that the drama-makers weren't trying that hard to go all out, they actually had it coming. Of course they didn't have to use real weapons, but why not use airsoft guns? It's 1:1 scale! Clearly they're being lazy.

I don't think many people would notice this anyway...

I don't know why people go out of their way to point out stuff like this. It's a show. Did they really expect them to have real guns on the set?

Fake guns? Next thing they'll tell us is it's a fake story and some of the settings are fake too. Thanks gun experts for clearing up that misconception for us. Otherwise I may have gone my entire life thinking Iris was a documentary of actual events filmed as they actually happened.

Toy guns.. well done for finding that out! Would you like them to use real firearms? They're actors.. they have to ACT that the toy gun is REAL..

I watch drama for good acting ,story and direction not for some guns .I didn't even notice that gun which is circled in the pic since i was busy seeing actors. There are so many extra actors in such series that doesn't mean everyone will have real gun.And what the big deal even if its fake.

Freddie W would make such a killing if he hired himself to Korean drama producers as a special effects consultant. JUSSAYIN.

Who cares? And why do people pay attention to those little things, anyway?

Actually a lot of tv shows use real guns except obviously they don't have real ammunition in them. Though there are a lot of other flaws in the show that are more annoying than using a fake gun lol.

Well, the viewers (ajummas xD) probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a fake toy gun and a "real" gun (replica)

all the prove of being fake is too technical. i don't even realize (and maybe most other people too) that it was fake until these people point that out..

actually there are airguns that looks exactly like the real one but not functioning like the real one.. airguns are usually made for filming.. but airguns are expensive but with 20m budget i think they can afford it.. they could have used that instead of toy guns..

ignatiuscorleone
ignatiuscorleone

point is, why is a 'big budget' ''$20m' using toy guns from a shop rather than actual replicas. and even if toy guns were the best they can do the editing to such a big budget drama is totally rridiculous

@dreamingofu213 it's not that they need real guns. All they need is to make their replicas look as real as possible. They were looking at basic forms, but the production company should look into various angles and color samples to make a prop look real.

sarangkae

real guns are heavy and hard for actors with no real training in holding these weapons to use, plus it's dangerous. About these fake guns, it's convincing to me, seriously, these people complain about the smallest scene

Critized for using FAKE GUNS? What the heck are they going to use if they can't use fake ones? Real ones perhaps? That's just asking for an accident to happen. Ugh, some people critize the unimportant things too much. = x = This is a drama, so I'm not surprised if they used fake ones.

dreamingofu213

The whole thing is fake (it's a drama.. Don't you know?) why should they buy real guns? =.=

Why can't they just enjoy watching it? I don't understand why people would notice those things. They better not watch it if they point out the wrongs in the series. Just sayin'.
