Female Trainee Opens Up About the Reality of Sexual Favors in Korean Entertainment Industry

On March 29 on JTBC, an exclusive interview with an ex-trainee from an entertainment agency was aired.

The interviewee stated, “When I belonged to an agency, even though I was a minor I was often asked to be present at a bar. In truth, there are agencies that function more like brokers that trade female trainee to different sponsors.”

During the episode, it was revealed that there are private brokers that work to connect the sponsors to the models and trainees. One broker stated, “A broker would have profiles of trainees of various entertainment companies as well as female students that are attending art schools.”

He continued, “To meet a female trainee, a sponsor would be charged on average approximately 220.00 USD per meeting. If they want to meet a very young female or someone from a prominent agency, they may be charged 700~900.00 USD. A sponsor must make a reservation at least a day ahead, and only those that are already on broker’s customer list can get a meeting.”

The problem of sexual favors in entertainment industry is nothing new in Korea. Beginning with the controversial suicide of actress Jang Ja Yeon in 2009, other female stars have admitted this problem recently.

So Soompiers, what do you think of this dark side of the entertainment industry?

This girls chose this path and this job like its the last job in the world and they chose to sell themselves to get it so they should blame themselves first.

The only solution for this are the girls have to first stop allowing themselves to be treated in such manner. This industry is driven by girls who are willing to be sold. The bokers will know no one to trade if the girls do not agree. Do not blame the culture, people create such culture.

Woman always be the victim. Woman is weak. they need to make a entertainment law how long they need to trained, how big the fee should paid, how grade the trainee should reached to be debuted so that all clear and no need 'outsider' party to take advantage of young innocent talents

I love how everyone keeps saying this happens everywhere. WE ARE NOT TALKING ABOUT EVERYWHERE!! WE ARE TALKING BOUT KOREA!! Korean actresses and singers are like prostitutes from the get go from a very young age. And no I don't think that singers and actresses under contract with Disney are being paid for sex or to meet old men. There is something really really horrible about SKorea's entertainment industry where under age girls are being forced to have sex with either other male trainees or with older men. It's too common place in that country and it needs to stop.

People are willing to give up things for their dreams and careers, so it's digusting others take advantage of that. It's so sadd I wish we could do something to stop this kind of stuff ):

In an industry like this, "favors" like these happen all the time. We don't usually don't hear about it until someone speaks up. I'd like to think that this doesn't happen, but in reality it happens all the time. Also, it's not just in Korea, it happens all over the world.

It's sad but the reality is it's not just the korean entertainment industry that is that way, it's a global problem that most likely does not just stop at the entertainment industry.

It almost sounds like they are pimping out the girls to these brokers. This is sad, especially since these girls are like 12 when they go in for training. I wonder if the same thing happens to the boys. You always hear abiut the girls but never the boys.

As long as Greed and Desire are the driving force of the industry, it will continue and only get worse. Those who have power in the industry have the greed and desire for young flesh and sexual debauchery and use their power to indulge and gorge themselves with it. The Greed and Desire of the young artists for fame and fortune makes them submit to such degrading behavior. It is a real pity that those in power are such moral degenerates. If they were a more noble group, then they would really work to find good talent and provide healthy guidance for their careers instead of feeding on their own degenerate urges. Wouldn't it be wonderful if a group of agents and film makers in the industry stood up to this degenerate system and offered a healthy, truly professional alternative? I would love to see that.

Reality is, I think this is normal for almost every entertainment industry in the world. Again, reiterate in the term "almost". It all boils down to the fact that these entertainers sell themselves in the figurative and literal form. Meaning, they sell their ability to sing or act well as well as their beauty. It's what makes them stand out from the crowd. But the difference is, they won't shine without the help of the "capable ones". The only way for them to shine is to get assistance from these "capable ones" and although yes it's wrong, it's happening and there are people allowing it to happen to them. If there are entertainers allowing it, it will happen. No matter how much people will create an issue out of it, it's still an issue that won't be resolved till these entertainers allow such things to happen to them.

it happens everywhere i think. well, for women this is the case, while for some aspiring male models or actors, they are being scouted by mostly gay managers or agents. but everything comes down to the person himself or herself, if they will allow it. sadly, this is not only happening in korea, but worldwide.

I wonder what would happen if these creepy people were exposed for the slimeballs that they are. Not just one person's complaint that they could sweep under a rug (or one person that they could threaten and maybe get away with)--but many.

Good luck to Young Korean Dreamers, who wish to have a career in the Entertainment Biz there. Better choose their industries carefully and wisely. :D
