[Soompi 15th] Our Picks for K-Pop MVP’s from the Past 15 Years

[Soompi 15th] Our Picks for K-Pop MVP’s from the Past 15 Years

No matter how you look at it, 15 years is a long time, which makes it all the more amazing that so many artists that were around at the very early days of Soompi are still alive and kicking today. We thought it would be fitting to go through each of the years Soompi’s been bringing you the best in K-Pop and choose the MVP that came out of each year. We’re defining MVP as the artist that had the most impact and relevance in the long run, with emphasis on the international fandom. The choices were pretty clear for most years, though the competition was particularly fierce in 2008, 2009, and 2010, leading to some disagreement amongst our staff (Hottests vs. Shawols, anyone?). This might explain the explosion of new idol groups that debuted in 2011 – 58, if you’re keeping count.

Let’s take a trip down memory lane and revisit our favorite oppas and noonas in their younger days.

Quoting soomp;25794014 said:: Thanks for all the comments, everyone! @pandamalaya said exactly what I was going to say - it's not for the artist that was most popular for that year, but for those who have had the most impact overall, with emphasis on the international fandom. Sounds like something that should have been mentioned in the article, right? :P So with this measuring stick, even though WG was huge, GG still wins in my opinion in terms of overall impact and fandom to this day. rn Well, if you really want to go by impact, Wonder Girls still win as they moved the Kpop scene from the testosterone boy band focus (DBSK, Super Junior) to girl power. They definitely began the whole "catchy dance" trend and the use of trot. Remember when Jewelry released "Baby One More Time"? Most people said that it was inspired by WG's retro concept. Even with international fandom, I think many people began listening to Kpop through WG as well. I think there's a significant divide between people who started with "Nobody" and "Gee", but if you really wanted to grade the groups based on "overall impact and fandom to this day", why divide it in years of their debut? If you're going to go by that measure, KARA should be up there, too. They were really invisible on their "Break It" debut, but now, their "emphasis on international fandom" is huge, especially with Japan today. Having said that, your measuring stick really needs to get thrown out because there's no reason to use their debut to compare what they are today. If you really want to measure MVPs, I think you should be more objective.

Comparing sales and fans from Irony era to ITNW era, SNSD still wins by a mile. It wasn't until Tell Me (which was roughly half a year after their debut) that WG got popular.rn

Agree with almost all of them except the A Pink one. Possibly my B1A4 fan girl protesting

YEEEAH CNBLUE 2010 (: /happyabouthtis The whole 2008 competition between SHINee and 2PM is a difficult choice, in my opinion. I'm super SHINee-biased, but I do agree that 2PM was very popular that year as well. I have to say both of them are incredibly close in terms of popularity, even if one or the other won more awards. So even if my shining boys were not 2008's MVP (/sniff), I am still satisfied with 2PM, because I like them as well.

Shinhwa, Big bang, 2NE1, 2pm(original), Dbsk are the best among these

sorry... correct me if i'm wrong.. but why didnt SHINee win that year over 2PM? SHINee literally won every award their rookie year. I like both groups, but c'mon... based on the year it should have been SHINee.

WG still need to be the best for 2007, even though I am a SONE fan, I do not agree with the rank between wondergirls and snsd...

I swear I added IU to 2008 as a Runner Up - must have forgotten to save it. She definitely rules over 2PM when it comes to hits on the chart, but I thought that in terms of international fandom, which is what counts for a site like Soompi, 2PM (or SHINee) has a more rabid fandom. Stay tuned for the K-Drama version :D

Correct me if I'm wrong, but truly understand that this article is meant to pick the Most Valuable Player that debuted for the said year; not the most popular artist on that year.I do love Wonder Girls, but I barely remember I was once a Wonderfuls; and I'm still a SONE. APink is well deserved for the MVP of 2011.They grabbed the Gold Disk and Seoul Music Award.Their show,Apink News is the longest variety show ran by a K-Pop star;even by a cable tv but is a proof of their popularity.Agreed with the rest, but IU is worth to mention for the year of 2008 though; even not as a MVP.

Apink deserve to be in 2011, they got a lot of rookie awards.

Hrmmm I don't agree with 2011 and A-Pink...I would have thought Dal Shabet if not Block B...

No offense but the truth is GG never get successful if WGs did not create the trend. WGs deserve the place more! And 2004 was so great :x

Out of these debut songs my TOP 5 is (without order): BoA TVXQ Super Junior SNSD Seventeen

i miss dbsk soo much! and super happy to see Suju, 2PM and big bang on the list. And yeah, I also believe that WG really did surpass SNSD back in their debut years.:) What I'm really happy to see on the list is BAP!<333

It we go by how popular they are NOW then I agree with many (not APink though, EunJi is famous yes, but APink has yet to make a name for themselves as a group but then again none of the groups from 2011 really blew up in all honesty). But if we go by who was the MVP for that year then there are quite a few I disagree with. Yes SNSD is the Nations girl group now, but in 2007 when they debuted the Wonder Girls were THE girl group to beat. I mean "Tell Me " was the song of Korea back in 2007, everyone boy/girl/adjumma LOVED that song and they kept that popularity till they left for the states. SNSD didn't make a mark in kpop till 2 years after their debut in 2009 when they released Gee so while they are definitely the bigger group now, they were far from the MVP in 2007. As for 2013, personally there are a lot of groups but I have to say Ladies Code is standing out the most to me.

i think wg got popular when they had their first debuted, snsd lost to wg on mama awards

So far this year, Ladies' Code has stood out. I can't remember any of the rookies that debuted since January, I think it's been a few so far.

"So what do you think? Do you agree or disagree with our choices?" ...of course not. well, everybody has their own opinion. Mmm.. eventhough i'm SONE, but i think WG deserve to include in this Kpop MVP. I like SNSD from their mv 'ITNW' , but i admit that WG get popular first before SNSD. of course i'm very happy that my SNSD include in this, but come on... you have to think the feeling of Wonderfuls too.. please be more objective. well thank you to make me (as SONE) feel proud cz SNSD has chose, but once again, make it more objective, okay.

Just because Eun Ji got so famous, I dont think APink should be on the list though. I agree with the rest though since we only look at how much of the impact their debut songs made ^^

I really think that D-unit should be on 2013. They have two amazing albums so far, I mean maybe they havent come out of their shell but their music is REALLY good. I think we should keep and eye on them

After re-reading it, I get why H.O.T isn't on there. 2013 - 15 = 1998 while H.O.T debuted in 1996. rnrnSoompi picked the best/most popular debut song from each year only. 2007 was definitely WG's year but if we are speaking of debut songs only, then ITNW had a bigger impact than Irony did.rn

I think Ladies Code has stood out for 2013. They are really good. But I don't think Seventeen will be the next big thing.

WOWW my era was 2003...DBSK!!!! and onwards....I can't believe it's been like a decade since Kpop became a part of my life! woooowwwzaaa! yeahh the WonderGirls...."Nobody" was such a HUGE hit worldwide

atimemachine
atimemachine

Come on. It's not the "Top Song" of that year, but basically the debut song of the most relevant group to debut in that year. SNSD is bigger than WG RIGHT NOW so that's why they got it for 2007...but no one can argue that WG wasn't bigger during the Tell Me/Nobody days. Same with APink - right now, they are riding on Eunji's fame and are quite well known (compared to other 2011 debuts not compared to older groups) while I would say B1A4 is only popular with younger female students.

Albie_rawr

2007 belonged To Wonder Girls! Even with their hiatious there still relevant! and 2007 was ruled by Wonder Girls! no one can mimic "Tell Me" success

irees

It's pretty upsetting that Wonder Girls wasn't included. C'mon. They made the 2nd generation girl group trend. Up until they left for the US, they dominated the idol scene. You wouldn't find anyone who wasn't familiar with "Tell Me" and "Nobody". No offense to SONEs and SNSD. They've come far, but they didn't really "rule" until "Gee", and that was right after WG left. And I know this is a sore subject, but have we forgotten Dream Concert 2008's Black Ocean?

SHINHWA was my favorite group back then and I still like them now. <33 Personally, I think Wonder Girls was better than SNSD when both groups debuted in 2007. edit - now I see why H.O.T, Sechskies, and SES aren't part of the list. H.O.T debuted in1996 while Sechskies and SES debuted in 1997. XD

Oh don't fool yourselves please. We all know 2007 belongs to Wonder Girls. They won almost EVERY award for 'Rookie of the Year'!!!!!

a few grumbles. SHINee below 2pm.Nope A Pink above B1A4 and CNBlue above Infinite. I don't think so. and for this year Ladies Code have definitely stood out in terms of the best debut in Kpop for the a while.

TVXQ<333 I am surprised H.O.T is not on here and A Pink is on here. I think WG has achieved more than what A Pink has. Though for a new group back in 2011, they did really well.
