“The Blade and Petal” Premieres with Low Ratings

“The Blade and Petal” Premieres with Low Ratings

The historic KBS drama “The Blade and Petal” premiered yesterday, July 3 KST, to disappointing ratings.

The ratings race has been tight and tough for K-dramas recently, as the Monday-Tuesdays dramas have shown with a difference of about only one percent between each other. The competition for the Wednesday-Thursday primetime drama lineup is relatively less stiff with larger differences in ratings.

“The Blade and Petal,” starring Uhm Tae Woong and Kim Ok Bin as star-crossed lovers, recorded 6.7% ratings (Nielsen Korea). Its MBC competition, “The Queen’s Classroom,” recorded 9.0%, and SBS’ “I Can Hear Your Voice” continued to dominate with 17.9%, far out of the reach of its competition.

Soompiers, did you get to check out the first episode of “The Blade and Petal”? What do you think ? Will you give it a flower or wield a sword?

To actually calibrate it as Romeo & Juliet would be a disgrace in it's scenario.

I was expecting an awesome dialogued to go with great scene's in the first episode.

But...as I watched it week after week, the plot eluded me in different direction and had no baring plot. I'm thinking maybe, it got lost in the language translations??!!

It would've been better to create it's own story, then to simulate it as Romeo & Juliet.

I'm a little disappointed in some portion of the drama, they could've done more on the dialogue & some of scene's.

the PACING of the STORY is VERY SLOW...no exciting or "catchy" hints of what the story is all about. The scenes did not excite me at all! IT DID NOT LEAD ME TO SAYING "i'm gonna watch the next episodes".
SOME SPECIAL EFFECTS WERE NOT NECESSARY! they don't contribute to good drama, and just deviates the scenes into COMEDY. I think they should focus on the actors' EMOTIONS on how they are going to be "in character" conveying certain feelings. After all, the genre is HEAVY DRAMA!!

maybe it's too early to judge. the shots are beautiful but I think they overdid it for no reason. so it feels like you're looking at beautiful pictures, but no right emotions. I think UTW is generally good actor, but somehow in this 1st ep I don't find his expression believable. i found him awkward. The slo-mo, omg, one scene when the OTP stare at each other, the girl's look in awe of him (while I don't see him hot at all from every angle). I got bored after that.

I watched this first episode and must say that it deserved the basement rating it received. I've never seen such a premiere where there was practically NO dialogue - lots and lots of reaction shots of actors staring, especially Choi Min So - over and over. Awkward and almost unwatchable. Things had better perk up for episode 2.
