Music virtuoso Stevie Wonder will perform at this year’s Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) to be held at Hong Kong’s AsiaWorld-Expo (AWE) Arena on November 22.
According to Mnet, “Stevie Wonder can identify with MAMA’s dream to unite Asia through music and willingly agreed to appear at the event.”
Stevie Wonder is an American musician, a singer-songwriter and record producer, who has had more than 30 hit songs in the Billboard Top 10, including songs like “I Just Called to Say I Love You,” “Isn’t She Lovely” and “Superstition,” and has sold more than 100 million albums worldwide.
He has earned more than 20 Grammy Awards, and was inducted into “The Songwriters Hall of Fame” in 1983 and “The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame” in 1989. He also received the prestigious “Gershwin Prize” in 2009, an American Library of Congress award for his lifetime contribution to pop music.
Stevie Wonder has had two concerts in Korea, in 1995 and 2010.
He will appear at MAMA together with Swedish electro-pop duo Icona Pop and Norwegian comedic duo Ylvis. YouTube sensations Ylvis are set to share the stage with idol group Crayon Pop. Girl group 2NE1 have also been confirmed for MAMA 2013, with fans speculating a possible comeback stage at the event.
The event organizer’s (CJ E&M) side stated, “This MAMA with Stevie Wonder will go beyond being a pure music award ceremony, it will be a festival that will unite Asia through culture and sincerity. We hope to deliver a message of hope and dreams with the music stages and move the hearts of not just Asia, but the whole world.”
Collaborative stages between Korean artists and artists from overseas have always been a huge part of MAMA’s history, so perhaps we can expect a Stevie Wonder collaborative stage to happen.
MAMA 2013 takes place on November 22 at the Hong Kong AsiaWorld-Expo Arena and will be aired in over 93 countries all over the world. Voting for award nominees will continue all the way up to November 21, the day before the event.
