Anonymous Celebrities Make Contributions to Ferry Disaster Charity

Top Korean stars continue to make financial donations to charities connected to the families of victims and survivors of the Sewol ferry disaster. Some, however, are asking that their donations remain anonymous.

According to DongA.com, the Community Chest of Korea, one of the charities involved in the aid effort, has confirmed that one anonymous celebrity has donated 100 million won (around US$96,000). It also said “three or four others” had given 20 million won (approximately US$19,000) each.

A spokesperson for the charity was quoted as saying, “In the past, few celebrities have donated large amounts of money for humanitarian disasters of this kind. However, this time, we have received relatively little in the way of donations from major companies, and a lot of money from celebrities. We really appreciate the assistance from individuals who want to help us assist the victims of the disaster.”

The charity has already received donations from the likes of actors Park Shin Hye, who donated 50 million won (about US$48,000) and Jung Il Woo, who donated 30 million won (approximately US$29,000), a figure matched by 2PM member Junho. Also donating 10 million won (roughly US$9,600) were dancer Poppin‘ Hyun Joon (Nam Hyun Joon) and his wife, folk singer Park Aeri. Other stars have continued to offer their support in the form of financial donations to a variety of charities involved in helping the victims and survivors of the disaster.
