The Next Big Thing: 5 Rising Actresses You Ought to Know

Welcome back to “The Next Big Thing” series, where we feature some of the rising stars in the world of Korean entertainment! Not to be outdone by the gentlemen, we turn our attention now to the ladies who are making waves in their own right. Each uniquely captivating and endlessly talented, these actresses have the makings to be the next big thing in K-dramas.

Check out these five rising actresses you ought to know!

1. Kim Ji Won

Although most recognized for her role as the cold-hearted heiress Rachel from last year’s “The Heirs,” Kim Ji Won has been gradually building her resume with an interesting selection of projects such as “To The Beautiful You,” “High Kick 2,” “What’s Up,” and “Looking Forward to Romance.” She gave us her most complex and layered performance to date in this year’s “Gap Dong” as the naïve and hopeful Ma Ji Wool. With her combination of popular appeal, delivery of performance, and selection of unique characters, Kim Ji Won is definitely a force to be reckoned with.

2. Lee Yeol Eum

Lee Yeol Eum only has a handful of acting credits to her name, but proving that quantity does not always mean quality, she made people sit up and notice her this year in the role of streetwise younger sister, Jung Yoo Ah, in “King of High School.” Even though the role itself had its limitations, I was pleasantly surprised by the level of sensitivity she demonstrated for such a new actress. Lee Yeol Eum is definitely one to watch as she continues to develop her skills and grow with each new role.

3. Kyung Soo Jin

Kyung Soo Jin has spent the last few years paying her dues and honing her craft, landing supporting roles in such dramas as “Shark,” “The Secret Love Affair,” and “The Winter The Wind Blows.” But fresh off the success of “Plus Nine Boys,” she is poised to jump into leading lady territory. Kyung Soo Jin is an example of an actress who makes her role more than what it is, has a knack for breathing new life into archetypal characters, and is a unique mix of approachable girl-next-door and woman with just enough intrigue to keep a person interested. She’s definitely one to look out for!

4. Lee Sung Kyung

Model-turned actress Lee Sung Kyung couldn’t have picked a better debut project than “It’s Okay, That’s Love,” to make a splash into the world of acting. Without a doubt a beautiful face, she proved that she wasn’t just all looks in her role as the haughty and compulsive Oh So Nyeo. Her storyline with Park Soo Kwang (played by Lee Kwang Soo) was, for me, one of the highlights of the entire show. It seems we’ve only just seen the tip of the iceberg with what Lee Sung Kyung is capable of, and I’m looking forward to see what she has in store for us.

5. Lim Ju Eun

Lim Ju Eun has been constant staple in some of the most popular K-dramas of the recent past, with “Empress Ki, “The Heirs,” and “Arang and the Magistrate” under her belt. Although she has demonstrated flexibility in her acting, most notably as Kim Dong Ah in “Wild Romance,” and Oh Doo Ri in “What’s Up,” she teeters on the cusp of landing that lead role. But fear not, because Ju Eun is one of those actresses whose performances linger with you. She might appear unassuming in the way she acts out her characters, but she always leaves you wanting more. Hopefully we’ll be seeing her in main role soon!
