Tao (Huang Zitao) Releases Solo MV, Album Lyrics Raising Eyebrows

After the release of the music video (below) for his solo mini album “T.A.O,” Tao has quickly gotten swept up in controversy regarding the lyrics of his songs.

Tao took time to commemorate the release on his Weibo with a message that incorporates the titles of the three songs on the album, “‘T.A.O’ talks again of our ‘Yesterday,’ and now I share ‘One Heart‘ with you all.”

He continues, “I recorded what I wanted to say in the lyrics. I hope you will like it. I thank everyone around me who has helped me. I hope that at this moment that all of us can be joyful and happy. As you have given me hope, I will give you all a more beautiful tomorrow. I love you.”

However, netizens on one online community site took the time to analyze the lyrics of the songs in “T.A.O” and noted parts that seem to take a jab at his time in Korea as a musician under SM Entertainment.

Lyrics like the following from “One Heart” have been catching attention, “I wasted my time, and I cannot redo the past. I don’t want to think about it anymore. One love? Where is it? I tried to find it, but I couldn’t find anything. Is it my sincere heart for a sincere heart? Was it sincere? Where is it? Where is it? Let’s forget what has passed.”

Also this excerpt from the lyrics for “T.A.O,” “I believe in my perseverance. I believe in my choice. When I left, I learned what freedom is. When I left on my own, I learned why I am returning now.” Some netizens have taken issue with what they see as a sense of ingratitude for the fame and fandom he has gained due to his activities in Korea as part of EXO.

Meanwhile, earlier this year in April, Tao was swept up in rumors that he was planning on leaving EXO when his father uploaded a Weibo post requesting his release from management company SM Entertainment.

Following the controversy, EXO released “Love Me Right,” which the group promoted as a nine-member group without Tao, although SM Entertainment had yet to release an official statement regarding Tao’s status as a member.

Since then, Tao has set up his own agency, making it known that he plans on launching into solo activities in China.

What are your thoughts on the lyrics? Do you think netizens are overreacting or do you think they have a point?
