Star Empire Drops Complaint Against University Students Over Use of Photo of 9MUSES’s Kyungri

9MUSES‘s agency Star Empire Entertainment filed a legal complaint in October against university students who had created a poster for their fall festival on which they wrote lewd captions on a photo of 9MUSES member Kyungri.

On November 27, the students issued a formal apology for their actions on their university’s website. Star Empire has now responded by announcing that they will be dropping their complaint against the students.

The agency’s official statement is as follows:

“Hello, this is Star Empire Entertainment.

In regard to the lewd promotional poster for a certain university’s festival that used the image of 9MUSES member Kyungri in September of 2015, we filed a complaint with the Seoul Western District Prosecutor’s Office in October against the related parties for violating the ‘Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection.’

The university in question and the parties responsible for the distribution of the image have acknowledged their wrongdoing in creating the lewd promotional poster using Kyungri’s image and distributing it. They have presented a concrete plan to prevent recurrence of the act, and posted a public apology to their homepage. Considering such steps that they have taken to solve the issue, after internal discussion we have decided to withdraw our complaint. As soon as possible, we will be submitting a formal request to withdraw the complaint.

This withdrawal of our complaint is an exceptional case. We state our position that in the future we will be strictly and forcefully responding to any online or offline acts of malicious libel, violation of portrait rights, or posts or comments that spread false information about the company or its affiliated artists.

In addition, we hope that this incident will be a foundation upon which a more respectable university festival culture can be formed.

We once again thank all those who support and show an interest in Star Empire Entertainment and its artists.”

9MUSES recently staged a comeback with their fifth mini album “LOST” and their music video for “Sleepless Night.”
