“Descendants of the Sun” OST Track Under Suspicion of Plagiarism

Chen, Punch - everytime

Even a drama as popular as KBS’s “Descendants of the Sun” isn’t without its criticisms, but now one of the tracks from the drama’s OST is under suspicion of plagiarism.

Recently in an online community, netizens note how remarkable similar the track “Everytime,” sung by Punch and EXO’s Chen, sounds to Eric Nam’s debut single, “Heaven’s Door.” The drama track dropped in late February, while “Heaven’s Door” was released in January 2013.

The original songwriter of “Heaven’s Door,” Han Jae Ho, opens up about the two songs in an April 6 interview with OSEN. “I’d heard so much hubbub about it that I listened to the song, and it was strikingly similar. In particular, the tone of the song and the refrain were the most similar. The flow was similar, as well.”

On the plagiarism accusation, Han Jae Ho says, “They changed it just enough to avoid calling it plagiarism. Rather than taking legal action, I’d like to mediate through conversation.”

Alternatively, the songwriting company behind “Everytime,” Music&NEW, releases an official statement on the plagiarism accusations. “While monitoring the segment of the chorus in question, we sought consultation from the original songwriter of Davichi and BIC‘s “A Night Like This,” Jo Young Soo. After receiving permission to sample the song, Jo Young Soo, earattack, and Rocoberry collaborated to write the song.”

Listen to the two tracks for yourself below. Do you think that this is a case of plagiarism?
