Hyorin, Ga In, Ailee and Other Female Solo Artists Rule January Charts Over Girl Groups

The Korean music world in January was run by the girls, the solo artists in particular. While the sexy girl group comebacks made for a hot topic, the music charts were ruled by powerful female vocalists like SISTAR’s Hyorin, Ailee, and Brown Eyed Girls‘ Ga InAccording to Melon’s real-time music chart on January 29, new songs from female artists were in 7 of the top 10 spots. Excluding Girl’s Day’s “Something,” 6 of the 7 spots belonged to female solo artists.

Hyorin was at the top of the chart with her song “Goodbye,” which was released on January 22. “Goodbye” is the OST for the popular SBS drama “Man From the Stars,” an up-tempo pop ballad with a catchy chorus. Other artists in the top 10 include Idina Menzel, Ga In, Ailee, Lyn, and IU.

American actress/singer Idina Menzel was in second place with “Let It Go,” from the Disney box office hit “Frozen.” “Let It Go” also topped the Billboard chart in the U.S., the first time in 19 years for a Disney soundtrack, and the song has been nominated for best soundtrack for the Academy Awards next year.

In third place was Ga In, with her new song “Fxxk You,” an R&B-type song with a classic guitar sound, featuring hip-hop artist Bumkey. The song is from her third mini album, “Truth or Dare,” to be released on February 6.

Other solo female artists in the top 10 were Ailee in fifth place with “Singing Got Better,” Lyn in eighth with “My Destiny,” and IU in ninth with “Friday.” 

Also ranking were Gummy’s “You’ll Think of Me” in fifteenth, Younha’s “Man From the Stars” in eighteenth, and Jia’s “Have You Ever Cried” in fifty-first, among others.
