Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2014 – November Week 4

No. 1 and 2 switched places again this week as Epik High’s “Happen Ending” returned to the top spot and bumped BEAST’s “12:30” back to No. 2. These two songs are neck-and-neck in all the music charts and once again, the top spot is determined by our Soompi Airplay as Epik High is the hotter trending artist last week. Congratulations to Epik High.

Yoon Hyun Sang’s duet with IU “When Would It Be” remains a distant third this week so the top three are the same songs as last week.

There are two new songs in the top 10 this week. Just below the top three is MC Mong’s first top 10 hit in more than five years. The controversial rapper recently returns to the music scene releasing his sixth album, appropriately titled “Miss Me Or Diss Me.” The title song of the same name (one of the three title songs in his album) featuring the voice of Mad Soul Child’s Jin Shil moves up 15 spots to No. 4 this week. This song won on SBS Inkigayo and MBC Music Core without any promotions but MC Mong is still banned by KBS so his songs are not ranked on Music Bank.

Back in the last decade, MC Mong’s pop oriented hip-hop songs were a fixture on the music chart. However, he angered a lot of people by controversially evaded military duties and received a lot of negative criticism. TV Networks also banned him. As a result, he has completely disappeared from K-pop in the last five years. He quietly returned to the music scene this month. Despite no promotions, his songs are ranked high on music charts, indicating a lot of fans did miss his music but there are also a lot of people still haven’t forgiven him.

“Miss Me Or Diss Me” has powerful string sounds and upbeat rhythm that contrast with piano melody featuring Jin Shil’s heart-wrenching vocals. The lyrics are about MC Mong’s wish to get rid of his fear of returning to the public eye through music.

Moving up 18 spots to No. 6 is trot singer Hong Jin Young’s first ever top 10 hit “Cheer Up.” Hong Jin Young has gained a lot of popularity appearing on the reality TV Show “We Got Married.” “Cheer Up” is the title song of Hong Jin Young’s first mini-album. Written by veteran hitmaker Cho Young Soo, “Cheer Up” has a pop-oriented trot melody singing about the normal life stories people, and how they overcome their own hardships. “Cheer Up” is the first trot song to hit our top 10 in eight years. The last time it happened was Jang Yoon Jung’s “Later Later” back in 2006.
