Here it is again: the problem that refuses to go away. New KBS 2TV drama “I Remember You” starring Seo In Guk and Jang Nara has become the latest entry in the ever lengthening list of dramas and songs that have received plagiarism accusations.

Aspiring writer Jung Da Hee, “because the subject matter is so similar,” left a message on an “I Remember You” viewer message board, claiming that the story is extremely similar to a piece she submitted for an open contest.

“In the story, the characters are a mother who is a profiler, and two brothers, 11 and 7 years old. The older brother is a born psychopath, while the other has acquired psychopathy. The mother, who is aware of this, keeps the brothers in the basement of their home and home schools them. The story starts 10 years later, when the brothers are let out into the world.”

She says, “My work was completed on March 10 of 2014, and I registered it for copyright on August 21 of the same year. I wonder when [the writer for ‘I Remember You’] registered.”

Kwon Ki Young, the writer of “I Remember You,” responded to the writer, as did the drama production team. “For copyright disputes just like this one, the 2014 CJ E&M open contest only accepts hard copy submissions, rather than email. That is how they are judged, and all eliminated works are then immediately shredded. The system is such that the works are neither circulated nor are they seen by anyone other than the person in charge. Following, the ‘I Remember You’ producers have never seen or come across Miss Jung’s work.”

They go on to say that Jung Da Hee’s claim based on the foundation of a similar story is not true, and that they have file and email records of the writing process for ‘I Remember You’ that date back to long before the 2014 CJ E&M contest.
