Title: 요리왕 (COOKING? COOKING!) 01. 요리왕 (Cooking? Cooking!) (MV) 01. Yoriwang (COOKING? COOKING!) | 02. Pajama Party
Our featured artiste this week is Super Junior’s newest sub-unit, Super Junior Happy (supi, or supy, for short). After having presented the fans with three completely different sub-units — specializing in ballads (K.R.Y.), traditional music (T for trot), and one to break into the Chinese market (M for Mandarin) — SM Entertainment finally revealed what six of the group’s original members had been working on the past few months. In fact, supi unofficially debuted on May 3 at the Yedang Online 'POWER CONCERT' and, although they didn't introduce themselves as Super Junior Happy, the sub-unit was already a confirmed secret project back then.
Ever since the main group’s first official performance on Nov 6, 2005, Super Junior’s popularity has been steadily increasing and they are now considered one of the most successful artistes both in South Korea and among Korean pop music fans from all over the world in the span of two and a half years.
Super Junior Happy’s promotional activities began with the release of their first mini album on June 5 and, two days later, members Leeteuk, Yesung, Kangin, Shindong, Sungmin and Eunhyuk successfully performed the title track “요리왕 (COOKING?COOKING!)” for the first time at the 14th edition of Seoul’s largest annual live concert — I Love Korea! 2008 Dream Concert — held at the Seoul Olympic Stadium, in front of some 50,000 fans.
Throughout the month of June, “요리왕 (COOKING?COOKING!)” has been performed live at official events and music shows on a regular basis; promotional activities for the other mini album tracks were also carried out on various radio broadcasts, fan-signing events and variety shows, such as KBS Star Goldenbell.
Supi’s purpose is to brighten up their loyal fans' day with refreshing dance music, amusing choreographies and their peculiar cheerful charm. The title track “요리왕 (COOKING?COOKING!)” is a song that narrates a funny episode about a loving girlfriend who lacks cooking skills and decides to take lessons in order to prepare delicious food for her lover. Each and every one of their songs has cheerful lyrics and bright tunes that bring a smile to your face; ironically, though, supi’s mini album earned a parental advisory warning on some online shopping websites for the mildly questionable lyrics of “파자마파티 (Pajama Party)”. The latter is a lively track recorded by a live session of a string orchestra and brass band, with guitars, bass and percussions, eventually remixed to give it a dance feel. Other tracks are: “둘이 (YOU&I)” —a bittersweet love song with a swing rhythm and guitar melodies, “꿀단지 (SUNNY)” — an energic track with fair reminiscences of the retro style back in the 70’s, and lastly, “잘해봐 (GOOD LUCK!!)”, a medium-tempo ballad originally recorded a cappella. Additionally, it’s curious to note that Super Junior members Kim Ryeowook and Cho Kyuhyun took part in the back-up vocals recording of a few supi tracks.
“요리왕 (COOKING?COOKING!)” has already topped television broadcasting charts, quickly becoming the most popular summer song of 2008, while their mini album also ranked 2nd on the weekly sales charts provided by Hot Tracks. Enjoy this hot weather with Super Junior Happy’s refreshing music, and just as their leader (Leeteuk) says: “this will be this summer’s new moda”. Comments |
