Its a Party on Soompi ~ Find Your Peeps

Wanna see which of your friends are on Soompi?

You can now search your email contact lists to see if any of your friends are here on Soompi and then add them as friends ~~ pretty cool, huh?

Follow the instructions here and go find your peeps!

UPDATE (10/20) - Valid points have been made on both sides of the argument, but in deference to those who want to keep their Soompi existence anonymous, an option to block people from being able to find you via the Friend Finder has been added to Settings -> Preferences, as well as being able to block specific people from following you (My Followers -> Block). We are doing our best to make Soompi fun & awesome for everyone, so please bear with us during our growing pains.

UPDATE: To be clear, Soompi is not DISCLOSING anyone's emails - your email must already in your friend's address book for this feature to work. If they do not have your email address already, you will not appear in the results.

In general, everyone should practice smart online safety behaviors here and everywhere else on the web.  You can read more about top twelve ways to protect your online privacy here.  Here at Soompi, we are much more aggressive about moderating our community from spammers, stalkers, and other annoying people than 99% of websites out there. Please remember that all the volunteer staff on Soompi works hard to keep the site a happy place.  If you are concerned about privacy, please note that the #3 tip on that list (which everyone should know about since its just common sense) is "Keep a clean email address", aka a side email address.

Lastly, this feature is not a new internet invention that we created.  Every single site with a community has it - we are just bringing Soompi up to speed with the rest of the world :)  Thank you for your support ^^

And to clarify - its the ads here on the main site that actually pay the bills. They make more $ than forum ads. THAT is why we need the main site for Soompi to stay alive, regardless of what you feel about the main site.

I would like to add my two cents in here. Honestly guys, Soomp and the whole Soompi team have been busting their butts all year trying to make Soompi sustainable as a website. Our server bills alone are north of $5000 a month - which we do NOT cover from ads on the forums. Our #1 goal is to make sure that those bills are covered each month so that there is no down time and everyone gets a decent connection to the site. This "find your friends" is basic feature that is now the norm on the web - and if we want to make sure Soompi doesn't become ancient and die, we need to make sure we keep up with the times. If we don't keep up with the times, our ad revenue drops - that is economic reality, folks. If we take down every single thing that you guys want because you want Soompi to stay exactly the same, then we would need to at least half our server resources, which means back to 2-3 hours of down time a day and regular server outages. Do you want that? If so, we can do that. We can go back to the "good old days" which includes daily downtime and slow server connections. The simple fix around this is to use a different email address when you register for accounts online besides your school account, etc. People have kept a separate email for registrations since the days when Hotmail was launched - that's what FREE email is about, guys. We are not asking you to donate a kidney here - the time it takes you to post a comment here is the time it takes to do that. What is more frustrating to me though is the vibe that I am getting that you all have lost faith in us that we are doing what is best for the sustainability of the whole site - do you really think we did not weigh out the pros and cons of every single thing we do? If the choice is between some members changing their registered email account to a different acct for site signups (which everyone using the internet should have in this day and age) and not implementing features that allow Soompi to become sustainable - what do you prefer? Soomp and myself have already been working on this site for nearly one year WITHOUT pay (for those of you that think we are secretly making $, then you have not seen our bank accounts, nor have you heard our mothers lecturing us about how we need to get real jobs) and without much sleep for that matter. I would like to see Soompi exist as a website for many years to come. If we hadn't instituted some of the changes that we did this year, then Soompi would be in a dire situation. If you really give a damn about Soompi - use our affiliate links in the forums to buy stuff from YesAsia and Amazon, become friend of Soompi, etc. I apologize if this rant comes off a bit harsh, but guys, I'm tired and the idea of going back to the old server situation after all this hard work is really disheartening to me.

please no! there wasn't even a poll for us to decide whether we want this feature or not :[ i find that unfair. i'd rather stay annonymous for numerous reasons.
