MAMA was a pure joke

I was at a friend's birthday party last night so I couldn't help the team with MAMA but I read up on related articles this morning when I was woken up by a motherjohn teshing Christmas parade going on 20 feet from my bedroom window. I see why so many groups decided to boycott it or say "sorry I really can't make it since my house is on fire, but we'll catch up some other time, ok?" Here are some allegations that I share with seemingly large number of Korean netizens who are swarming forums with rage.

WG, when they made the entire nation sing tell me tell me tetetetetetell me, they 'only' managed to win the rookie of the year award. If you don't know how big Tell Me was, just know that it was big enough for grandmas and grandpas in Korea to sing and dance to it. Still not convinced? Entire executive team of my program's student body did the dance for our annual event, and it included me and also some white people. 2ne1 on the other hand managed to win rookie award AND a main award (3 main awards being artist of the year, best song and best album). "I don't care" can snag 2ne1 the rookie award and best song but "Tell me" can only manage to win the rookie award? Seems a bit fishy. Also, a rookie winning a main award is something that hasn't happened in Korean award ceremonies. HOT couldn't do it. DBSK couldn't do it. Only person who managed to pull it off was Seo Tae Ji. Mnet must think really highly of 2ne1 to put them on the same level as STJ.

Best album is no doubt being made fun of the most right now. People are wondering why GD didn't say "I want to thank Flo Rida and Oasis for writing such fantastic songs for me" during his acceptance speech. Yes, the album sold 200k copies which is very high considering the music market right now. But, its also the most controversial album of 2009, having been criticized by numerous artists and experts in the industry (not to mention normal people), stirring up debates in the parliament and ultimately being rated R for some odd reason. Making a decision to give Best Album award to an album that is being considered a national shame by so many people is pretty much the same as labeling the ceremony with "Warning: we do not give a rat's ass about fairness."

Trot award. Just read this article: http://www.allkpop.com/index.php/full_story/trot_singers_boycott_mama/

Let's revisit why SM boycotted this. The main reasons was becase SNSD's "Gee" didn't even get close to winning number 1 spot on Mnet's M!countdown. Its the same song that won music ranking programs of all other networks for 9 weeks in a row. Gee was downloaded as cellphone ringtone 700k times, MV was watched 10million times on GomTV, and the song was played 6.5million times on BugsMusic. It is the song that was sold the most this year, and Mnet decided to ignore it. I'm not an expert at this, but this seems pretty biased. Judging from this, even if SM showed up at MAMA 'I don't care' would prolly have won the best song and there would have been some serious pinkberrying going on.

Ah, lets not forget about the three rebels of DBSK showing up and receiving an award on behalf of the entire group. Mnet hates SM (read above point) and the three members hate SM as well, so naturally they would mix. But this was a low blow, really. Both Mnet and the three members should have thought more carefully about their actions. By showing up, the three members pretty much gave a big fat middle finger to SM. Does this help improve the situation? I think otherwise. If Mnet gave mini cooper about DBSK, they wouldn't have asked them to come on the ceremony. By showing up, the three members insulted SM and pretty much took another (gigantic) step towards destruction of DBSK. Mnet knew about this of course, and that was what they wanted; controversy. Who cares if the best idol group Korea has to offer is about to fail, as long as more people watch the show and more news articles talk about it the morning after, right? Also, the three members shouldn't have come because of the same reason. They worsened the situation through their attempt to win sympathy votes. You cried for the two members who sided with SM - while saying john tesh you to SM at the same time. Good job, retards. Also, they didn't have the right to receive the award in name of DBSK. They were granted freedom to pursue individual projects, not the right to use DBSK name. MAMA says "we wanted to give it to the entire group but the two didn't show up." No mini cooper, Sherlock. I wonder why.

2PM winning the artist of the year. Hotties are scary, and my view on the whole Jaebeom thing is mixed to the point where even I don't know wtf I think about it so I'll try to keep it concise. They do deserve some credit for shifting the trend in male idols from a bunch of kool-aids to beastly dudes. However, I must use the same logic I used for WG only winning rookie of the year with Tell Me. Hell, I don't even know a 2PM song besides Heartbeat, and I know Heartbeat only because I write for AKP. 2PM was no doubt the single most controversial group of 2009, going from "2PM? I think I heard about them" to "2PM? The group with that son of a pinkberry, right?" for most Koreans. Their performances were powerful, yes, and their rise to notoriety was swift, no doubt, but their MUSICAL achievments this year have been somewhat lacking. To me, it seems like Mnet gave it to them for the controversy value. It is easy to forsee that 2PM would mention Jaebeom during acceptance speech and whats better than controversy for MAMA, right? Its the same award ceremony that was attention whoring by saying stuff like 'Jaebeom is gonna show up." Shouldn't have expected much.

The whole "Asia" thing. It was all Korean artists (except for AKB48 which is a joke group that does a lot of ridiculous mini cooper for attention). Why the john tesh would you say "We're going international now!" when you can't even get the top artists from Korea to show up?

To sum it up, MAMA is more appropriately labeled as an episode of drama featuring a lot of celebrities than an award ceremony. The whole thing makes MTV VMA look like Grammy.

P.S. ROFL at SuJu winning all the popularity contest awards.

this article is a pure joke. Get off your high horse. If MAMA strives to become something like Grammy I can assure you that none of these idol groups, especially SuJu and SNSD, can even be nominated. And you seem kinda ignorant.

i agree with discombobulate about 2PM....they were really popular with again and again..JAEBEOM was in that..so its only fair that the boys mention him.I thought they deserved it for their talent. aren't award shows biased anyways??? I get the whole DBSK thing though.

well if they anticipated/knew that SM would boycott anyway, who else would the awards go to? 2NE1 achieved a lot as rookies, and i thought that award was totally fair. I support your argument that WG should have gotten it when they debutted also, but that's totally over and done with - they've moved on. And 2PM was/is popular. I don't really understand that part of your argument. I do understand some of your points though. especially the DBSK one.
