Member BlogIsland in the Sun: A Photo Postby: the real ginger on: May 8, 2008 4:49am
Honestly, I can't write for crap tonight (strewing together even a simple statement is frustrating) so this post is going to revolve around photos.
Driving out of Seoul into the country! It was beautiful.
Welcome to Geomundo! It's a small island and definitely NOT commercial/touristy. My Korean co-teachers had never even heard of it. But it was calm, beautiful, and EXACTLY what me and my friends needed for a weekend.
The Baekdo islands lie close to Geomundo. They're small, rocky mountain islands and they are so gorgeous. The water was such a perfect aqua--I had no idea that Korea had those kinds of waters.
Two of my friends in the ocean! It was frigid but we went all the way in. The other girls thought we were insane. But really...to come all that way and not even swim in an ocean that clear? Yeah, right.
Two other shots of the seashore. There were no waves on that part of the island, just ripples.
A group of ajummas and ajusshis that we ended up drinking with. We shared some beers, songs, and dances--really amusing.
My friend and I. I was jumping, she was...trying.
The start of our Saturday hiking expedition.
We climbed this! Apparently, it's named, "Wizard Rock Mountain" or something equally as magical.
Two pictures of the windier side of the island. Dean looks super emo in this. Finally, it should be said that Korea's signs are usually quite good, but sometimes, things like this happen:
P.S.: I have a cyworld that I'm actually UPDATING now (it kind of sat around collecting dust for a few months): My Cyworld
This title is Island in the Sun by Weezer.

standing waves: It's a Nikon D40 with a f/1.8 lens. I'm not super technical, but I've learned to work my way with the DSLR. It can be frustrating at first, because there are so many different things to adjust, but now, I can work it really fast.
memeu: There are some pretty amusing restaurant/store names that are in English here, but I've never seen an official place with a mistake.
shinerka: FREAK!! NO WHITIES ALLOWED. J/k.
donguri: It's definitely cool, because it's so far removed from the Korean masses. It was a huge relief to get away from Seoul and the pushiness.
sefure: Most people prefer the "arty ginger." Alas!
cooler_als_pennerschuhe: Wow, very cool! I'm sure you'll have an amazing time. For my two weeks...I might go to Spain. Not sure!
Orange momo: I wish I had taken videos of Geomundo to show you guys, but I didn't bring my little point and shoot Canon. :( Anyway, we can still get a drink in January. ;)

Thank you! (about the name)
Thank you! (about the name) I'm going to be studying abroad in Munich, Germany for a whole year. Oh yes, not an academic year, but an ACTUAL year. :) I'm quite excited by this, as you can tell. I'll be leaving on August 29th and probably won't get back until August 20th, 2009. The university classes end sometime in July (I think) and from then on, I'll be traveling around Europe and taking advantage of the international student discounts. Will you be traveling around South Korea for your two weeks off?

Jumping Ginger
Hoorah, a photo post! You're probably going to strangle me but I hope you get writers block more often ^^" I love Arty Ginger more than I do Writey Ginger,, ok I made that last word up... but you get the picture (pardon the pun... even though it was intended lol).. Absolutely adore your shots.
@standing_waves; I'll let Ginger anwser your query as this is her blog.. but if I may add a comment and suggest that you purchase a camera that suits YOUR personal lifestyle. A digital SLR is not for everyone, and I know first hand that many people give up carrying an SLR because whatever commitment they originally had for photography eventually dwindled away after lugging around 2 pounds of luggage. This goes double when you're on holidays where looking after expensive equipment is usually the last thing on the minds of most people..

That is on my list of places I must visit if/when I go to Korea. Wow the scenery is breathtaking. And it sounds like you had a blast. "POSTO FFICE" had me laughing for a while, what a cute mistake. Great post! I really enjoy your photos. <3

Joyce: Yeah, we definitely needed a break from the city. Of course, this weekend...it's back to Hongdae. -_-;
Koncettina: I'd been swimming in the Med in Italy before, and it was stunning, but that water was a light crystal blue. This was a deep aqua/teal--really, really gorgeous, as well. I had fun counting down to three and having my friends whip their heads around to catch the crazy wind. We have a million outtakes because of awkward facial expressions, though.
Cooler als Pennerschuhe: (that's quite a name, by the way) I know what you mean! I get to travel for 2 weeks this summer and I'm so excited and overwhelmed. How long are you staying in Germany?
pdurrr: A lot of the hikers opted out of climbing the mountain. I almost did, since I have some mild vertigo, but I figured that I really ought to just suck it up and do it. It was totally worth it, although--once we were up on top in our victory poses--someone was like, "...and how the hell are we getting down?"
saera: Thanks! I took way, way too many pictures. It was hard to keep adjusting the settings because we would go into extreme shade and then go into extreme sunlight. I don't like using the auto settings on my camera, so I got to know my camera a LOT better after that day trip.
Barbiegrace: Korea definitely has some sights, they just don't advertise them. Some of the older Koreans I know were confused, like, "why would you want to go to that small little island with no shopping/good restaurants when you could go to Jeju?" They didn't get that the entire appeal was that it was so uncommercialized and removed from the touristy atmosphere.

Oh I haven't commented on
Oh I haven't commented on your last couple of posts/entries but I read them both! ^^ Yes, even the "intolerably" long one! I'm really liking this photo post, especially since you take such beautiful pictures. Whenever I take a picture...there's one word that comes to mind: disaster. Haha...I should probably practice before I go to Germany. In any case, that island and its waters look absolutely amazing and gorgeous (probably an understatement). I'm itching to travel even more now. I feel so restless thinking about this :)

It's refreshing to know other people like going into freezing water!!! The pictures were just wonderful! I've never seen such a beautiful color of blue! The picture of Dean and your friend was probably the best. Very beautiful! I'm glad you had fun and got to relax.
