Its a scandal...!!!!

... or maybe not.

It never ceases to annoy me when the word 'scandal' is abused in the K-pop entertainment, though it fascinates me as well how a word with such a strong meaning can transmute into one that just refers to the possibility that a celebrity may be in a relationship with someone else.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/scandal  gives the following meanings for the word...

1. a disgraceful or discreditable action, circumstance, etc.
2. an offense caused by a fault or misdeed.
3. damage to reputation; public disgrace.
4. defamatory talk; malicious gossip.
5. a person whose conduct brings disgrace or offense.

–verb (used with object)

6. British Dialect. to defame (someone) by spreading scandal.
7. Obsolete. to disgrace.

Events such as the Mayor of New York resigning over links to a prostitution ring, The Profumo Affair of the 1960's, the Scientist who falsified results of cloning experiments have all been classed as scandals and justifiably so for they were supposed to uphold specific principles and follow laws and ethical codes which they did not.

I don't think classing a relationship between two celebrities rates as a scandal by normal dictionary definition unless, of course they are already seeing someone else. To be in a relationship is a perfectly normal thing whether you are famous or not and its difficult enough to maintain one in that environment without the added stress that you will be focused on for merely looking at someone else let alone hold their hand.

After a recent TV show, it was mentioned in an article that a particular singer was still friends with some 'scandaled celebs'. The obsolete meaning of having been disgraced springs to mind, but in truth it was just an honest, if maybe a touch imprudent, mention of a past relationship that did the 'scandaling'. Again - its hardly a disgrace to be in a relationship, nor to admit to one.

Perhaps though the fault lies partly with the dangerously hormonal fans who seem to go nuts when their favourite celeb and a girl's name is spoken in the same sentence. The use of the word scandal is appropriate to them because it offends them just like a real scandal would offend us - the word starts to be used to placate these fans from doing demented things by saying "its ok, we agree, you have a right to be offended, of course its a scandal - how could it be anything else"

Demented fans and how they ruin the indutry is subject for a whole other blog post and one which... i sure do hope WILL be scandalous!!

i think some people might consider two celebs dating as being scandalous but sadly crazier and more risque things happen in the world. my view on what is scandalous differs. BB V aka Vanessa Hudgens having nude pics posted by her ex boyfriend when she was underage is scandalous. Fergie peeing her pants during a concert is scandalous.
