because you really dress any better?
I acknowledge the fact that it's silly for me to get worked up over this, but I'm still silly overall.
I have never been much of a fashion daredevil. I'm always comfortable in jeans and a tee, and my simply black fleece jacket is a must-have to my outfit. I rarely wear bright colors, and if I have to describe my style, it's just simple. Comfort first. And fittingly so, since I'm only 17.
Last week I was invited to my cousin's big 18th birthday dinner/ dance (Marriott). She wanted us to dress up for the event, and she specifically asked me please not to show up in my usual skinnies + hoodie combo. (She actually called me multiple times on Saturday to confrim this)
So I chose to wear a black bubble skirt that reached about mid-thigh.
Considering the weather, it was not the best choice. But still, what I heard was pretty fu*king rude.
Seeing as I am not a fan of "dancing",I chose to take a walk with two of my family friends. There's a favorite mall strip near the Marriott, so we decided to go there and browse around. Since I'm pretty familiar with the area, I saw a bunch of friends and decided to hang out with them when the two wanted to return to the party.
I was having a pretty good time, since I hadn't seen the girls for over three months--these were friends from middle school that were redirected to another high school.
And then I heard, right behind me, in a loud voice, a male saying to a giggling female (I imagine she was sneering):
"What is she wearing? In this weather too... Ridiculous..."
I only caught bits of it, and I guess at first it really didn't register. I'm not someone people often talk about when it comes to what I wear, mostly because my style is extremely conservative. It was only until we entered the bookstore that I realized they were talking about me.
And instead of being embarrassed, I wanted to go out there, find them, and slap them silly. It's kind of an odd reaction, seeing as how passive I usually am. I guess it was the initial shock of hearing such mockery for my choice of clothes.
Um, so. Tell me why you have the right to mock someone blatantly without any reserve. People like you... honestly... -.-' Without understanding a situation, you come so quickly to judge something or someone. What the hell is it to you if I wear something that isn't to your liking? What is it to you if I'm freezing my ass off? I didn't ask you to look at me, nor did I want to be put in the spotlight.
Though I admit I could have dressed in a more appropriate way, I don't think what I wore was so inappropriate that someone had to comment on it. It was formal wear, and reached past mid-thigh. I had a cardigan and a peacoat on, and I was dressed in simple black flats.
In the end, I think I'm still right. It just bothers me how many jerks there are in the world. And it bothers me that I missed the chance to turn my head around and glare at the stupid boy, and ask "What did you say again? Could you speak up please?". It bothers me that there are people who can judge motives and normal behavior simply from what a person wears.
I'm being completely honest-- I don't like to criticize others because of how they look and what they wear. It's become second nature to me, that when I hear "Oh my god, did you see..?" I avoid it and suggest conversations to move into another direction.
I have always done this, partly because I would never want to be put in such a situation. I wonder why there are others out there who can disregard this.
Don't be so obnoxious and think you know all. Words can really effect someone, so... choose them wisely. Yes, you were honest, but I still want to give you a piece of my mind. I did this for the sake of my cousin, and it's really none of your f*cking business to begin with.
So to anyone: if you want to trash talk about what someone's wearing, make sure that they're a safe distance away.
To those who are obnoxious and are bent on seeing someone humiliated because of you: go look for provocative looking girls (i.e.: skanks) who wear short skirts in the snow, not a poor innocent little girl who's dressing up for her cousin's party in 55-degree weather.
Thanks.
