Anyone else heard of Amy Winehouse?
She's quite huge in the UK, and is slowly rising in the states. Because her personal life (drugs/drunkedness) is freq on the headlines, people seem to forget that she's very talented and has a great voice for her genre. Love her songs "back to black," "you know i'm good," "love is a losing game" and "rehab." Listen to her on youtube or her site : http://www.amywinehouse.co.uk ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eu7uPHtTJ4o&NR |

Yeah.
She's hot, sassy, and has a sultry jazzy voice. I've been diggin' her for a while. -------------------- we all are self-interested, rational, manipulative actors.

I've known her since 2003 with her first album "Frank". I've saved up to buy all her singles also. I was so happy when I found out her album would be coming here in the states-it was only five days ago. She's AMAZING! Its like what EW said, out of the whole new packs of british invasion-she's THE best of the bunch. Thank you for making a thread on her.

her album is officially out in the US. she's #1 in the dl charts and she's made a decent debut in the billboards chart (#7)
rolling stones also named her one of the 10 new artists to watch out for this year: ARTICLE from rolling stones mag: Amy Winehouse Boozy British diva is a tabloid terror with a vintage Sixties-soul sound I should just be my own best friend," Amy Winehouse sings on her vintage-soul album, Back to Black. "Not john tesh myself in the head with stupid men." Unfortunately for Winehouse, without her failed relationships -- and her ongoing bout with the bottle -- there would be no Back to Black. "The black refers to being in a black mood, in a dark hole," says Winehouse, 23, who was raised in North London, surrounded by hip-hop. Back to Black veers away from the jazzy tone of her debut, 2003's Frank, as the singer indulges in her latest infatuations: Motown, doo-wop and Sixties girl groups. "All I listen to now is soul," she says. THE FORMULA (Aretha Franklin x Janis Joplin) - Food = Amy Winehouse SOUND While Winehouse's gritty delivery -- recalling Sarah Vaughan and Etta James -- belies her young age, it's a gift for writing about personal demons with a blunt, brutal and, at times, amusing honesty that gives Black its edge. On "Rehab," which is already a smash hit in the U.K., Winehouse refuses to get help for her alcohol dependency, singing, "I don't never want to drink again/I just, ohh I just need a friend." In addition to Winehouse's pipes, what sets the album apart from today's other soul projects is its vintage feel. "It's one of the best recordings ever," says Roots drummer Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson. "She's coming from Fifties and Sixties doo-wop, and they nailed that sound exactly." MUST-HAVE TRACK "Tears Dry on Their Own" Winehouse channels her inner Smokey Robinson to deal with a nasty breakup on this sould gem. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- *watch her perf at the brits 2007 at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWpcAyyyP1U LOVE her cute little dance moves! her perf at sxsw was really good too! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qRJt2NOgz8 |

I knew there had to be a Winehouse thread!
Winehouse is pretty young, but when she sings... it sounds as if she has such an old soul. You Know I'm No Good was my first favorite. Tears Dry on Their Own (reminds me of Marvin Gaye + Tammi Terrell's Ain't No Mountain High) and Love is a Losing Game are wonderful. You can't help but feel warm when you hear her sing. She is ridiculously talented. I read a review that described her as Billie Holiday meets Lauren Hill. ITA. I've listened to all the latest "British Imports" (James Morrison, Paolo Nutini, Lilly Allen, and Winehouse) and Winehouse, IMO, is the stand out. -------------------- surpr!se. ^^v

i like amy winehouse!!! i was about to make a thread about her but i figured someone probably already did it. i think i like "you know i'm no good" better than "rehab". I don't know which one i like better lily allen or amy winehouse. they are so different but they are both young and from the uk and slowly becoming famous here in america so of course they will be compared. but anyways back to amy winehouse, the video for "you know i'm no good" is so great too. i

I love Winehouse. Great voice
-------------------- "But when it ends and while it ends, something comes, after so much rage, persistence, obstinacy, extravagance; something entirely unexpected and touching in its mildness and goodness. With the motif passed through many vicissitudes, which takes leave and so doing becomes itself entirely leave-taking, a parting wave and call, with this D G G occurs a slight change, it experiences a small melodic expansion. After an introductory C, it puts a C sharp before the D. . .and this added C Sharp is the most moving, consolatory, pathetically reconciling thing in the world. It is like having one's hair or cheek stroked, lovingly, understandingly, like a deep and silent farewell look. . . . " (Mann: 55).

Although I found out about her through her 2nd album, I have to say that I am feeling her first album much more than her 2nd one. I love the jazzy tones of her first album it's sheer relaxing music.

She has a great voice, and I like what I've heard from her so far (still trying to get into her music), but she needs to seriously gain some weight. I'm surprised her voice is still soulful when she's so thin.

i love me and mr. jones -------------------- "[high school] is a fascinating place: old enough to feel truly adult, old enough to make decisions that affect the rest of your life, old enough to fall in love, yet, at the same time too young (in most cases) to be free to make a lot of those decisions without someone's approval."- stephenie meyers |

i have to say that amy winehouse is one of those addicting artists, just because her voice sounds so different from mainstream music. I realize that now she is getting much more popular in the states and i'm glad she is. i can't wait til she actually tours in america!. amy, come to d.c.!
anyways, both of her albums are great, the first one that came out, frank, is much more jazzy and bluesy and not as pop, but the second album has all great hits, and are definite songs that get stuck in your head. there is not a single song that i really dislike!! |

She's actually one of my favourite artists... I'm just absolutely in love with the song Back to Black.. It's kinda sixties I think... I don't care what her history with drugs and stuff is... she is a talented musician and that's all that matters to me...
