QUOTE (rachilde @ Jan 6 2009, 03:52 PM) *
No offense to the lovely ladies on this forum who are going to prom, homecoming, etc., but I think drag queen whenever I see dresses that are frequently advertised on prom dress sites. The reason why I think drag is because the dresses are tacky. Yes, they are grand. Yes, they are beautiful in the way that you desperately wanted a dress to be beautiful when you were five years old; but let's face it, there is no way anyone can wear a giant star burst of rhinestones under their boobs and look anywhere near sophisticated--unless you were a gay man in drag and then that'd probably be as sophisticated as you were willing to get. Of course, it's arguable that prom and other high school dresses are not the locations for sophistication. Honestly, I didn't look too sophisticated when I went to prom; but what I wore still beat the ass hugging hot pink number my best friend wore. I couldn't imagine having to wear my prom dress or any of the prom dresses typical of these types of threads out into the public after graduating high school, and that's probably one of the reasons why girls opt for the cheap prom dress: it's not like you'll ever get away with wearing something that tragic any time after high school.

But, if I could recommend this to the girls here, if you buy a really beautiful and elegant-looking dress that you could actually wear out into the light of day after you turned 21 and not be laughed back into the house, then you'd probably be making a pretty good investment. Let's face it, every girl will probably have to own an evening gown in her life: whether it's for dating those rich bachelors or becoming a concert pianist or having the misfortune of being forced to attend an opera: a girl needs an evening gown. But let's also face it: evening gowns, good ones that don't embarrass you, don't come cheap. I'd venture a really decent evening gown will not cost less than 150 dollars and can definitely go up to 2,000 dollars. Yes, it can be a huge investment. No, I'm not rich.

But if it's your senior prom and you've got no other ridiculously formal dances to attend with people who will know you've been wearing the same gown twice, I'd definitely suggest a splurge on something classic, simple, sophisticated, elegant, and flattering.

I agree with you totally - most prom dresses just make me cringe. Most of those dresses you posted were lovely, aside from the first one. For my prom this year I want something understated but elegant, and maybe in a cream/gold palette.

And this black dress is really beautiful, too.

La Femme have some seriously pretty dresses:

they have a huge range in different sizes and colors. have to go to the stores to know the prices.

OR... you could send a photo of a dress you like to somewhere like Milly Bridal with your measurements and they'll make it for you.. so it could fit better. I haven't bought with Milly yet but they seem to have decent prices depending on how difficult the dress is to make.

I just wanted to share these pretty dresses! rolleyes.gif

many many prom dresses look abosulutely gorgeous on thin, tall girls..
yet here i am..standing 5'2 inches..
what style dress would look good on me? =[
my hair is like super black..so i dont look good in black. and i dont like red either. =p LOL!

I was 5'2" senior year (yes I grew in college sweatingbullets.gif ) and I wore a un-altered dress with 3 inch heels. Only a handful of dresses are impossible to pull off without heels. Think of it this way, better be wearing heels than ballet flats to prom. I beg you not limit yourself to short short dresses, I have yet to see one that is presentable. I recommend a dress that is shorter in the front than in the back. It worked for me!

For reference, all these gorgeous ladies are shorter or the same height as you...

I think you should find a dress with ruffles at the chest or floaty volume around the bust area to make you chest seem more full smile.gif

something like this

but full length?

Hey guys, I need help trying to decide something and even though its for a military ball and not necessarily prom, its basically the same idea. So I'm 5'2" with a pretty skinny torso and small boobs but I have those thick ice skater thighs. My date is 5'4", so I'm afraid to wear heels because I don't want to be taller than him. I was wondering what type of dress would suit me the best. Also, I really want to wear flats, but I'm not sure if that would look so good considering that my legs seem kind of stubby to begin with. If anyone can help, that'd be great. :]

Hey! I was wondering if a girl ever dressed up in a girl-style tuxedo to your ball? And if so, how did she pull it off? I was thinking of doing something different for a uni ball - pants and all. I was thinking high waisted pants, satin blouse hahaha... : \
