Spain's Gasol offers apology
"To me it was little clownish for our part to be doing that. The sponsor insisted and insisted. They pushed because they're the people that pay the money. It was just a bad idea to do that. It was never intended to be offensive or racist against anybody," the New York Times quoted him as saying on its website (www.nytimes.com). "If anyone feels offended by it, we totally apologize for it." "I want to say that we have a great respect for the Orient and their peoples. Some of my best friends in Toronto are of Chinese origin," Calderon, who plays for Canada's NBA Toronto Raptors team, said in a message posted on his website (www.josemauelcalderon.com). "Whoever interprets something else from the photos has taken it completely the wrong way," he added. Source:http://www.reuters.com/article/GCA-Olympics/idUSLD24932520080813?pageNumber=1&virtualBrandChannel=0 I took some quotes from the article but you should read the whole article. For some of you guys who got extremely offended from this incident then I really do not know what to say. It was a racist act but I don't think it was necessary to go overboard on a relatively small issue. |

Some people are sensitive about this issue, some are not. But I'm just saying, its hard to say that its not offensive. People are playing it off that its okay, you know what I mean? |

I agree. That was a bad idea, they shouldnt did that shoot, because it can be offensive. But I think they didnt do it with racist intentions, even if the gesture is. They just ignored that it can be racist. Im Spanish, from Madrid. Do you really think we should be out as a candidate for hosting the Olympic games in 2016? I dont think we all should pay for this error. Youre being too hard. Im sorry, but I think some people here is prejudicing and being racist towards spain as well. This basketball team doesnt represent all Spaniards here in spain, there is a big number of Chinese people around us, and slowly we are getting closer. At least here, where I live, I dont see any racism towards them. I think the term ignorance is not only for the team, it can be used for some people here too. Care to explain the other incidents...Aragones remarks about Henry. Monkey chants in an england vs spain friendly football match. Bacelona's, Eto getting booed and monkey chants just cause he was playing badly also a black player in the team. (He was so pissed off he was about to walk off the pitch). What about the incident last year, in F1 "fans" covered in black paint in ref to Hamilton. And now this, seriously I dont know whether to laugh or cry. They are total idiots and I'm sure this wont be the last racist remarks towards another race or country. When will they learn and the thing is they wont learn unless they're punished-they're getting away with it yet again! -------------------- |

I'm not going to completely rail on them since I feel that ad was more out of ignorance than anything..but it's undeniably disprespectful as well. As Olympians (new or old) they should be a little more keen on racial diversity..it was an idiotic move that was not funny in any way. Morons I tell you. The athletes AND the people behind this photo.
Too bad China lost Spain At least team Spain got a nice a** whooping from Kobe, Lebron & Co -------------------- danny im . taeyang . kim hyun joong.

It's good that they made an apology.
I still don't understand what the big deal is. Racism isn't new. This is pretty small compared to other things that've been done before. Not saying this was right or not offensive...but yeah. (I actually laughed when I saw Pau. Just doesn't seem like something that big softie would do. Haha.) |

lol it's annoying when the excuse having friends who are some minority group supposedly deems that ur not racist...
i have black friends i can't be racist!!!1111! it's very sad that full grown adults are the ones making excuses for the ignorance, and that they completely don't even care why it's racist in the first place.. i'm sorry but to do that when the host country is asian u have to be the most dimwitted person on the entire planet -------------------- LOST . . . <3

USA will PWN their butt for sure! also, what happened to the South Korean men's basketball team? I know they have a team, at least before. because in the 2006 FIBA, the USA played S. Korea (although S. Korea lost pretty bad, by 40 points if I remember correctly) who does team USA play next? After they just beat Greece (yay!!) Is it Spain? Well, whenever team USA plays Spain, I hope USA beats their arse. Go Lebron and Kobe!! okay, now that the game is done, I guess you were right, they blew Spain away I was just being cautiously optimistic about the USA team because of their poor performance in 2004 and at the 2006 FIBA, but man, they really are a team with a new attitude and focus I hope they continue like this |

um wow they didn't stop to think and ask the photographer "um why are we making our eyes like slants?" ignorance is not a excuse
china should get back at them by taking a pose with "S" shaped toothpics in there mouths, i wonder if anyone will get that |

QUOTE "I think we are talking about things that don't matter," Calderon said when asked about the ad after the victory. "We feel bad, but there is too much talk about it. We are a very multi-cultural country in Spain. ^^Yeah, they're sorry about it . . . after all, it really didn't matter (sarcasm). -------------------- Thank you Tin_cutoi for the pretty icon and kpopchild for the gorgeous banner! ![]() My latest obsession is 三浦春馬 ♥ I will forever be a fan of 赤西仁 ♥ |

It was a racist act but I don't think it was necessary to go overboard on a relatively small issue. Maybe if the Spanish team painted themselves black for when the Games go to Angola, you'd think it was different. Then Calderon might say, "what? Racist? NO WAY!" -------------------- ![]() |

But seriously, I think Spain will be more ready this time, as they have more experience playing the US team. We'll see what happens. I'm being cautiosly optiministic again. |
