Utada becomes first Japanese musician in iTunes top 20Sat, March 28, 2009 (12:44am EDT)This week, singer-songwriter Hikaru Utada (26) became the first Japanese music artist to rank in the top 20 of the U.S. version of online music store iTunes.
Using the name "Utada," the singer released her new English-language album "This Is The One" on March 25. It reached 19th on the top U.S. albums chart. Ever since the iTunes music store went live five years ago, this is the first time that a Japanese artist has ranked in the top 100. The album also achieved 2nd in the Pop category.
The CD version of the album will be released nationwide in the U.S. this May, but with this level of popularity, there is a possibility that her new album will already appear on the U.S. Billboard charts on April 9.
For the past month, Utada's promotional activities have expanded across the country, which contributed to a great start. This is her second U.S. album, following up on "Exodus" in 2004. And even though "This Is The One" was already released in Japan on March 14, her representatives have set the U.S. market as their main priority, hoping to make it a great success.

Reading Utada's post "So much!" you can tell she has a big heart! Probably one of the biggest in the music world! But we know that already

I really like her music, and think I like her music more and more, for each album that comes by. But, as usually with Asian artists, Europe is totally neglected. But, probably, for good reasons. If there is little noise in US, it's close to nothing here I guess.
Although I'm a fan I didn't know she had released her album (digitally?) already. I knew only of her MV and guessed the album would be much later...
Utada about her posting a picture from her MV

"I hope I'm not "infringing on rights" lol
If I am, this photo will be taken down shortly lol "
She's the best!

I've been listening to her new album this whole day :]! Love it, Utada Hikaru is amazing.

I think we as her fans should help her promote her new album on the underground level.
Here are some of my ideas:
1) Make forum signatures of her new album so that people can be like...wait, Utada has an English album?
2) For those who work in retail stores like A&F, Hollister, etc. if you guys have the power to put Utada's English songs on....that'll would be great exposure.
3) Go on radio station sites, and request her single: Come Back to Me.
If she becomes popular enough, there will be more demand for her in the United States, AND then she can bring some of her Japanese influence music here!!! That's what she said on CBS news.

You lucky punks! I live in Europe. Its rare for Asian artists to perform here, Asian music isn't as popular here as in other continents. I wish I'd live in some parts of America at points, or Asia itself. I am one of few in my country who enjoy Utada Hikaru. I haven't heard all her songs so I cannot really judge her yet, but I really enjoy First Love.

come back to me is a really good song for an asian female to be singing, like her voice is so r&b.
i'm really impressed because most of her japanese songs she's singing with a higher tone.
with this song, it's much more deep and easy to listen to. definitely something an american audience can groove to.
the mv is nice. i like the concept of an asian female with an american man. that's hot. plus, they kept it simple and innocent which is pretty rare for american videos nowadays. i love it.
i hope she keeps it coming. big up to utada.

the interview on z100 this morning was really cute. elvis duran + the zoo seemed to the really like her, the part a little before they bring in utada where T tries to bring in some random lady, freaking hilarious, haha. thank god this interview was a little more different from the other ones she's done where they say the same ish over.. and over.. and over.. haha.
i went to the nyc sephora event and was five minutes late or else i would have gotten a wristband and gotten in.

i hope she does more things like that in the future. i'd be more prepared next time!

While I don't think the album is "OMFG OFF THE HOOK"
I think Utada did it well, I wish I could have saw her at Sephora but I had to work

I would most def spend money.
Hikki is playing her cards right, and I believe she is going to be the first successful asian artist
why? because she is simply doing her thing, she isnt rubbing it in everyone's face "OMG I'm asian plz support me" she is playing the game like any other artist would and she isnt using her asian background to hold her.

Ayumi compared to Britney? lol
None of the J-Pop divas should be compared to Britney and while I love Britney Spears, it's a little insulting to be compared to her. I mean... if you're talking about success, then yeah... I guess that's fine but that's as far as you can go with comparisons.

Utada is "american" and not only that she is a true musician which is why she is able to crossover.
But saying she'll surpass Britney....I don't think so, her songs are too mellow to do so.

When I'm saying that Ayumi is the Britney Spears of Japan, I mean that she's equal to her in terms pop status. You could've compared them back when Britney was actually beloved by America.

Neyo is a well known songwriter and does write alot of his own material.
The comparison between britney spears and utada can be from a success point of view, they both started at around 16 and have been a sensation in their respective markets.
Utada has also even been mentioning that she's made THIS IS THE ONE to be really mainstream so that its more accessible to the US market, which makes sense from a merketing perspective.
The thing that i like about Utada is that she still seems very down to earth and modest despite all the success she's had. She doesnt seem to flaunt herself or glam herself up - she's still the nerdy/cute Utada that i've liked since the very early days.

Yes. it's so insulting to be compared to one of the world's biggest pop star, right? And all the "J-pop queens" were heavily influenced by Britney, with the exception of Utada. But, they still have their similarities- they both can't sing.

Oh and let's look at the lyrics.
Utada - "Tight jeans, no panties on! Oops, did I turn you on?"
Britney - "All of the boys and all of the girls are begging to If U Seek Amy!"
And Utada didn't turn into a "rainbow" for the American market only. In her song "traveling" she sings about perking her breasts up for attention.

Apr 3 2009, 08:19 PM
^ I guess your comparison works if you only look at 2 or 3 of Utada's songs. For the most part her songs don't focus on sexy lyrics (Her new album I guess could be arguable, but thats one album out of how many?). Especially her Japanese work.
Popularity and success-wise it's probably a good comparison, but that's about as far as it goes, at least to me.
I think the reason people get insulted is because Utada does more than just sing her songs. She MAKES them. Yeah, Britney probably wrote some of her lyrics, but she didn't make the songs herself. Plus Utada definitely doesn't act like a diva. To me she doesn't even really act like she's famous. And when you say someone is the Britney of Japan or something like that most people probably imagine a sexed up Japanese girl. XP

Apr 3 2009, 08:37 PM
i dont even knwo why ppl compare them together...
like utada is japan's britney spears.
cuz their music style is sooo different, but i guess they are just comparing based on their influence and status?
most utada's works in japan were so poetic, like her First Love, Enternally, and Prisoner of Love and many more..
...and I think Utada can definitely sing, her voice might not have that vibrato thing or like Mariah Carey but her unique voice makes her...unique right?
gee
