i guess you are talking about 'ㄱ' and 'ㅋ'

ㄱ when romanized is originally typed as 'g' like 기 (Gi)
while ㅋ when romanized is typed as 'k' like 카 (Ka)

but i think the consonant ㄱ has exeptions where it was placed as the latter part of the character like 학(hak) where the ㄱ in the character basically becomes 'k' not 'g'


hope i hlped you out there, even though im not a korean speaker.

I'm having trouble responding to this sentence:

교수님 연구실로 전화할까요? <--not sure what this sentence translates to.

We're supposed to say no using -지 마세요 and then offer a different thing to do.


Also in the next sentence you're supposed to fill in the blank using (이)라서 or 이/가 아니라서:

오늘은 ________ 길이 많이 막혀요.

I'm not exactly sure what will fit appropriately in that blank.

your explanation is good, but i'll just elaborate a little more......

the difference between g and k rominizations is tricky....

ㄱ can sometimes be a "g" or "k", depending on where it is in the sentence.
for example 강아지 (puppy) it is with a "k", kang-ah-ji
가란 말이야 (go, i said go!!) its with a "k" too, ka-rahn-ma-ri-yah, you don't ever hear ppl say ga-rahn-ma-ri-yah

but in 인기가요 , you know the SBS music show program Inki gayo.....the first ㄱ is pronouced as "k" and the second one is pronounced as "g"

감동적이다 - (i am touched)...its with a "g" too, gam-dong-juh-gi-da. Hmmm...the second ㄱ in this case, can be gi or ki, I have heard ppl say it either way....so confusing right?

So you just gotta know when its a g or k, from listening to how ppl speak....

and yep, ㅋ is always "k", or rather a harsher "k" so "kk"

ㄱ represents [k] and [g]sounds. when ㄱ is in front of a word, it is pronounced as [k]. but in this case you shouldn't pronounce English [k] sound. do it weakly. when ㄱ is between voiced sounds in a word, its pronounced as [g].

for example, in 가게(store), the first ㄱ is [k] since it is in front of the word, and the second one is [g] since its surrounded with voiced sounds such as ㅏ and ㅔ.

So 강아지 [kangaji], 가란 말이야 [karan mariya], 감동적이다[kamdongjeogida] is correct.

as for 인기가요, need to explain more. when 인기 means "popularity" its pronounced [inkki], and when it means "someone's personalty", its [ingi]. in this case, 인기 means the formar, so [inkkigayo] is correct.

haha.. phonetics of all the languages are quite different each other. its real......... tricky.

That doesn't just affect the K and G sounds. It's the same for J/CH, D/T, B/P...

Romanization is really tricky when it comes to Korean. Some people write 가게 as kage or gage. The thing is, Korean is just full of many sound changes and rules.

Whenever ㄱ,ㄷ,ㅂ,ㅈ is the initial (first) part of a word, they sound like *soft* versions of k, t, p, and ch. However, they sound like normal g, d, b, and j the rest of the time. When they end a word and there is no vowel after them, then they sound like k, t, p, and t. HOWEVER, they all may even sound like ㄲ,ㄸ,ㅃ,ㅉ at certain times too! And of course, there are separate letters for the real k, t, p, and ch sounds (ㅋ,ㅌ,ㅍ,ㅊ). But beware, there are still sound rules that will take effect... See the examples.

바보 - babo, but sounds a bit like pabo
가게 - gage, but sounds a bit like kage
자자 - jaja, but sounds a bit like chaja
다다 - dada, but sounds a bit like tada

And so, many non-Koreans cannot tell the difference between sounds like these:

가다 - gada
카다 - kada

...but Koreans can.

발 (bal, which sounds a bit like pal) and 팔 (pal) mean "foot" and "arm," but non-Koreans may have trouble telling the two apart.

Various examples of sound changes:

학 - hak
학이 - hagi, NOT haki
한국어 - han-gu-guh
빛 - bit, NOT bich
꽃잎 - kkon-nip, NOT kko-chip
인기 (popularity) is pronounced 인끼 (in-kki) not in-gi, as in "someone's personality"
치과 is pronounced 치꽈 (chi-kkwa) not chi-gwa
할게 is pronounced 할께 (hal-kke) not hal-ge
어떻게 is pronounced 어떠케 (uh-ttuh-ke)
갔다 - gat-tta (같따) NOT gass-da
독립 - dong-nip, not dokrip

etc

So... If you are not Korean and you only learned Hangeul (the Korean alphabet), you need to learn the sound rules. You will not be able to read Korean fluently just by learning the letters.

생각해 (seng gahk hae) - in imperative form, 'Think'
몰라도 (mohl lah doh) - even if you don't know. I think you would mostly hear '몰라도되' (mohl lah doh dweh) which means 'You don't need to know.' =)
몰라서 (mohl lah seo) - because person didn't know (the subject is variable according to the sentence)
