No problem! Glad I helped =)

누나(nuna) is how MALES refer to older females, and
언니(unnie, unni, onni, etc) is how FEMALES refer to older females. =)

Make sure you say the right thing, or you might get weird looks. laugh.gif

QUOTE(msjang @ Apr 16 2006, 12:52 AM)

Thanks to fkfkswk and Jaeho for the explanations!!

And yeah I have trouble with 발, 팔 and with the pronounciations of Jan. and Feb. 일월, 이월, cuz when pronounced, it is really different from how it is written, especially for Jan.
Also what about 궁 (palace)? Altho ㄱ is the initial part of a word, it is pronouced as a "g"...

mastering Korean phonetics is definitely challenging (to a foreigner)!!!

*edit*
oh yeah and i've noticed that 진짜, is pronounced like 친짜, i guess since ppl want to emphasize that word, since it is an adverb, like "you are realllllly pretty"

No, no, no... Please read what I said again. Those have nothing to do with emphasis.

궁 is romanized as Goong or Gung by many people... but like I said, ㄱ sounds a bit like a soft K when it is the initial part of a word. So, it sounds a bit like Koong when spoken.

Same for 진짜. Since the ㅈ is the initial part, it sounds like a soft Ch, but is romanized mostly as jinjja.

Here is another example:

동방신기 is romanized DongBangShinGi by many people, but 동 sounds a bit like Tong because ㄷ is the initial letter. If their name was JUST 방신기, then it would sound a bit like PangShinGi because ㅂ is the initial letter.

My name, Jaeho (재호) also sounds a bit like Chaeho because ㅈ is the initial letter. A name like Sujin (수진) however, will sound like Sujin and not Suchin because ㅈ is not an initial letter.

^ The first one has the Hanja next to it so I think it's talking about the sino-korean term.

別 - 1. 다르다 (to be different)
2. 나누다 (to divide)
3. 헤어지다 (to part from/farewell)

I think in this case, it seems to part from.

Mianhe - Sorry (casual)
Mianheyo - Sorry (polite)
Jwesonghamnida - I'm sorry (very formal/polite)

이 is never pronounced Li. It is always i (eeh). People write the last name 이 as Lee because it used to be 리 (Ri) but then got changed to 이 in South Korea a long time ago. In North Korea, the last name is still 리.
