I think Items, unit and objects answers that but maybe you were looking for examples.
Examples:

비누 두 개

So...since this is correct...

전 혀 못 해요!

would this be correct? Informally?

난 혀 못 해!

No. First of all, the spacing is all wrong. It's 전혀 못해요! It means "I can't do it at all!" 전혀 means "at all." So, 전 isn't the contraction of 저는. Spacing is very important!

welcome to asian night. thank you for attending = Asian night 에 오신것을 환영합니다. 참석해 주셔서 감사합니다.

pronounciation : asian night eh ohshin guseul hwan-young hapnida. Chahm-suk-hae jooshyuhsuh gahmsah hapnida

-----

could anyone help me pronounce the pronounciation? lol i know that sound stupid but im having some trouble reading it, such as the "jooshyusuh" and "guseul" part, thank you

Don't make a fool out of yourself and try to read it in front of everyone. Just kidding. But you need to know the basic sounds of Korean in order to read romanization... But here's a REALLY Englishy version of romanization that may help:

Asian Night eh oh-sheen guh-seul hwa-nyuhng ham-nee-da. Cham-suhk-heh joo-shuh-suh gam-sa-ham-nee-da.

In case you dunno what these vowels could be:
uh : like the "u" in "sun"
eu: kinda like the "oo" in "book" but not really

how can you tell the difference from a "ㅈ" and "ㅊ" same goes for the ㅂ and ㅍ and ㄱ and ㄲ?? it all sounds the same to me O_o. Can a native speaker tell when someone is pronouncing those wrong?? I have tried pronouncing them over and over again but I don't get it, it sounds the same! sweatingbullets.gif

You really need someone outside the internet who knows Korean to help you with the sounds.

Here's something I posted a month ago. If you need more help, please say so. ^^

QUOTE
Whenever ㄱ,ㄷ,ㅂ,ㅈ is the initial (first) part of a word, they sound like *softer* versions of k, t, p, and ch, meaning that you don't use puffs of air. However, they sound like normal g, d, b, and j the rest of the time. When they end a word and there is no vowel after them, then they sound like k, t, p, and t. HOWEVER, they all may even sound like ㄲ,ㄸ,ㅃ,ㅉ at certain times too! And of course, there are separate letters for the real k, t, p, and ch sounds (ㅋ,ㅌ,ㅍ,ㅊ). But beware, there are still sound rules that will take effect... See the examples.

바보 - babo, but sounds a bit like pabo
가게 - gage, but sounds a bit like kage
자자 - jaja, but sounds a bit like chaja
다다 - dada, but sounds a bit like tada

And so, many non-Koreans cannot tell the difference between sounds like these:

가다 - gada
카다 - kada

...but Koreans can.

발 (bal, which sounds a bit like pal) and 팔 (pal) mean "foot" and "arm," but non-Koreans may have trouble telling the two apart.

Various examples of sound changes:

학 - hak
학이 - hagi, NOT haki
한국어 - han-gu-guh
빛 - bit, NOT bich
꽃잎 - kkon-nip, NOT kko-chip
인기 (popularity) is pronounced 인끼 (in-kki) not in-gi, as in "someone's personality"
치과 is pronounced 치꽈 (chi-kkwa) not chi-gwa
할게 is pronounced 할께 (hal-kke) not hal-ge
어떻게 is pronounced 어떠케 (uh-ttuh-ke)
갔다 - gat-tta (같따) NOT gass-da
독립 - dong-nip, not dokrip

etc

궁 is romanized as Goong or Gung by many people... but like I said, ㄱ sounds a bit like a soft K when it is the initial part of a word. So, it sounds a bit like Koong when spoken.

Same for 진짜. Since the ㅈ is the initial part, it sounds like a soft Ch, but is romanized mostly as jinjja.

Here is another example:

동방신기 is romanized DongBangShinGi by many people, but 동 sounds a bit like Tong because ㄷ is the initial letter. If their name was JUST 방신기, then it would sound a bit like PangShinGi because ㅂ is the initial letter.

My name, Jaeho (재호) also sounds a bit like Chaeho because ㅈ is the initial letter. A name like Sujin (수진) however, will sound like Sujin and not Suchin because ㅈ is not an initial letter.

So... If you are not Korean and you only learned Hangeul (the Korean alphabet), you need to learn the sound rules. You will not be able to read Korean fluently just by learning the letters.

Hope this makes sense.

^thanks I guess I have to listen to those sounds over and over again until i get it sweatingbullets.gif

I was learning from this website and it had
옷 안에 지갑이 있어뇨.
but you say it as 옷 안다네 지가비 있어뇨.
I don't understand why they added "다".

And how come you the "ㅊ" has alot of different ways to pronounce it when it's at the end of a syllable and how can you tell how to pronounce it. LIke why do you pronounce the ㅊ in 꽃잎 as a "n" sound when it is like a "ㅊ" in 꽃을 and then it sounds like a "ㄷ" in 꽃위???

꽃잎 as 꼬닙
꽃을 as 꼬츨
꽃위 as 꼬뒤

What site are you learning from? There are typos in those sentences.

It's 옷 안에 지갑이 있어요. It's pronounced 오다네 지가비 이써요.

As for the sound changes, it doesn't just apply to ㅊ. Every letter has sound rules. There are so many sound rules that don't think I can list them all. o_O;;

Here's a site where you put a sentence and it tells you how to pronounce them and why it's like that:
http://164.125.36.46/new_webspller/pronunc.htm

It's really useful, but the rules are written in Korean.
minwoogrl
whoops well 오다네 지가비 이써요 is what i meant to type somehow i just got sooo confused blush.gif but is the "다" added b/c of a pronounciation rule?
EDIT:: oh wait i get it the "ㅅ" at the end of 옷 is like a ㄷsound and it gets carried over to 안 and so you get 다 right??? w00t.gif but now I even more confused LOL. Isn't 옷 a separate word? so why do you carry the ㄷ over?

for that website what is 29항?? the rules? well this is what I got but I don't understand it
제29항 합성어 및 파생어에서, 앞 단어나 접두사의 끝이 자음이고 뒤 단어나 접미사의 첫 음절이 '이, 야, 여, 요, 유'인 경우에는, 'ㄴ'소리를 첨가하여 [니, 냐, 녀, 뇨, 뉴]로 발음한다.

옷 a separate word? so why do you carry the ㄷ over?

It carries over because Korean is just like that. o_O;
Like 지갑 없어 sounds like 지가법써 for example... Korean is really flowy.

I'll try to translate that whole thing... but later. lol Unless someone else does. (I really hope so) XD

By the way, 29항 is "rule 29"... which means there are many MORE rules. LOL

Do you carry the ㄴ in 저 over to 일 when you have a sentence like 저는 일본말 선생님이에요. Does it become 저느닐본말???

Do you carry the ㄴ in 저 over to 일 when you have a sentence like 저는 선생님이에요. Does it become 저느닐본말???

It does... unless you pause after 저는 or something. Or if you emphasize 일본말.

edit:
But think about this. In English, when you say "I am a," it sounds like "I a-may" right? But then other people stress the "a."
Same thing in Korean.

does anyone know where I can find a name guide for the korean characters? Not a pronunciation guide, but a name guide like if I were to name the letters of the English Alphabet it would be:

A: ae
B: bee
C: see
D: dee
...
W: double u
etc.

I just want to be able to ask "how do you spell this" and know what characters they're referring to ^^;

btw, if you're in a restaurant and you want to ask for an extra something like "can you give me an extra bowl of rice?" how would phrase that question?

i don't think the internet is a great place to learn korean esp. if you're completely new to korean. you should go find a korean person and let them teach you. like when we right soft "b" i don't think one can actually get it. someone wrote the example of babo = pabo but that's not really right beccause i would assume that if you don't know korean you're going to pronounce the "p" with a "p" sound. it doens't sound like a p, but a b, but not an english b. it's really hard to explain

and you don't carry over the "ㄴ" in your sentence above. you should pronouce all the syllables. it doesn't become 저느닐본말 cause that makes no sense. if you say that to a korean, they're going to be like you mean 일본. best thing to do is just say the one syllable all together and not carry one over. if you say it right and fast (nhot fast but w/o hesitaiton, it automatically carries it over. if you attemp to carry it over yourself it sounds completely wrong.

also when you were talking about 꽃 (flower), when the 'ㅊ' is usually below the "vowelish part" then it's pronounced with a "t"ish sound.

What are you trying to do? Trying to correct me? Because I know what I'm talking about. sleep.gif (I made this topic)

If you read the whole thing I wrote about pronunciation, you would've known I never said babo was actually pabo. I've explained everything about the sounds the best I can, and you wouldn't have said what you just did now if you actually READ my post. Also, I said that if you say 저는 일본 quickly, it sounds like 저느닐본. Since you know Korean too, you should already know that a lot of people "slur" or carry over consonants a lot.

And I already said that learning Korean over the internet isn't the best thing to do. I said that countless times. So why are you saying that again?

오히려 약간 빠나나 삘 나지 않냐??
이쁘게 생겼던걸~~~ 오오오
유녕준 아주 좋아겠어?!?!ㅎㅎㅎㅎㅎㅎㅎㅎ

and he replied:

윤영준: 어 나 게 좋아하는데? ㅋㅋㅋ
좋아하는 애랑 같이 프람갔는데
좋지 그럼 싫겠냐? ㅋㅋㅋ
감히 내 친구에게 빠나나라니
빠나나 맞긴 맞다 인정..
하지만 내가 한국적인 문화를 좀 주입해줬어 ㅋ
And this is a totally different post, but I dunno if it has anything to do with me:
좋아하는 사람 만들면 여름내내 어떻게 할라고..sleep.gif;;
어쨋든,~~~ 굿럭!!!
아~~ 나도 김가네 그리워.ㅎㅎㅎ
야, 학원 근처에 봉주루라고 진짜 맛있는 퓨전 중국집

거기 가는거야.ㅎㅎㅎㅎ

help me please.....translate this, anyone??

Oh, she's Japanese?
Really? She doesn't look Japanese.
Rather, she kinda reminds me of a banana ("whitewashed"), don't you think so?
She was pretty though... Oh-oh-oh~
Yoo Young Joon must've been happy, huh? lol lol lol

Yoo Young Joon: Yeah, I like her, so? lol lol lol
I went to prom with someone I like.
Of course I was happy. You think I wouldn't have been? lol lol lol
As for calling her a banana...
Yeah, you're right.
But I crammed some Korean culture into her. lol

Whoa, that almost sounded like a speech. lol lol
Hey, my highest goal was getting into RISD back then. lol And when I chose RISD, who was the one who gave me the chance to rethink it? lol lol lol
And hey, is being a banana that bad?
I didn't know... That was just my impression.
But yeah, she sure is pretty. But Young Joon, before you graduate,
what are you gonna do all summer since you found someone you like?
Anyway, good luck
Ah~ I miss KimGaNe (a restaurant?) too... lol lol lol
But near my hagwon (afterschool), there's a good Chinese fusion place called BongJuRu
It's near Elite, and let's go when we get some money lol lol lol

Quick question as the what this translates to.

호동이는 혁재가 결코 두렵지 않아

It's for X-Man and it was one of the lines that wasn't translated for the Chinese sub.

Hodong is never afraid of Hyukjae

how do u say:

CRAZY
JERK
WANNA DIE!?

in konglish?!

is it bich0s0 (crazy), sagaji (jerk) ?

Crazy, as in "you're crazy" - 미쳤어 (michŏssŏ)
Jerk, as in "really rude person" - 싸가지 (ssagaji)
Wanna die? - 죽을래 (jugŭlle)

does anyone know where I can find a name guide for the korean characters? Not a pronunciation guide, but a name guide like if I were to name the letters of the English Alphabet it would be:

A: ae
B: bee
C: see
D: dee
...
W: double u
etc.

I just want to be able to ask "how do you spell this" and know what characters they're referring to ^^;

btw, if you're in a restaurant and you want to ask for an extra something like "can you give me an extra bowl of rice?" how would phrase that question?

much thanks

Try going to wikipedia and search for Hangul. The letters' names are there. You can also check out the sites on the first page of this topic.

밥 한 그릇 더 주세요 - Please give me another bowl of rice.
add ~더 주세요 (please give more) to the food you want

i can't translate it fully, but it has something to do with uploading and the fact that you can't start downloading. My guess is the person is still uploading the file to their clubbox. Make sure that there's a blue down arrow for the file that you want to download. If there's a yellow up arrow, that means the person is still uploading the file to their clubbox.

^Thanks a lot for explaining ^^
