Jaeho

How did you learn your 한문??
P.S. How old were you when you first learned it??

I`m fluent in Korean, but I'm not proficient in the old Chinese characters =[

Well, I use an online dictionary a lot for Hanja. laugh.gif Still, I know some Hanja, but it's not like I know thousands of them. lol I'm not sure how much I know though. Maybe like somewhere around the 100's? That's actually bad. unsure.gif I can't even write a lot of them, but I can recognize them. I still have more to learn obviously. I started to absorb some Hanja when I was like 14 or so. Oh yeah, I also do a bit of independent Japanese learning, so that kinda helps too. But I'm not serious about learning Hanja. That's just something on the side.

in korean it would be 1등 2등 3등... 등

Yup, it's Song Mi Hye (Hye sounds like Heh) 송미혜

People write 희 as "hui" sometimes because it's spelled like that in Hangul, but it's pronounced like HEE/HI.

Thanks Jaeho for answering me^^

도노반을 찾아 왔니?
도노반을 찾아 오셨나요?
bsu
^ Thanks much! I like the second one. Is 오셨니 never used? I swear I heard it before...
rycekrispies1212
^ Not if you're actually talking to the person you're referring to, because that combines both the respectful form and the informal form, which doesn't make sense. It works if you're talking to a friend (or someone you may use the informal form to) about the person though.

That explanation's kinda confusing. ><
bsu
^ Thanks you two! That was such a dumb mistake. X-D

^ Thanks much! I like the second one. Is 오셨니 never used? I swear I heard it before...

ie
you just came home and you're asking your little bro/sis if your parents are home

야, 부모님 집에 오셨니?

the 오셨 would be a way lower yourself from your parents and 니 would be the part where you talk to your peers

is it confusing??? it is kinda confusing in a way
Jaeho
^ Another example would be one of your parents' friends saying that to you. For example, he is superior to you, but he is being respectful to your parents by using -셨.

Another example:

아저씨: 어머님 주무시나?
꼬마: 네.

Who is it directed to/talking about? Depending on that, it can mean something along the lines of, why you can't understand that one thing or why he/she can't understand that one thing...

Yes, for the most part. There may be some differences in the speaking language, like something you may say in Chinese people may not say the same thing in Korean, but the characters have the same meaning. Yes, the first word, which is saggun in Korean, means incident.

this would mean
why can't you even understad that?

왜=why
그거=that
하나=one
이해=understand
못 하는지=can't do

yes, if we break it up and put the words together, it doesn't make any sense
하나 would be "even" instead of "one"

왜(why) 그거(that) 하나(even) 이해(understand) 못하는지(can't do)

why(왜) can't you(못하는지) even(하나) that(그거)?

in a better context wise

난 네가 왜 그거 하나 이해 못하는지 모르겠다
i(난) don't know(모르겠다) why(왜) you(네가) can't(못하는지) understand(이해) that(그거)

According to the US government it's in the top tier of hardest languages in the world next to Arabic Chinese and Japanese

Therefore easiest way to learn Korean = be born to a Korean mother =P Like your friend
I will learn it some day..Just no time for another language at the moment..So this thread better still be around in like 4-5 years..haha

Tamago86 is right. When people say Korean is easy to learn, they don't mean the whole language. The Korean WRITING SYSTEM (called Hangul) is easy to learn. ^^;
