던 is NOT short for 더니.
I explained what 던 means, but ~더니 means 'they (past verb)~'. for example, '웃더니' is 'they laughed (and did something else)'. It explains something that happens one after the other.
며 is not short for 면서, but they DO have the same meaning.

Btw, Umm i'm learning korean from this textbook.. and it has almost 3 whole pages on how to use 이/가 and 은/는 so i thought i'd type up the summary of it since people were asking.. Hope i'm allowed to be giving advice haha? and sorry guys.. i suck at typing konglish, so i just typed korean..

Subeject particle 이/가 puts a focus or sportlight on the noun before it(often the subject), and the topic particle 은/는, which has three functions
1-Mark it's noun as the sentence topic
2- to point out a contrast
3- to mark it's nouwn as old or given or assumed information

When you first mention a subject-when it's new info- you attach 이/가 to it. if you repeat the subject at all afterwards, it's become old info and usually has the particle 은/는.

1- 이것이 무엇이에요? What's this?
2- 그것은 우산이에요. That's an umbrella.
3- A long long time ago, a man (사람이) lived in the mountains. One day, he (그 사람은) came down from the mountains and...
4- 이것이 무엇이에요? 그것은 잡지에요. What is this thing? (That thing) is a magazine.

Then it goes on about how in korean you don't need to keep mentioning the subject, and that you can drop it if you want to make short sentences.. Though if you use it again, old info so u use 은/는.

lol ... Stacking seems like a weird way to describe. You sorta have to ... Add it.

First the consonants - ㄱ ㄴ ㄷ ㄹ ㅁ etc.

Then the vowels - ㅏ ㅑ ㅓ ㅕ ㅜ ㅠ etc.

ㄱ + ㅏ = 가. ㅅ + ㅜ = 수. ㅎ + ㅐ = 해.

// There words alot of times can't stand alone. Like 가 and 수 aren't words but can make the word 가수 (Singer). But 개 (Dog) and 게 (Crab) can be an exception.

Then you can add another consonant under that.

가 + ㅇ = 강 (River). 수 + ㄹ = 술 (Beer). 벼 + ㅇ = 병 (Bottle)

// These words can be left alone or joined. Like 술 means Beer and 병 means Bottle while 슬병 is Beer Bottle. haha. But like 없 or 할 needs another "syllable" like 없어 (Don't have) or 할수있다 (You can do it.)

i was wondering about pronunciation beacause a lot of times ill see a word written out but it will be pronounced differently then it looks like some of the letter are prnounced differently like they ahve differenet letters there. are there certian words that can be said with say replacing one of the letters or is it that certian letters can be pronounced like other letters?.....ah i dont really know if thate made sense i hope someone can understand my question

Korean actually has pronunciation rules, so not everything is pronounced the way it's written. Examples:

있다 is not pronounced iss-da, but actually 잍따 it-tta.
꽃잎 is not kkoch-ip, but 꼰닢 kkon-nip.
etc.

There are many pronunciation rules. It's like how English isn't pronounced the way it's written.
So just because you learned Hangeul, it doesn't mean you can read everything correctly.

^ i guess you're asking if there's a difference in pronunciation? i know people will argue all day about this because there is technically a difference, but the difference has become so slight and unused in common speech that it's not taught differently anymore. most people, particularly around seoul, pronounce it the same, and education authorities mandate that it's to be taught the same.

anyway, the two sounds are like the e sound in hex, peg, meg, ted, etc. the ㅐ used to be pronounced more like the a in advantage, accessory, etc., i think. perhaps, if i'm wrong on the ㅐ thing, someone can clarify, but i do know it's now taught as the same sound.


many of the irregular pronunciations follow certain rules, but i don't remember all of them off the top of my head to go through right now. there might be some that you have to memorize.

Shi Kye (식혜) is a Korean sweet drink made out of rice. (I think that's what you were talking about)

uh.. that's not an easy question to answer. it depends how the two verbs are being put together. anyway, i can't think of every rule right now. it's easier just to explain the one you're asking about. whenever you say someone goes/comes for the purpose of X, then it's written with the Verb+러 form. Example.

The person goes to visit.
그 사람이 방문하러 간다.

sorry, i can't give you a more complete explanation of every formation, but i think it'd get confusing, anyway. it might be better just to figure out one example at a time.

and what would be the difference between 'ouri' ['we'] and 'ourin'??

걸 = 것 + 을 (the difference is 걸 adds the direct object marker) - there are other uses of 걸, btw, but in the one you're mentioning, this is the difference.

못 = can't/안 = not

우리 does not have the topic marker 는 that 우리는 does. 우린 is an abbreviation.
