partially right. in korea, "electricity" or "bodypart falling asleep" is called "ji" (지). rat is also "ji" (쥐).
different spelling, same pronounciation. so they're kinda licking their nose and sometimes they add cat meows b/c it's just a tradition... supposedly i guess, the cat is chasing the "rat" away blink.gif

oh....really????
thanks for the info...... wink.gif

Okay, I think I got it... maybe. ^^; So 갔어요 is definitely the correct spelling, but unlike what you could assume it IS pronounced "gass" and not "gat"?
And about the carrying over... You mean that since the "ss" was originally part of the "ssŏyo", it's carried over and thus still pronounced as a "ss"? But if the original syllable was, hypotheticall, actually "갔" and the "ss" didn't come from some other ending, it WOULD be pronounced "gat"?

If I understand correctly, then this helped a lot... Thank you!

I think you're making it harder than it is...

갔어요 - the ㅆ carries over because there is a vowel after 갔. Korean has lots of liaisons (?) so you wouldn't stress any part of the syllable... just say "gas-ssuh-yo" freely... it would sound weird if you said ga-
SSUH-yo or GASS-uh-yo... Does this make sense? I think you need to hear a sound clip or something... lol

갔다 is pronounced "gat-dda" (같따) because there's a consonant in front of 갔.... and the "da" naturally turns into a ㄸ because that's just how our mouths work

If 갔 was alone, then it would be "gat"... but it is never alone...

I'll ask again. What's "He's over there" in Korean?
I'm saying this to my friends. I need the romanized one.

Thank you to those who answered my past question.

Hi everyone!
I need some help. My friend's family is letting me stay at their place for a while and they don't speak very much English. The problem is, most of the Korean I know is banmal... sweatingbullets.gif

Could someone give me useful- and very formal- phrases I could use around the house? Stuff like "thank you for having me over", "sorry for the inconvenience" or anything else that you think could be very useful to know. And is there anything to say when leaving/entering the house in Korean like there is in Japanese (itte kimasu, tadaima...)?

I'd really appreciate the help laugh.gif

-some formal phrases; if they are too hard for you, then let me know and i'll make easy stuff for you ^^
also if you can't read the korean then let me know...
1- Thank you for having me over - 저를 집의 인바이트 해주쎠서 감사합니다^^ (when leaving)
2- If I was any problem to you, I'm very sorry. - 제가 다둘 불편하게 많두러쓰면, 재송합니다. (when leaving)
3- Hello, nice to meet you I'm ....! - 안녕하세요, 방갑습니다 저는 .... (then say your name; its polite). (introducing)
4 - Bye! (when you leave the house, you say.... 안녕이게세요. ) ( this is a must when leaving.)

*also bowing when you meet them and when you leave is required;; but if you're not korean then it might not matter; cuz they shouldn't expect you to do it if you aren't.

hmm...if you need anymore help pm me or something;;

서투시네요 comes from the word 서투르다 which means unskillful or still not able to use very well

and waiting for you is 너를 기다릴거야

팽귄- Yes, It's means "Penguin"
와우...?
와우: I don't think it's a real term, it's just spelled/pronounced: "Wow" (?)
베이러브: This isn't a real term also. It's just spelled/pronounced "Bay Love" (?)
바비- Spelled/pronounced "Barbie" perhaps.

i think the translation that would make the most sense is "ratings suck because of me." 시청률 is like the percentage of the audience, which is what a rating is. i would bet it's just a self-deprecating joke that someone made on a show.
