People pronounce 에 and 애 the same now, but trust me. It should be 아예샤 according to Koreanization rules.

If the foreign vowel sounds nothing like the "a" in "cat," and if it's like the "e" in "yes," then 에 is used. Otherwise, it's 애. Apple - 애플, red - 레드, etc.

Something I can't explain, but have to record. 에 I pronouce more to the back of my tongue, 애 is at the front. Because everyone pronounces the two the same nowadays, I was raised to sound 애 all the time. I didn't realize 에/애 were different sounds (and 외/왜/웨 too) and so my dad taught me how to pronounce 에 correctly. I must have repeated/practiced more than 1000 times+ to get it out of my mouth smoothly. It's fun stuff.

I just downloaded an episode of Music Wave (Epi. 32). I'm not sure if thats the latest. Anyways in it, they invited a caucasian duo to sing a korean song! I like it!! I think I heard it before but cant remember when and how. I took a snapshot of the title of the song. So can someone be kind enough as to tell me what it says. Would also be cool if you know who the original singers are!

I have a question for all you fluent readers. Have you always known how to read/write korean (assume that I mean you leanred around the age kids learn how to read at all) or did you learn AFTER learning english?

I am a native English, Spanish, and Korean speaker, but I don't read/write korean fluently. I CAN read and I CAN write, but reading is slow and when I write my spelling is often incorrect.

So my question to the people who learned how to read/write as a second language is- how long did it take you to be able to read/write pretty fluently and how you got better at it. FYI, I have been teaching myself and don't go to school for it or have someone teach it to me, so it's a bit tougher.

I learned Korean before English although I started learning English at around age 4-5.
And although you're asking ppl who learned it as a second language--- I would suggest trying to read a Korean novel and trying to translate that and noticing first hand how the spacing works, grammar works, spelling works.

I learned Korean [reading/writing/speaking/everything] and then started English when I was 3.
I was born in Korea and moved here when I was 2. haha

I was pretty fluent when I was 2. It may sound impossible, but I was pretty quick.

I was born in the US and learned Hangeul (the Korean alphabet) when I was like 10 from my mom, but I grew up speaking Korean and English. I only went to Korean school for a couple of months at that age, but that was crap. It didn't help me at all. Basically, I learned how to read, write, improve vocab, etc through interaction (family, friends, internet), websites, books, etc. What helped me most was asking my parents when I had questions, reading books and stuff online, and learning some stuff from Korean language sites like http://urimal.cs.pusan.ac.kr/urimal_new

I am still learning more and more each day, but I am fluent. Still, I'm not COMPLETELY fluent like 'real' Koreans, but I'm close to it. I guess I speak Korean better than the average Korean-American. My parents' friends always think I just came to the US. lol The last time I visited Korea was when I was 8 or so... I'm almost 18 now.

I learned as a child in Korea. I moved to Canada when I was about 6 years old and I put off Korean for MANY years (8-9+) because I was too busy getting involved in the Canadian/American world. I didn't start re-learning until 1.5 years ago. Reading/writing came very fast to me because I already knew it but just haven't done it in so long. Took me about 1-2 weeks to learn how to type korean letters on the keyboard.

Reading smoothly isn't as easy as people make it seem, and notice the people who say that are either for-long-time native speakers or just don't know crap about korean. There are alot of sound changes, some are automatic and others are really wierd. It takes a while to have it roll off your tongue easily. I read alot of korean textbooks/newspapers so it's easy for me. I just ordered 장화 홍련 so I'm excited to take myself through my first korean story-book.

Spelling will just come along because you see it all the time. Don't trust the intarnet though, alot of people spell things wrong. The first time I browsed through someone's naver blog I was so confused o.o

Question for you, how long did it take you to be fluent in spanish? I really do want to learn it and I was happy to hear from my spanish instructor that my pronouciation was surprisly good =D I find that korean and spanish share more sounds than korean - english ^^ And I listen to alot of Shakira.

I was born in Australia, and learned to read and write Korean at around.. 2 or 3. I was speaking by then, of course. I learned English AFTER Korean, since Korean is my mother-tongue.

Reading and writing is most well improved through reading and writing yourself. I mean, reading novels, and writing short letters to your friends.. things like that can really help.

I'm fast at learning languages, so it wasn't too difficult for me to learn to read and write. I'm not as fluent in reading out loud and speaking as native Koreans, but when I tell people that I was born in Australia, they're all amazed. ^^;

Well I was raised in a multicultural home. My mom spoke to me in Korean since birth, and my dad spoke to me in Castellano (Spanish) since birth. (My mom is Korean and my dad is Spaniard)

So I have always been fluent in both languages. Now, my mom and dad had to communicate with eachother in English, which my dad is completely fluent in. My mom speaks pretty good english, broken english however. So that's how I learned English. Plus the fact that all of my school years have been in English speaking schools. I'm an fluently trilingual SPEAKING, but only bilingual in WRITING (English and Spanish). learning how to read and write in Spanish is cake. My pronunciation is a little different from most people's though because I speak with a Castellano tongue, where there are minor changes in pronunciation. To me it just sounds like Spanish with a lisp. lol

That is SOOOOO AWESOME that you can speak both Korean and Spanish.
I learned Spanish while in high school, but I didnt retain anything, so basically it was a waste of time. Plus I dont have interest in Spanish like I do in Korean. So learning Korean is sooo much more fun, better for me.

Yeah, reading in Korean is difficult, especially if you are learning it as a 2nd lang, which is the case for me. I think out of writing, speaking, and reading Korean, I think I am the worst at reading. I read sooo slow and pronounciating those irregular sound changes is quite hard for me. I have been learning Korean for 3 yrs now, but its still that way....haha. its funny how I am more comfortable with speaking than reading, normally its the other way around for 2nd lang. learners. That just proves Korean reading is quite unique and challenging, neh?
