I was never really into Regina Spektor's music until I heard "Fidelity" from her latest album, Begin to Hope.
I think this is by far one of the best albums of 2006, and also one of the most unnoticed albums/artist of 2006.
If you don't know of Spektor, she has a very soothing and light voice, and her music has this charming coffee-house vibe that's a bit anti-pop while also being anti-folk. But it's her lyrics that I love. It's been a long time since I've found an artist that can so beautifully and simply articulate the feelings of love, being hurt, and happiness.
My personal favorites from Begin to Hope:
"Fidelity"
"Better"
"On the Radio"

I first discovered Regina's music when I was watching Vh1 one day. Her video for Fidelity was playing and I thought it was really weird and I changed the channel. When I was flipping through the channel later in the day, I was bored and watched a couple of videos and Fidelity was one of them. The song was catchy and the lyrics were great. I decided to check out her website and I listened to a few more of her songs from her older albums. I fell in love with her random and bizarre lyrics. I even checked on youtube to watch some of her live performances. Eventually, I saved up money and picked up her most recent album. My favorite songs are "samson", "music box", and "hotel song". Some of my other favorite songs of hers are "reading time with pickle", "the sailor song", and "poor little rich boy".

Disc: 1
1. Fidelity
2. Better
3. Samson
4. On The Radio
5. Field Below
6. Hotel Song
7. Après Moi
8. 20 Years Of Snow
9. That Time
10. Edit
Disc: 2
1. Another Town
2. Uh-merica
3. Baobabs
4. Dusseldorf
5. Music Box

I love Regina, her voice is beautiful
I saw her open up for The Strokes a few years back. I was weird though, because everyone looked confused while she was on stage.

That's an odd match up.
I always feel really bad for the artist who is fairly unknown and the opposite sex of the headlining band, especially if the featured group is predominantly male and the audience female.
The best match up for me, was when Brand New was opening for Dashboard. Two of my favorite artists...

Definitely one of the gems to come out of '06. I wouldn't exactly call her anti-folk tough. She's also quite well praised by the online music community. You shouldn't compare her popularity to the likes of Timberlake and other flavor of the day "boy bands" with pretty faces. These days, it seems that even a lump of dog shi.t is able to become a billboard charting musician. Sigh.

i think that regina spektor got much more famous due to her latest album, plus she was on numerous tv shows like grey's anatomy! however i looove her stuff from before, just the simple piano and her lovely vocals. there isn't must to think about when listening to her songs. i like the imaginative nature of her songs!!
if you ever get a chance to see her live, i would totally recommend it!
