Disney shows first black princess
Maddy, unveiled at a Disney meeting
The Frog Princess will mark a return to traditional animation
Disney's next animated fairy tale, The Frog Princess, will feature the studio's first black princess.
Maddy is an African-American girl living amid the faded grandeur of New Orleans' French quarter.
The movie will also see a return to the hand-drawn animation process, instead of using computer animation that has become the industry standard.
The film will be made by John Musker and Ron Clements, the team behind The Little Mermaid and Aladdin.
Cajun charm
Walt Disney Studios chairman Dick Cook said: "The film's New Orleans setting and strong princess character give the film lots of excitement and texture."
Composer and singer Randy Newman will provide music for the film, which promised an "unforgettable tale of love, enchantment and discovery with a soulful singing crocodile, voodoo spells and Cajun charm," a Disney spokesman said.
The studio said its new princess will be added to its collection of animated princesses used at the company's theme parks and on consumer products.
The film is set for release in 2009.

Sounds interesting; glad they're being more diverse. I loved when Mulan came out and this sounds pretty neat too. The storyline already seems cute.

The princess is really pretty. I will probably buy or rent the movie because seeing Disney movies at the theater is terrible. Crying kids.

^ LOL.
I always wondered why the kids would cry in a Disney movie (at least the recent ones)
completely off-topic but was anybody else disturbed by the massive genocide in Finding Nemo?

it's about damn time. i remember a while back on BJJ there was a discussion as to why there were only Caucasian princesses (with the exception of Mulan and Pochahantas) and alot of people were upset about it (not just black ppl) also i think that Disney should expand and have a princess from other places as well....like how Belle is French,Mulan is Chinese,Pochahantas is American Indian,Jasmine is Arabian...etc. i think it would be really cool for them to eventually cover the globe with princess stories...that would be frawesome©

YeeeaaaaH! Thanks to John Lasseter I bet. I think I'm going love that Pixar dude, now creative director of Pixar and Disney. He's the one who got rid of Gnomeo and Juliet, a story about tacky garden gnomes loosely based on Romeon and Juliet and the push to revamp Toy Story 3. And with John Musker, Ron Clements the team who gave us The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and so on, at the helm, this has a good chance of being great!

In a animation.
Yo...I have been waiting for this moment my whole life. But seriously Japanese cartoons give dark skinned characters more screen time than American so thats why I love Anime. Alice in Wonder Land will always be my one and only from Disney. Other than that Disney can burn.

Trust me on this one...more than American. If you look at it not in terms of race but tone of skin color then that would be a lot. Although some do have more distinctive features such as lips and nose, and there have been some coonery, but I'll give you two examples now.
Eureka 7Hilda
Matthieu
Linck
BleachYoruichi
Kaname Tosen "9th Division Captian"
But the American characters are naturally easier to relate to however....sooo much generalizations. So I'd rather watch the Anime and give them a pass for minor offenses.

I haven't watched Cowboy Bebop for a long while. The thing you are reffering to about someone stealing Ein. The guy's name was Hakim right? I think there was another was the episode mushroom samba. There were a few black folks and one a woman. I remember one guy's name was domino. Those are what I remember. As for Jet, his skin looks light to me.
Given what I have seen throughout my time, I believe you. There are more black people in american cartoons and comics than in anime/manga. Anime has some too but maybe not in the way you're thinking or would like. Still, there are black people in anime and you just have to look hard to find more. Now for the topic I'm thinking, I'm thinking of what to say for it and I will spend a little while thinking of the way to make it.

yes.. we need a real asian princess...
Mulan was NOT a princess. But she is a Hero =)
Jasmine is another asian... I think Aladin sorta reminds me of Tom Cruise too. why is he the only one that doesn't have to wear a turban?
the closest Disney has put someone from east asia are the siamese cats from lady and the tramp and Mulan, who did win a war and save all of China

but a princess would be cool.
