February 8th 2007, Hangeng guested on China's famous talk show "Date with Lu Yu". Regarding a youth's aspirations, debut's obstacles, bittersweet memories, embarrassing yet hilarious incidents... In the nearly two-hour live chat, we listened to Hangeng talk about his lesser-known personal story. After hearing the interview, one feels touched that these countless experiences, intertwined with laughter and tears, are what has accompanied Hangeng to this day. It too let us believe more firmly that no matter how distant and dangerous the path ahead is, we will unswervingly be your invisible wings, forever protecting you, soaring together with you!


一切出自无心
2001 年 12 月， S.M. 在中国举办 [H.O.T. CHINA] 选秀大会，韩庚从 3000 名参赛者中脱颖而出，开始了不平凡的璀璨之旅。
其实我没有考虑那么多，只是朋友要去参加选秀，我陪他一起去试一试，看看能不能选上，结果朋友没有考上我却考上了(笑)。当时考场有2、3千人的样子吧，就象普通的面试一样，说让我跳舞，我就跳一个舞；说你再即兴跳一个吧，那我说好吧，我就即兴跳一个；然后说我给你随便放音乐，你再跳一个，我说行再跳一个。接着又说你唱一首歌吧，我一听唱歌就……因为我是舞蹈专业出身的嘛，从来没正经唱过歌，心一慌，我该怎么办啊？结果就唱了《月亮代表我的心》，要说当时唱得好不好啊……应该是不好的吧(笑)。考试最后，他们就让我站在那里，跟前摄像机来回转几拍，看你上镜不上镜。那个时候我很傻，不知道那是在干什么，也不懂什么叫上镜，什么都不知道，就傻呵呵地站在那儿。因为我以前在舞台上跳舞从来没有摄像机，所以很少去关心那些东西(呵呵~)。

Unintentional Beginning
December of 2001 in China, S.M. hosted a “H.O.T. China” Audition Casting, Hangeng stood out from the rest of 3000 contestants and began an extraordinary and dazzling journey.
Actually I didn’t really think it over. It’s just that my friend was entering the audition and I went along with him to try it out, to see if I could be chosen. However in the end, rather than my friend getting picked, I was admitted (laughs). At that time, the examination hall had about 2-3000 people, looked just like any other regular interview. They told me to dance, so I did a dance; they told me to do another free-style dance, so I said, “okay I’ll dance a free-style one.” And then they said, “We’ll randomly select some music for you, so dance again.” I said okay and danced again. After that they told me to sing a song, as soon as I heard them tell me to sing… it’s because I came from a professional dancing background, never sang seriously before, so I got nervous, what should I do? In the end I sang “The moon represent my heart”*, and whether at that time I sang well or not?... well, probably not (laughs). After the exam, they let me stand over there in front of the camera to shoot a bit me, and see whether or not I’m photogenic**. Back in the days, I was very foolish, didn’t know what that was for, and didn’t know what it means to be camera-friendly, didn’t know anything at all, just stood there idiotically. It’s because before then, when I danced on stage, there had never been any cameras, so I pay very little attention to those sort of things (hehe~)

是金子总会发光
经纪人总结韩庚的四个条件：1跳舞棒，2唱歌好，3长得帅，4最关键也是最重要的━人品佳！
我还是第一次听说自己有这么多优点，经纪人一直都没告诉我的说(笑)。我也从未想过公司能选中我，当时面试完以后，他们让我过去填个表就走吧。那时老板还对我说，如果被选中了就去韩国培训，成为一个亚洲明星，问我愿不愿意，父母愿不愿意？我当时觉得应该没问题吧，爸爸妈妈那时还不知道，反正就先答应下来了。於是填完表，我自己就打车回去了，我把我那个朋友彻底忘在脑后了(大笑)。因为到了考场就发懵，让跳舞就跳舞，脑袋一片空白，什么都想不起来了。
得知消息的那天，我还在和朋友一起上网玩儿游戏。朋友跑过来说：“韩庚，那个韩国公司找你，说你已经被选上了，要找你签合同。” 可我正玩儿得开心呢，而且也不相信，就回他：“你别瞎扯，我不行的。” 他说：“真的，你快回去吧~” 我：“等会儿，再过一个小时的。” (笑) 后来回去，朋友就给了我一个电话号码，就是现在经纪人的电话。当时我没有手机只留了宿舍电话，而且宿舍电话还不能直接打，得用200 卡才成。我就给那边打过去，我还在想是不是朋友逗我呢？会不会打过去根本没这事儿呢？带着疑问接通了电话，我：“喂，这是不是 S.M. 的 xx 先生。” 对方：“哦，是，你是谁啊？” 我一听，啊~ 我是不是被骗了 我：“我是韩庚” 他：“啊啊，韩庚啊，你已经被选中了，准备要签合同。” 我心想，天啊~ 没有骗我，天上掉下了一个大馅儿饼。

If it's gold, it will shine
Manager concluded Hangeng's 4 qualities: 1 dances well, 2 sings well, 3 looks handsome, 4 the key point and most importantly---excellent character!
This is actually the first time I’ve heard that I have so many merits, my manager had never told me that (laughs). I also never thought that the company would choose me. After the audition, they just let me fill in the application before I left. At that time, the boss said to me, if you get chosen, you’d go to Korea for training to become a superstar/idol in Asia, and asked whether I would be willing, whether my parents would be okay with it. At the time, I thought that shouldn’t be a problem, my parents didn’t know about it yet, but in any case I just agreed to it. So then after the form was filled, I took a cab by myself to go back, and had completely forgotten that friend of mine in the back of my head (laughs loudly). Because I was stupefied the moment I got to the examination hall, I danced when asked to, and my brain went totally blank; I couldn’t remember anything.
On the day of receiving the news, I was with my friend playing games on the internet. My friend ran over and said, “Hangeng, that Korean company was looking for you, said you had been chosen, wanted you to go sign a contract.” But I was happily playing games, moreover I didn’t believe it, so I replied, “Don’t kid around, I’m not good enough to be picked***.” He said, “Really, you should go back quickly~” Me: “Wait a while, in another hour.” (laughs) After I’ve gotten back, my friend gave me a phone number, which is the number of my current manager. At that time, I didn’t have a cell phone so I only left them with the dormitory’s phone number. Plus you can’t call the dormitory telephone directly, you’ve got to use the 200-card****. So I called that number while thinking is my friend pulling a prank on me? What if I called and it wasn’t like what he told me? With my doubts, the call got through. Me: “Hello, Is this Mr. XX from S.M.?” The other: “o, yes, who are you?” I heard that and thought, “ah~ Am I getting tricked/conned?” Me: “I am Hangeng.” Him: “ah ah, Hangeng ah, you’ve been selected, get ready to sign a contract.” I thought, “Gosh~ They did not trick me. A large pan-fried stuffed pie has just fallen down from the sky*****.”

***Not sure what he means, he literally said, “I can’t.” So it might also mean “I can’t take it (the news).”
****No idea what is a 200-card, probably a calling card? Also, it’s unclear if he said “you can’t call the dorms directly” or “you can’t directly call out of the dorms.” But seeing as to he called the manager, it’s probably that you can call into the dorms directly.
*****It’s a Chinese expression that basically means “Something really good just happened”. Think of it as something really nice suddenly got dropped off at your lap.
