I'm asian and I listen to metal (mostly underground like death metal or prog. metal) and some think it's wierd. - even my friends think it's wierd.
And since there aren't many asians that listen to stuff like that, there are other asians that think I'm whitewashed when I'm not.
I don't really care what others think. I just listen to what I like.
Have you ever been judged by the music you listen to?

oh yes.
Everyone in school thinks I'm weird because I don't listen to a lot of the popular songs (in America)
and listen to songs from UK and Asia.

Ha.
Yea.
I listen to asian music everyday, never american music, or UK music, unless it's in my mom's car. Not that I hate foreign music, just so happens that I love asian music and seldom like to listen to all those hip hop and rnb music...and besides Kpop, is the real hip hop...if that makes sense, LOL.
Hmm, I don't think my friends know much about this, but yea...they do know I'm not updated with american music though. And some know I listen to music my own language.
I remember I showed my friend this DBSK song. She didn't like it and dissed them

"I don't know what they're saying or even the meaning of this song, what the hell..."....argh, at least say the beat is good or something, LOL.

i guess people don't know that they can sing acapella that is singing
without music. next time they diss, ask them to sing to you without any music, and
on key bet they can't do that 'cause not many people can.
i listen to japanese rock and my friends think i'm goth except for a couple, the rest think i'm "emo". people who use the "word" emo can kiss my ass 'cause that's not even a word and it sounds ridiculous. i listen to almost any asian music and that's where i draw the line. xD

All the time.
One of the first questions I'm asked is my name, age, then my music taste. o___o
I prefer Asian music to all others. It's just more appealing to me, but I don't resent Western music, I listen to it when it's on but I don't make much of an effort to.. Sometimes people say I don't look Asian so when I say Asian music (since no one here knows about k-pop, j-pop, bollywood, j-rock, etc) and they automatically think I'm weird or a Asianophile o___o I AM ASIAN! ..err anyways, if they know I'm Asian then they automatically think 'fob' If I answer rock or heavy-metal they make a 'wtf? you?' face-.-; If you answer pop they answer with 'that's gay' If it's country they would answer with 'redneck' (I don't listen to country music, but yea this is what people here answer with >.<) If I say hip hop or rap they say it's black people music and I should listen to that s__t O.o wtf? Maybe it's just were I live (no diversity), so the ignorance level is through the roof. Anyways the answer everyone is looking for around here is Rock. Unless your 'different' -.-;
If I answer with anything else (which I do), they turn the other way after about a minute-.-; Music is a big thing to judge people by over here. Specially with those high schoolers <.<

Let's see I am Nigerian-American and prefer to listen to ASIAN music over American music on a daily basis. I know more about ASIAN music than American...yeah my family, friends, and fellow African Americans think it is weird that I'd rather listen to this than lets say 50 Cent. But to me I like what I like and they'll have to get over themselves. If they'd only give it a try they'd get it to you know...there loss. But yeah the judging is pretty annoying!!!

^ Im a huge DBSG fan and not being bias or anything fan or not, they have incredible acapella. They're voice is unique and awesome. I love it. Back on topic-- Yeah, Im judged because I love listening to Jrock (Visual Kei) bands and I dress more of Lolita or Japanese punk fashion when I go outside. It's common to wear this in Japan but here in the US I get judged a lot. People tells me that JROCK/Visual Kei bands are like "devils, girls.." whatever but I dont care. I love JROCK musics -- they dont know anything so Im guessing they only assume. Assuming doesnt lead you anywhere so yeah.. =x

Yeah. A lot of people think less of me because I listen to rock and pop and hip-hop. And pretty much none of it is American. So a lot of the time I don't fit in with people because we simply don't have the same tastes. And a lot of people, especially the rock fans, just don't get the fact that I listen to music that I like, not just one genre. They just can't accept the fact that people who like rock can also listen to crappy pop music. :/
Basically, my point of view is described perfectly in the quote in my signature. And not too many people share that point of view, whether they realize it or not.

I'm Chinese and my parents are from Hong Kong. So basically I grew up listening to Cantopop. But now that I'm older, I've abandoned music from HK. I listen to Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, and UK pop. My parents think I'm weird because I don't understand Japanese or Korean, but I don't care. I mean, I like the melodies and the voices of the singers, so why care about what langauge the music's in?
Like others, I don't really listen to American music, unless it's from the 90's.
But I do admire people who listen to metal because my ears are too weak for anything like that.

People are always surprised when I tell them I listen to Asian Music ..on a daily basis
And either give me weird looks or say "thats so awesome!" But I seriously think they're just saying that
I guess it's because they think I'm white washed/can't speak my mother tongue (though I can.. pretty fluently too

Apr 7 2007, 06:49 PM
I listen to almost all genres of english songs, I avoid reggae, country, trance, heavy metal, screamo as much as possible though. Basically the uncommon stuff, but I'm cool with the rest although I am picky with the lyrical content and artist. Like for rap, if the lyrics are garbage like 50 Cent's, forget it.
When I'm listening to rock around rap listening buddies, I get laughed at or shunned out and I get asked "How can you listen to all that screaming?"
Yes ladies and gentleman, every rock band out there screams.
When I'm listening to hip hop, R&B and whatnot around rock listeners, I get the same reaction as I do from rap listeners.
When I'm listening to Asian music around non-Asian people, they don't really care because they assume I understand it, asian stereotyping

(I'm Cantonese/Vietnamese, I listen to Korean and Japanese stuff. I don't understand most of it unless I look up translations.) But when I'm listening to Asian stuff around Asians, they give me weird looks and reactions because they know I don't understand it.

hahaha here where i go to school ppl are so obsessed abt stuff that are foreign... and with me being a foreigner, like it's justified that i listen to asian pop and ppl just think it's cool and different... i mean, everyone else listens to weezer or fallout boy or coldplay or whatever band is currently 'in', and to me, that's more embarrassing than liking cheesy asian music... it also helps to have a self-deprecating attitude while admitting your musical taste... like my friend really likes this uk band 'muse' and told me to listen to their songs... i didn't mind the song, but i wouldn't listen to it on a regular basis... so i said "it's not my type of music, maybe i'm just not as cool as you are... see, i listen to jazz... and cheesy asian pop." and he went

"that's awesome..."
of course, the fact that i love jazz and swing and big band music kinda balances it out...

Apr 8 2007, 05:16 PM
ya people do that, esp if your listening to something your image doesn't connect to, like the way you dress and act, and what you listen to
for example: im pretty preppy, i dress like im in my 20's, but i love to listen to 80's punk(toy dolls, the clash, etc, Metal(metallica, etc), rock, and i dont touch mainstream crap( most of it), people are usually surprised that i listen to stuff like that.
another example: if you dress in punk clothing/emo, or w.e and you listen to stock and pop and all that happy jazz, poeple are shocked.
its all about association by impression.
people not only assume your label they also judge you based on your taste of music, thats how it is.

YES, they always do it to me just because i listen to mostly asian music
like everytime they ask what im listening to and i say [insert some asian song], they would just be like " oh its asian music again.." it makes me so mad
and the other time my friend asked what song i was listening to and i said [ hiphop/rap song] she automatically had a shocked face, she was like "omg you listen to rap? i thought you only listen to asian music" >< >< >< ><
and they always expect you to understand all of the asian music you listen, which i dont understand alot cause i listen to mostly korean and japanese and im viet, they all start asking why i even listen to them then if i dont understand. its not like i start bagging their music out, i respect their choices, but it doesnt seem like they do for me.

Same here. I don't have much problem with Japanese or Korean songs, or the older Chinese songs, but I absolutely despise(apologies) the new age of Chinese pop, save for some pretty decent rock bands and singers. Still I've stopped listening to Asian pop years back and it feels weird to start on them again.
The irony is that where I am, being whitewashed is actually pretty 'cool', though too much borders on 'poseur'. I'm hella a judgemental person so I don't get very close to people who listen to Chinese pop, especially boybands. And being the retard I am, I can't stand people who puts only songs from the radio on their Ipods too, screams superficial to me.
I believe that the sort of music you listen to reflects very much your personality, and on that, it's very hard not to be judgemental.

Because of my race (black) everyone assumes that i listen to rap and hip-hop. (man, do i hate stereotypes).

which i rarely, if at all, listen to
I have two clashing feelings about my music taste. Its so widespread and very eclectic <3. though it may seems "wishy washy" i really do like:
indie music, j-pop/rock, k-pop, icelandic, metal, x-core, screamo, trance, urban gospel, showtunes, the whole "underground" Christian music scene (which includes several of the mentioned genres)
on one hand i'm proud- i've never wanted to be a mindless follower of mainstream or just like everyone else. on the other hand it can get really awkward. none of my close friends listen to asian music- (not to mention that i'm not asian), christian rock, etc. and all the hardcore stuff i like? there are virtually no black people in that scene and its like crazy.

that's weird... i can't imagine anyone making fun of me for listening to asian pop. people EXPECT me to listen to asian pop... maybe because i'm an asian girl and i admin a kpop music forum... and they're surprised that i'm not a huge expert on it, although i like hamasaki ayumi, faye wong, boa, and jay chou. i also like 90's grunge, which makes sense because it's the first kind of contemporary music i ever listened to... and i love all sorts of classical, which makes sense because i played piano and clarinet all throughout my youth. no one judges me negatively for any of that... even when i put on my odd DBSK song, no one says anything.
the problem is, i also love muse, AFI, NIN, evanescence... along with similar-sounding groups that are less famous... and i get told that's like the basic musical preference of a thirteen-year-old white boy. i don't like any of the cool college-rock indie groups i should like... which is too bad because i'm joining a local band with more esoteric influences. but oh well.

haha... i feel you, and i was just wondering about that... you really never see any black people in metal. i was just telling my brother white people can be almost whatever -- hip-hop, goth, emo, umm britney or whatnot -- but minorities sort of automatically get grouped into certain genres, even if it's not who they are... like how i said people assume i know everything about kpop when i don't.
