Thanks Xarthan!

So, scanning the board really quickly, I noticed there are a few other Soompi users who are also Mac users!

I wanted to start a thread for Mac Users to share news or topics, questions they may have about the OS or hardware, issues they're having with their Macs, or just things Mac related (creative work done on a Mac?!) Feel free to also post other Apple related news or links smile.gif

So, if you're a Mac user, share what you have! What Macs are you running? When did you become a Mac user? What's your next Mac going to be??

Anything Mac related, feel free to post smile.gif

I have a PowerBook G4 12" - 60G ComboDrive.
It's my first Mac I got about a year and a half ago. I love it <3 Hopefully my next mac will be the iMac, I won't get a new notebook for a while, though. Maybe after I graduate college I'll get a new one.

My reasons for getting a Mac is easy: when I was in elementary school all through high school I went through these crappy windows computers that will shut down whenever they felt like it, restart whenever they felt like it, freezed all the time, was INCREDIBLY slow, and the blue screen of death paid me a visit constantly. It was so annoying, so I was dead set on getting a mac and went to the Apple Store constantly playing with the computers ha ha. XD I will NEVER go back to PCs lol biggrin.gif

Awesome! We have the same PowerBook I bet smile.gif It's really nice! It's small and compact. Everyone who sees it (even though it's older) is like, "OH! I love your computer...which MacBook is that?!?!) - LOL.

I actually loved tinkering with Windows and didn't mind reformatting every 6 months. I thought it was normal since all my other friends would say, "yeah, I reformatted and now my computer is running great!" We'd get together and reformat and then fight with driver issues. LOL. As much as I would dread it now, It was pretty normal back then smile.gif

My reason for switching was because of a girl (seriously) and also because I got my one and only virus -- it wiped out over 5 years worth of music and photos. A friend of mine had the virus and she sent me some exe file which had it. I didn't even bother to check (because, i assumed she was 'safe') and ran it. Weeks later, I lost everything.

The girl...she was a Mac user and needed help. Before that, I would just scoff and say, "buy a PC" (I was the uneducated PC user who had no clue what the Mac was about, just that it 'sucked' because everyone else said so...) I was like "OKAY! I need to learn some stuff about Mac (or, at the time, MAC smile.gif) and realized it wasn't as backwards as I thought.

I am not going to bash my PC. I love my thinkpad as much as anything. I am a proud owner of a T20 and T60. I am not a super nerd who knows everything about PCs, but I do know enough to fix my problems and prevent myself from having any problems. My first desktop was a HP with very little hardware space and a low Celeron processor. It died because of hardware issues (fan died, computer burnt out), not Windows fault. But let's not go there.

The reason I got a Mac is because I would like to know more about their hardware and softwares. The ins and outs and abouts, ya know. It isn't an entirely new world, but it is different in some aspects. And my answer to "Mac or PC?" Really, I like both. The both have their negatives and positives.

Cool, maybe you guys can help me out. I have a iBook G4 and have been having alot of problems with it lately. It's been known to randomly freeze, telling me to reboot it, crashing and stuff. I was wondering if you guys have had this problem in the past and what I should do about it.

Hi pyunghwa,

Do you still have your original CDs that came with the iBook? I would suggest running the Apple Hardware Test (could be RAM going bad...although, the iBooks have known to have Logic Board issues....hopefully that's not it!!)

Also, what version of OS X are you running?

I agree SongBird--I'm actually really glad to see this thread hasn't turned into a Mac vs PC flamewar...which, hopefully it won't. There are definitely merits to both operating systems. And the IBM T-series are very nice!!

Xarthan VERY NICE! I'm envious wink.gif

Yeah I get told that my computer is nice all the time, mostly 'cause of its size. I love that it's so tiny and I can take it anywhere without a problem. Too bad they don't offer notebooks this size anymore, but I think for my next one I'll probably like to try out a bigger one, a nice 17-incher.

And what a sweet story on how you became into macintosh! All to help out a girl.

As for the virus passage, I really did think like SongBird. XD

how do you like your Mac mini ? i'm still wondering if i should get a Mac mini or an iMac

I'm not a Mac user......yet, but I do have question about Apple's softwares.

So far, I have never had serious problems with PC. I know what I'm doing so I don't have problems, very few. I'm positive I'll occur few problems when I use a Mac, but I won't know until I use one.

So here's the question.

What softwares come with the Mac pre-installed? For example, I know the iGarage is one and iWorks. That's about it. I want to see how many of these softwares are already installed. It's probably because of these softwares that it costs a lot for a Macbook/Macbook Pro.

I'm in charge of media stuff at my church, so these softwares might become useful for me. Just a link or a list will help. I'm not planning on getting another laptop until next year or 2, buts it's good to research stuff early. happy.gif

For me the decision was simple as I wanted something low profile. I just use a kvm switch to use an existing monitor for the mac mini. The mac isn't my primary pc and I only use it for work purposes. The imac has a much larger profile and is overkill for my needs. I just need something that will run osx. I think it really depends on what you're planning to use your mac for.

Hey yangster,

That's awesome (the church media stuff) -- You might want to check out: http://www.apple.com/getamac/stuff.html

Depending on the Mac you purchase, you'll get software geared more towards consumers or professionals (3rd party, bundled software that is...) If you have any other questions, feel free to ask smile.gif

haha 4bit? Was it an EGA graphics card from Hercules? laugh.gif

Actually I was stuck with 8bit color until 1993. Then i bought a Radius DirectColor GX graphics card for $299, which had a 1MB of VRAM. But it was enough to give 24bit in 640x480. Seeing full color photographs on my computer without dithering almost made me wet my pants. sweatingbullets.gif Didn't take much to please me back then lol

I agree! I was rockin' on a 4 bit monitor in 93 as well (Commodore 64/128) -- "Upgraded" later...was a bit sad to "move" on though.... I had a ton of games for that machine (you wanna talk about pirating....laugh.gif)

I heard this is a Macbook problem, though correct me if I'm wrong. I'm not familiar with the reason why this happen to Macbooks. Faulty logic board, perhaps? You should definitely talk to Apple support and have it fixed or replaced because Mac's not suppose randomly shut down.

To all the soompi mac users, do you guys/girls use antivirus programs on your mac?

Right now, I feel like I don't really need to so nope I am just using commonsense and computer knowledge to stay away from shaddy sites/downloads/etc. I am sure with increased users it could lead to increased security issues in the future.

Anyone?

^I didn't because, like you said, I didn't see a point. Bur right now I have Virex by MacFee(sp?) only because my campus started to only allow computers with anti-virus software to use the campus internet, so I had no choice. sleep.gif;; I honestly think it's MEGA annoying, but if you want added security, then go for it.
Xarthan
nope, I don't use any antivirus programs.

I'm a Mac user. Nice to meet you all.

I have a 14" iBook G4 (PowerPC / 1.07 GHz / 60GB HD / Combo Drive [In hindsight, I wish I got the SuperDrive])

I got a laptop when I left for college -- that would be 2004

As for the question about viruses, I have the ClamXav program on my computer. It's a free anti-virus program. I only run it probably once every 4 months though since it's quite slow to scan the whole system. It has proven useful in detecting a Windows trojan on my computer though. (I acquired the virus because one of my research projects required me to have 200+ webpages saved on my computer, so the scanner detected the virus embedded in one of those webpages.) It never had any adverse effect on my computer, but I removed the affected files anyway.

i'm a 13" macbook user. i got converted last year and i laugh at all my windows friend when they have problems with their computer. wink.gif i love mac and i'm considering the 17" imac.

I've been using a Mac for a long time. My first Mac was the lovely G3, I still have the monitor, it's too cute =)
Then one day, my school's design studio brought in brand new G5's, I could've swore I drooled a bit.. *ahem*

Currently:
17" MacBookPro + MacPro Desktop (quad-core processor, 4GB memory, 500GB HD, NVIDIA 7300, 30" Cinema display)

I'm actually doing all my work on my notebook and i don't have any desktop at home and wanted to try something different for a change. I think i'm leaning towards the mini than the imac

might want to take it into the mac store and ask them about it. I remember there was a recall once about the palmrest area faded out.

This works on my iBook G4, but I'm not sure if the same method would work for the MacBook. You might want to try just a tiny, tiny area first to see if it scratches or anything like that.

Get the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, wet it a little bit with water, and just rub it over the dirty areas... lightly, no need to apply too much pressure.

Like I said, this worked perfectly fine with my computer, but I don't remember if the MacBook was glossy or not on the palmrests. If it is, you might not want to try the method I mentioned above. If it's matte, then yeah it'd probably work.

I'm so glad to finally see that there's a Mac user's group thread here on soompi!! *woot!*

I became a Mac user in June 2006. I currently have two mac computers, one as a laptop and the other as a desktop.

Laptop: White MacBook - 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo // 1 GB 667 MHZ DDR2 SDRAM of memory.
Desktop: iMac - 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo // 512 MB 0 MHZ RAM of memory.

@ j79 - I saw that you had some really great links posted on your first post. I have another website that you could add called, Cool OS X Apps: http://www.coolosxapps.net/ It's a fantastic website to download really cool Mac applications from.

Anyway, it's great to see mac users on here and it was nice meeting you all! biggrin.gif
