New York's Last 69 Dance Parade (Saturday May 19)
Civil liberties campaigners fighting to overturn New York's infamous anti-dancing
Cabaret Laws revealed that there are just 69 venues left where people can legally
dance in Manhattan this week, as well 79 restaurants, hotels and 'adult
entertainment' locations where dancing is technically legal.
"Three years ago, there were 300 cabaret licenses," dance activist Greg Miller told
the Metro News, ""Every three months the number drops by 15. It's so hard not only
to get a new cabaret license, but to get one renewed because of building codes," he
added.
City authorities recently refused to overturn the 1920s era laws criminalizing
dancing, prompting an organization called Country Dance to organize a march and
festival 'Dance Parade' to highlight the ruling. Revellers are being invited to join
the parade, which runs down 5th Avenue between 32nd Street and Washington Square
Park next Saturday afternoon (May 19).
"Dance Parade is New York's first ever parade and festival devoted to dancing. The
parade will celebrate everything from Breakdance to Ballet with 'Burning Man Spirit'
and ''Love Parade Energy'," Country Dance promise on their web site.
"We will join colourful floats, live bands and DJs to dance in the streets to
Salsa, Contra, Disco, Clogging, Ballroom, Japanese, Hip Hop, Swing, Tango, Ballet,
Breakdance, Japanese, Sufi, Samba and more - over 33 forms demonstrating that Dance
is truly an expressive form of art'."
