Edited by Wil^2: So my partner-in-crime Aziraphale and I noticed that there've been quite a number of job threads appearing lately, whether it's about summer jobs, wages, discounts or interview help and whatnot. Rather than making this forum look like a mess by closing everything, we decided to merge everything into one job topic.

So from now on, any questions/comments about jobs, wages, interviews, opportunities, unions, employee discounts, benefits and the like should be posted in this thread UNLESS:

If you're asking about a job opportunity specifically where you live, then you should post it in the the appropriate soompi network subforum first here: http://www.soompi.com/forums/index.php?showforum=44

Thanks smile.gif

Hey everyone~ I am currently looking for a part time job for the summer-- I'm 17 years old.

For those who have jobs already, can you please list where you work (specific would be best!), wages, what you basically do, your age (if possible).. etc? Thanks.. and I really appreciate it. smile.gif
sooperNOODLES!

anything but retail x_x
i work at abercrombie and get paid 5.50 and i work my butt of
perfecting that store.. definitely not worth it .. BUT it is fun and
you meet lots of new people :] thats the only thing thats keeping
me from quitting.. but i heard if you work in a coffee shop like
starbucks or cariobou you get good payy :]
xx_smilez
yeah, I was actually thinking about working at starbucks
imuhhater
How old do you have to be in order to work at Starbucks anyway?

I'm also looking for summer jobs (i'm 16 btw) but it's so hard! I've looked everywhere. sad.gif
Clu3less
i'm pretty sure you have to be 18 to work at starbucks. but i could be wrong

and wow sooperNOODLES! only 5.50?! is that the minimum wage where you live? the minimum wage over here is 6.75

i'm looking for a job too. i'm thinking something like tj maxx or marshalls since i know they're hiring.

That's what I thought for Starbucks also. Something like that you'd have to be 18+

The minimum wage in the state of WA is $7.63, so I'm pretty good once I find a job. Lol.
jayxd33
Starbucks is crappy pay. Only like $8.50/hour, but you get free drinks for you and your friends. Yes it's 18 to work there.
I'd wanna get a job, but I only turn 15 tomorrow. Probably babysitting. I wanna do tutoring, but I don't think I'll have time next year.
rukia
The minimum age for working at Starbucks is 16, not 18. I work at a Starbucks in NJ and I get paid $7.75 an hour, which is pretty decent pay if you're a teenager. Depending on your store manager, hours are pretty flexible. You get good benefits like a pound of coffee or a box of tea a week, and 30% off anything as long as you have your partner card/number.

Plus if you work during college, your SM may get in contact with the corporate Sbux office and fix you up an internship either in your area or in their main HQ in Seattle. It's a good job, I highly recommend it, plus they are in the Fortune top 100 companies to work for.

does $2o include tip? or is tip seperate?

i recently got a job as a waitress at a local japanese/korean resturant and i think they're paying minimum wage for waitresses ($2.63/hour) plus splitting tips with the 2/3 other waitresses.

but yeah for a job i usually recommend waitressing, esp at a korean or japanese resturant b/c their food is usually really expensive, which means tips are usually higher than other restuarants (i could be wrong). if you wnat to waitress, i dont recommend chinese restuarnts b/c i've done it before and they really stress quick dishes (wait like 10-15 min for the first dish to come out) and you have to do everything in a rush and tips are kind of bad b/c chiense food is kind of cheap.

oh yeah for waitressing you usually have to be at least 17 b/c u have to serve alchohal nd stuff

other than that i'd also look into retail stores taht you like b/c you can get huge discounts hahaha

How old are you? I'd so love to work at Starbucks. There's at least one on every freaking block whenever I go to downtown Seattle. It's amazing.

Right now I'm 18. I started working for Starbucks when I was 17, so the minimum age hire isn't 18, at least in NJ. But I can't say the same for other states, where it might be different. You should really call the nearest store just to make sure.
precious4e
Well i'm not a teenager anymore but when I was I worked at:

Doctor's Clinic as a receptionist
Summer Day Camp instructor

the only thing that's keeping me from quitting is the fact that my best friends work at the one i got hired in, my old high school friends work there too, and the coworkers are all fun and...some of them are hawwwt yo~~ harharhar. so in a summary, the teamspirit in my particular restaurant is awesome :].

KIM_SAYS:
I'd like to work at Starbucks. A guy I know could hook me up, but the only hours available...So effing early. Figures. I'd also like to get a job at the hospital doing patient transport since I already volunteer there, but you have to be 18.

Does anyone know about Barnes and Noble? I know it's not like the typical job that teens want, but I'd really like to work there.

me too...
I've worked there for about 6 months already.
the pay was pretty crappy during the 1st month -5.50 and hour
but it upped to $6 after 3 months..still pretty crappy
considering the place is only open from 4-7 ..so three hour days.

I'm 17..but I think you can work there when you're 15..+ or in high school.
Junpei
When I was younger like 16 or so i worked as a portrait artist, did painting like murals, then as an animator, and then in business and law.

the important thing is just to get your foot in the door, you might want to look into internships as well.
thesarahchong
I am in dire need of a summer job.
But I doubt anyone's willing to hire someone who hasn't even turned 16 yet.

Actually, the Starbucks in this area hires at 15 1/2 years old + working permit. Which reminds me, I need to get a hold of one..
JESS.
i wanna work as a pharmacy technician. but here in california i need to take the test for that.

I work at DQ/Orange Julius, I get paid $5.75, the only reason I'm not quitting is because I'm kinda attached, and plus i LOOOVE the girls i work with, they're AWESOME! biggrin.gif

lady_muimui

my friend is one of the lifeguard at the pool i go too. He's always feeling big since he's the lifeguard and his lifeguard jersey thingy looks the best. well, compare to the ones that my uncle are wearing. my uncles are lifeguard at the same pool.

Well, over the summer i'll be taking my courses to be a lifeguard, but i would have to wait til i turn 16 so i can take NLS. During the days that i don't have courses, i'll probably be working as a pool monitor. I'm not sure what's the wage you get since i still haven't send in my application yet. I'm still waiting for my SIN(social insurance card) to arrive so i can fill in the spaces i have left. To be a pool monitor you have to have your Standard First-Aid and CPR-C. I think you have to be at least 15 or something like that. It's a pretty easy job, you just sit there and if anyone needs help then you are there.
missavvy
im working as a cashier at a supermarket.. min wage $7.25

Hey this is totally off topic, but my english teacher used to teach in a highschool in Trenton lol.

But I work at a restaurant as a hostess for $7.45 an hour and get tip out every two weeks (about $20-$25) and i'm 18. They asked me if I wanted to serve because it's more money but I refused. unsure.gif

i get 2.13 as a waitress. became a waitress at 16 yrold. i can get up to 10 something an hour. pretty okay.
songielove
hey! Fast food is SO bad i discovered.. it's j/ the rush and stuff. But other than that-- it's not a bad start happy.gif . I'm @ Taco Bell! tongue.gif hehe. I only get minimum wage ($6.75 here) and i'm 16. But once i complete steps and tests, i get a $.25 raise. Not bad FOR NOW. But i am looking for a new job. i think i do a more-than-perfect job @ my place. I deserve better pay hehe.
saera
I tutored math/science and I got paid 20 dollars for 1.5 hours, but it's summer now, so no one needs math help -__-

I plan on taking private students for violin during the summer, 10 dollars for half an hour. A lot of kids actually make a ton of money off of private lessons. ph34r.gif

Currently, I'm under training/working at a nail salon/spa. She said I'd get ~100 dollars a day (9-10 hours) depending on how many customers I get, that's without tip. I don't get paid when I'm getting trained, and that's about two three weeks.

My friend works at Coldstone for 6.75 an hour + tip (which isn't much...). Another girl I know works at Jewel (grocery store), but after union dues and taxes, she only gets like 5.25 an hour.

Right now I'm a sophomore.

Yeah, and I need to make 5000 by the end of the summer. phew.gif Like that's going to fall from the sky. tears.gif
x___diamond_eye
I hope there isn't a thread about this already.
Sorry if there is.

Anyway, I was just wondering how your first jobs were (and what they were)?

I just got hired at Sbarro's Pizza today, and I'm really nervous/excited.
I start next Monday. biggrin.gif

Wish me luck!
YOURS2ENVY
good luck and congrats on your job.
i helped out at my friend's machine shop here as a first job.
