Hi guys,

I've closed all the job-related threads there are in this forum, so please make use of this thread to post all job-related topics. It can be anything from what your job is, career prospects in a particular field, salary negotiation, problems with co-workers, working overseas etc. Questions on volunteering should also go here.

If so, what type of business? Have you thought about location, having investors/partners, etc?

I figure I could open some type of restaurant or a real estate agency or even a financing firm.
Ideally it'd be a partnership as I don't see a need to do a sole proprietorship, but whatever happens happens. I'd want to flip houses or do a restaurant those would be #1 and #2, just have to come up with a solid plan.

hey there! that's a nice job you have there.

how'd you become an english teacher in China. Is it really necessary to be a native english speaker?

Yes you will be able to find a job with "just" a bachelor's degree in chemistry. My friend did so. He's doing lab work in Los Angeles right now. And my other friends always tell me that as long as you have a bachelor's degree, you have a better chance of landing a job anywhere (as opposed to those who don't), even if it's not in your field.

hi, i am in the IT industry, I am based in Malaysia and I thought of going to other countries to explore the opportunities there, but I have no idea how...(I know it would be easier if I am hired so that it solves my working visa. However, I have job search on the internet and most of the companies want to hire ppl with already existing working permits). Any advise? thanks!

you definitely deserve better than that! just today i was listening to the radio on the way to work and they were talking about how often rude customers throw things back into the faces of the people working in the drive-thru windows. i hope you never had to deal with that

i'll hopefully be starting up a company that does software solutions of major consulting firms. i have a partner who's well connected in the US, and it's just a matter of me getting a little bit more experience in the software industry. we have a couple of outside investors who are willing to fund us after they see the details of the business plan and product design, and possible vc funding after a version 1.0 release.

not sure how it'll come up, but i think im young enough to just give it a try. haha

there's few ways to approach this.

first, you could go to your desired country under a tourist visa. Let's say the U.S, since I know a lot about the immigration laws here. You should try to maximize your vacation stay. During this time, you could try to find work and ask that the company sponsor your H1-B visa. This requires a lot of money, I believe $10,000. Some companies will sponsor this fee, or most of the time the company will deduct this fee out of your paycheck. One things for sure, this is very risky, expensive, and not to mention, difficult. Many people use to do this but the H1-B quota gets filled so fast every year, and the fee is just so expensive.

second, would be to enter the country using a student visa. It's the same whether it's undergrad or graduate. After your studies, you get a 1-year grace period called an OPT status where you can obtain a social security number and find work. After the one year period, you'll need to go back to your country. If you would like to stay you need the H1-B sponsorship in the first solution.

third, and the BEST way is to find someone in the country and get married! Seriously, I think this is the best way.

This is just the U.S. All countries have different immigration policies, so it's best that you take a look at some of their laws and see what's best.

well, u won't get the whole story because it's long, so plz don't judge me. neways, i worked at a restaurant owned by a viet couple. i must admit, i made a FEW mistakes and often came late to work. yeah, i had faults, but so did they. they were completely unprofessional and jerks (much more to that but won't get into details atm), paying me less than they should have, etc.
nehow, after hating working with them for a month, i gave my two weeks notice last week. their only other server is my friend who can't work around the clock, so i decided to give them time to find someone. yesterday, i made a mistake (and honestly, i don't make mistakes often). he was pissed n told me if i don't come in tomorrow it's fine, so i said, "fine, i won't." i'm not gonna finish the last week either.
so technically, had i quit or was i fired? because on job applications, u have to answer if u were ever terminated from a job. i want a definite answer, but at the same time, things got too (VERY) personal for me to want to come back n talk to them.
papabear
As you already gave 2 weeks notice, I say you quit--but be ready to explain if you are asked.

So I might have an opportunity to work for Samsung in Seoul. However, I've heard that the Korean government hardly issues work visas for people with BS or an MS. Is this true? It sounds like a load of crap to me. It doesn't make any logical sense but then many things in this world don't make any sense. sad.gif Does anyone know if this is true? I've looked around on the Korean embassy website but didn't find anything. Thanks!

I do a work at home job. Basically, I just advertise for the company and each time someone submits a registration form with my ID, I get paid. Check out my profile if you want to see the opportunities. I don't know if it works internationally though. I'm in Canada.

Anyway, when searching online be careful, there are TONS of scams out there. Also, a lot of the jobs aren't actually jobs but manuals sent to your home that give you all the information you need in order to start your own business.

I work at a Bank right now. As a Resourcing Consultant/Coordinator.
It's like a nice office in hell. work never stops!!!! once you think ur done there's more!!!
Basically, it takes alot of patience, tolerance, and good memory, organization and effort to handle high volume work.

Right now, i'm screening resumes, scheduling interviews, writing up offer letters, and handling vendors/candidates at the same time... all this sounds easy, but once you know the whole process it's HELL. I walked into this job thinking it's a piece of cake just reading the description (what i listed above) but the hierarchy and the people you have to connect with in order to hire/schedule/talk to... is ridiculously stressful!!!!

that's Human Resources at a bank for you. but if you are talking about Retail, then that's worse!!! it's the lowest of lowest for bank jobs. and they don't get paid overtime either which they always end up staying late for during their work.

One thing good about working at a bank though is that the pay is good.... but for some roles that you have to do is just not worth th money.

Thanks for helping.

I know a lot of soon to be pharm reps. Probably one of the best things that they can tell you is working at a hospital. In clinic, in patient settings, etc. You'll learn the ins and outs of the industry and it'll give you a foot in the door. Some people have also chosen to be pharm assistants or techs to be able to say - "I know how this place works."

Also, if you work for the right hospital - they'll pay for part of your school. Kaiser here in California will pay 2000 a year for school, as long as it's a major that will help them in the future. They also give you a grant that allows you have "8 hours of work" on your time card to compensate for the hours you go to school - basically, get paid to go to school for 8 hours a week instead of work 40 hr week then school - you go to work 32hrs and school 8 but get paid for 40.

*********
I just stepped down from a pretty high up position to what's looking doomy and gloomy on the new job so I can go back to school. I have two weeks to decide - did I make a mistake?

Old Job: laptop, company card, pretty much my own hours, easy going bosses (note the word bosses: 15), considered boarder line management.

New Job: hours to go to school (basically part time now), not so nice boss, challenge (I like those though), closer to home, puts me back in with patients, department not so friendly.

**sigh** I have to go be an adult now and go to work

from what i see in this thread already... majority of ppl hate their jobs....
all i can say is find what you really love doing and do what makes you happy! otherwise life is lived short...

i know matter of fact that i love my job, and the opratunity it has presented for me. coming from a poor family living in a trailer park...
i now model full time. get to travel and see places i would normaly never get to see in my life time. and im very lucky and fourtunet to get work based off my looks and talents. this is not somthing for the slacker... from it may appear easy. please... in the 5months ive been doing this ive seen and experienced so much in this industry that many ppl will never see or know about. i dont plan on doing this job for ever, but i plan to take the oppratunities that present them selves with futre contacts to establish new work for my slef.

So every one Do what makes you HAPPY! life is SHORT! live it!

I am currently working as a curatorial research assistant at an art gallery. It's interesting and informative because I get to see everything through a different lens. I'm used to being the visual artist rather than working with assisting artists, so it's been fun! The best advice I can give is to network. Networking has brought me a lot of job offers that I wouldn't have received otherwise.

anyone made a career change?
Irysinon
I'm about to. The competition and demand in web design is huge, but the expectations are absurd. The irrelevant mix-up of using the term developer and designer together is asking for someone that can absorb tons of coding language knowledge in his head. I'm not one that can do that and therefore, I fail. Freelance is getting me nowhere and my skills are decent at best. I'm thinking of changing my path. The problem is that I don't know what I should change it to, since there's very little that interests me as a career.
questions987
Kinda - I'm taking a step down from my current job to go back to school and finish what I started.

I'm currently a hospital administrator for a large home health and hospice clinic for an HMO in California. I'm stepping down - part time administrator of a much smaller primary care/pediatrics clinic (less regulations, staff of 200 dwindles to 12) - basically one is it's own little world, the other is a small part of a bigger one. Both are still the same Hospital/HMO just different areas.

I'll actually eventually move onto the law department of the Hospital and work as a Lawyer for the company. So it's kinda a career change. I just have to get the law degree first.

why not just find a job that focuses on what you specialize in? im guessing you're more on the design side? there are plenty of companies out there looking for someone who simply want to make their site look sleek and sexy. hehe

However, with the competition being so fierce, it see seems lately that many people out on the market are willing to provide expertise in both the design and development sides. The only people who can seem to find "good" positions in either one or the other are those who are "exceptionally" good at what they do.

i don't know too many graphic designers who are also fully adept at software architecture, but i can say they'll give front end developers a run for their money. hehe... there's still a lot of positions for graphic designers out there. perhaps it's time to switch out of the internet industry though... since the new wave of hybrid developers mostly affect this industry.

Art business sometimes gets annoying. When it comes to publishing, and trying to freelance it seems like people try to take advantage of you, somewhat, when it comes to getting copyrights to your work. Any lawyers here can help me find out about legal matters for freelance artists?
