ack! if Midnight Sun is postponed when do you think it'll be published? 2010? 2011? Even though i'm sad that i've read the first 12 chapters and i anticipate for the rest but i'm willing to wait if SM uses the lengthened time to improve Midnight Sun so it won't turn out like BD (a let down). However the first 12 ch is sort of reassurance that it should be good considering it was a rough-ish draft.

Yeah, Midnight Sun could be like the comeback for her after the Breaking Dawn results.. I don't think it'd be as far as 2011 but I hope its either nearing the end of 09 or the beginning of 10, that much I think would be reasonable and.. handle-able for all of us.
c'tin tje
Nooooooooooooooo.....................
a bad bad news!!!
the end of 09 or the beginning of 10 is tooooo long.....TT
leek_riceball
dudeeeee..the end of 09..is like some of our first years in college ;__;
or the beginning of 010..>_____>; will we even be that absorbed as we are with edward now :/ <--that somehow is worded very weirdly
either way
those years
are ..a long wait ..
like maybe middle of 09 is fine, but that's probably asking for too much. heeeeeeey i wouldn't mind if edward got in his 'pissy' mode cause stephenie is pissy..he's still hot..makes him hotter, that feeling gives him flaws. ;D

I am so sad for Stephenie and at the same time so mad. In case anyone is interested here's a petition going on for Stephenie to continue with midnight sun

http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/savemid...tsun/index.html

This petition reads
QUOTE
After a recent leak on the internet Stephanie Meyer chose to indefinitely put on hold Midnight Sun. Regardless of the leak, there are many Twilight fans who would still go out and buy the book. The leak shouldn't be the cause of this book getting unfinished.
To the creator of this petition and to those who have already signed it..... I think you guys are utterly selfish.... and kind of dumb.

Stephenie Meyer already expressed her feelings of WHY she can't continue on writing Midnight Sun. The reason why she's choosing to not continue in trying to get this book published isn't because she's worried that the leak might cause Midnight Sun's sales to drop.

QUOTE
The novel was originally meant to be just a writing exercise for Meyer. And the author seemed a bit fed up with some Twilighters' obsessive, critical nature after the release of "Breaking Dawn."
And it's understandable that she's getting a bit fed up with what some of her fans have been saying. Lets try not to be selfish on top of that. Stephenie Meyer worked her butt off trying to get these novels out to us. With some people criticizing Breaking Dawn AND having this leak happen in just one month after the release of Breaking Dawn.... we should just give Stephenie a break.
DDuk
^I think a petition is heartless.
If anything, the fans should be writing letters of encouragement and support, not make a useless petition that is basically telling Stepheine to write the book.
I think that is just plain rude.

And it is true that some twilighters are O.C.D especially after Breaking Dawn was released.
I was really surprised to see people BASHING Stephenie Meyer. the person who created our beloved characters.
I mean its a story, and she is telling it, if you don't like it don't bash the author just put it down.

I also say that we should give Stephenie Meyer a break from the Twilight realm. She needs it.
vi4vi2002
I really want to read the draft. However, Stephenie Meyer said that she doesn't want us to read it until it is complete. So I will suck my sorrow up and wait for the book to be publish.
keirasketch
well I'm feel bad for her that it leaked WHILE she was writing.. but her pointing the finger at RPatz was like uhmmmm wtf
maybe Rob DID do it because he hates the character so much/hates how he has to eat a effing womb later but anyways..
with how SM was handling things after Breaking DOWN - haha - it almost seems like a payback to her fans that turned away because of how horrible the last book was. almost like 'you think my book sucked?! well how bout this you assholes, I will put an indefinite hold on Midnight Sun, haha!'

BTW I wasn't all THAT excited for MS like some other people, since I'm so Team Jacob lol but MS has a lot of potential to be good, if Edward isn't as angsty and self-loathing till it hurts as he was in the previous books. Iono, up until Eclipse the series was alright, even good, but BD just KILLED it for me alkdjhflaeuahlfekaha

okay I'm ready for people to kill me now.

Edit: oh and look on the bright side! The movie got moved up to Nov 21 thanks to HP being postponded (sulks)

Honestly I'm not really liking Edward compared to the first book...

I was reading through my friend's copy of Breaking Dawn and Edward's obsession over Bella is a bit overboard.
Like when she got pregant and he was calling it a 'thing' because he thought it was going to kill her and he wanted to get rid of it.

I'm not trying to bash Meyer or anything just that I read it and thought that the personalities were getting annoying.

I was never an avid fan of the series in the first place. Twilight IS a good series to read however I think because people are obsessed over it, I kinda lost interest in it.

About Midnight Sun, I'm curious if Edward's point of view will make us understand his thoughts and make us like him or dislike him. When it is to be released, I'll probably read it.

What was wrong with Breaking Dawn?
I just finished reading it & it was great!
Although I disliked how there were so many characters & couldn't remember them all.
btw does anyone know what AWOL stands for in Breaking Dawn? It was in Jacob's POV chapter...

And with Midnight Sun being leaked is a sad thing to happen. Damn those idiots who leaked it >o<
I'm debating whether to read the online draft or not..
rai mars
^AWOL 'means away without offical leave'. I personally was really disappointed with Breaking Dawn as the ending just bugged the sugar out of me. =/ I thought it was stupid how Bella got pregnant in the first place. There was no logic in it. This was because technically Rosalie should be able to get pregnant as well seeing as she had not gone through menopause yet. I also hated the way Bella was so prefect as a vempire. It was ridiculous as someone with such strength was able to withstand drinking human blood. I'm sorry to say that I seriously considered returning the book though I am however looking forward to Midnight Sun. Since I still love the first three novels.

she didn't point the fingure at Rob Patterson? I just re read the message and I didn't see his name anywhere on the msg. I'm confused.

^ Wth? She didn't point fingers at someone specific, did she? Her message showed that she probably was aware of which ever person she had given that specific copy to but she didn't mention names.

Bella was able to have Renesmee because she was still HUMAN. If you read correctly, humans+vampires are sometimes able to breed. Its called a succubus or an incubus - according to Stephanie. I say that because although some dictionaries or histories or whatever say that an incubus is a VAMPIRE who goes after human women, its actually a demon/vampire. And I don't believe Edward qualifies as the "demon" half so..

Yeah, and Rosalie couldn't have a child because technically her body is now stone and so she can't breed. Same for Emmett. But if they were to have a HUMAN lover, they could probably have a child.. (Only Emmett, that is).

But I do agree on the stupid Bella being so perfect in the end -roll eyes- Like, it really did seem like she got clues from a fanfiction. It just seemed TOO perfect. It wouldn't have hurt her to have let Bella have SOME normality, would it have? =/

i'm only on new mooon! i was slow at reading. *slaps self*
but then i LOVE the books. hehe

I dunno what people are complaining about I liked Breaking Dawn...and I really hope that she does complete Midnight Sun...especially after I read the rough draft...hold on...I didn't do it illegally...SM posted it on her website saying it was only fair for her loyal fans ...I only read it cuz I thought that it might never get published...anyways if you wanna read the first 12 chps she has it posted on her website...and really even though it was just a rough draft...I thought it was great.
~Manyh
for me it's really boring around 4 first chapters of MS. I couldn't mind if she
rewrite it. but it was really cute when he came back to fix her window with oil

Can you tell us where you found this information? I'm intrigued... Are you sure it was from a credible source?
spuddevaughn
I had read SM's response to the leak and although she did say that she has an idea where the leak happened because of her knowledge of the corrections she made to each copy that was sent out...I never had the impression that she was pointing a finger at anybody, much less at Rob. That's just insane people and do we really think Rob can do such a thing? I really doubt that.

I had read BD and contrary to what I had been reading in a lot of forum...I actually liked it but there were parts that were dragging and boring, but as a whole I really liked the book. The fact that it was a happily ever after ending didn't really bother me because we can never be sure if it is indeed a happily ever after for the Cullens...maybe for now it is and that's what's so great about endings and books...we never really know. Besides, why is it that when authors kill off important characters the fans complain...coughHarry Pottercough....and when the author gives us a happy ending still people complain. I guess you can never really please everyone.

I was pleasantly suprised that SM mentioned a Filipino vampire folktale. It was a welcome treat to read it in BD and Twilight.

Who the hell said Robert Patterison did it? RPATZ? sleep.gif " .. this is so confusing .But I have read the first twelve chapters of her book and i must say , i have noticed a few grammar errrors. Well she did say it's her rought draft. I dont think stephenie meyer would ever release the name(s) of the leaker, otherwise all twilight saga fans will drive that person insane.

Well i dont think we should be "disappointed " that the book is being held indefinitely because why would a writer leave her readers hanging for years to come ?It's most likely to be done in the next two-three years or so. It's either that or she wont write it at all . Perhaps this can also become stepheni meyer's best selling method. The long anticipation of the book, will encourage more people to purchase this novel. The Edward's verison of twilight has potential to become even more popular than the first book. The love and the way he moves in this book , is just amazing from reading the first twelve chapters. But then again i might have a vast imagination .

AT LEAST THERE'S SOME GOOD NEWS, TWILIGHT WILL BE RELEASED ON NOVEMBER 28 2008 .
znarfuol
LOVE THE SAGA.

however, i was quite disappointed on how the book wrapped up. I really wasn't sinking my teeth into breaking dawn.

but at least, Steph was able to finish it that way I expected...

Can't wait for the movie.

*tee-hee!

what the creeps? as if Robert Pattinson would sit by his scanner, and scan all the pages out of MS.
seriously. even i wouldn't do it.
BUT

regardless, i liked the story in MS. It was the most entertaining thing ever.
And now to have it all be wasted, is so tragic that if i was a vampire i would've probably gone on a hunt to find whoever leaked it.
mizz_ficka
i just read the first book,,gud book...and she seems like the next J.K Rowling...

can't wait to see the movie... sweatingbullets.gif
tknoodles
^as much as i love the twilight trilogy (yes. that's right, trilogy), stephenie's writing isn't really as good as Jk Rowling's. Also, the harry potter books are well, kinda better. but i'm getting off topic.
Drusilla
Too bad about the leak, it must really suck to see your work go everywhere like that, but IMO it's wrong to blame criticism of Breaking Dawn for Stephenie Meyer's decision to halt work on MS. Sure, she's the author and she works hard at getting these characters out there in books, but surely someone who's forked out their money deserves to express their opinion if they think the book wasn't good? (and a lot of the people who criticised BD were people who'd loved the first three books and found themselves disappointed with the last one). It's not a personal vendetta against the author, and if that's really got anything to do with why Stephenie Meyer's stopping work, then it's somewhat childish of her (in any case, it's stupid to blame readers for not 'getting' things about your book, or for not liking it. Praise is not a God-given right, lady, it has to be earned- as it was for your first three books ).

*waits to be flamed*

EDIT: tknoodles, I totally agree with you about Rowling. Also, Harry Potter has better jokes.
honeybeat44
i'm glad Stephenie is deciding to delay the book because honestly the first few pages of midnight sun were kind of dragging and like her writing and storyline's they've been a bit lacking like she could've done a lot better
belle_kd1413

Hope that SHE does do better.

tknoodles, i agree with ya, too. Steph just can't beat J.K. Rowling.

I do quite agree, I don't think Rob would be low enough to do that, no matter how much he hated his character. And, that's assuming he even has the time to sit by his scanner and scan those drafts.

Also, I honestly think that dragging out the anticipation would do worse for her actually. The Twilight hype wouldn't last that long, if she waits a few years or two years. Of course, we'll still love the Twilight Saga, and the books will always be part of a "bestselling" history, but just like all hypes it'll die down. Just like now, if JK Rowling were to come out with another Harry Potter book, they probably wouldn't be as hyped as books 1-7 were, right? Like the Tales of Beedle and Bard book that's coming out. The hype simply dies down after awhile, so if she really wanted to keep the hype and anticipation up, it would be good if she at least set an estimate of when she was planning to come out with the book again, or if she's not at all. Keeping everyone hanging isn't going to do her any good. :/
Skippin
Twilight was the best out of the 4 books.
Breaking Dawn kinda... ended blah...
I don't think Rob P. would actually leak Midnight Sun.
Like others have said why would he waste his time scanning the pages! mad.gif
First 12 chapters of Midnight Sun was.. good, I saw a few mistakes in it but it's still pretty good.
I hope SM continues to make Midnight Sun.. or work on something like it.

Stephenie updated her website with BD FAQ's.

http://www.stepheniemeyer.com/bd_faq.html

WTF. She still didn't address the chromosome question.
spuddevaughn
I had already read TW, NM, and BD and although I loved TW I have to say that unlike many of the fans...I really did like BD better. I don't know...I just love it especially the goodbye scene during the confrontation with the Volturi. It really made me cry...I swear.

I was at the Twilightmoms site and they had a topic there about their favorite Edward moments and I have to agree with what most of them said...every scene with Edward in it is a favorite moment...well...every time he is in the story is my favorite moment.
whf_violet
I actually enjoyed reading BD. New Moon was my least favorite among the four, I got so bored while reading the middle part of it (too much of Jacob) and its stressful waiting for Edward to resurface again. laugh.gif The draft of Midnight Sun was good too biggrin.gif
crosshealchild
i enjoyed reading breaking dawn, but i also made up my own little ending.
In my imaginary ending, Tanya died trying to save edward. hey at least she did it for love. But
then again, my ending is to ruthless......i like the peaceful version (meyers) ending better.

keirasketch
lol people chill out
I know this sounds retarded when I say this, but I honestly don't remember where exactly I read it, but it was on IMDB board.. somewhere there... but yea I KNOW she didn't say YEA ROBERT PATTINSON DID IT but seeing as how he did have a copy of MS it was kind of implied. maybe it's because people, including myself, are so fed up with SM they are thinking this but iono. edit: I apologize if what I wrote confused some of you. It's just what I read, and it's probably not too credible.

I never said RPatz DID leak it though lol as if he would

and also, yea uh like couple of weeks before I saw a link on SM's official site with a link for a PDF download for MS, so when did leak happened I was like wtF? is this different one from the one she uploaded for people to download??

BD was just disappointing for me, personally, and what made it worse was how SM was handling the situation saying stupid things like Rob Effect and 'LOLZ PEOPLE IT'S FICTION DUHHHH'... also how her publishers totally didn't care about the grammatical errors in the book was retarded. it's as if they are trying to milk money and book out of SM and not even care about the quality of the book.

questions987
BD wasn't her best piece of work, but was it bad? Heck no.

How can you have it end another way, if you think about it - who would you have willingly killed off if there was a fight. You knew it had to come down to the Volturi face off.

I think part of the disappointment is that Forks is gone with this story - it ends and it doesn't feel like we're ready for it to end. In all honesty, I'd like to find out what happens to Jacob and Nessie and see Bella and Edward again. She might go back to it someday, remember - she said that this is the last book from Bella's perspective because her story is complete, she has the man, immortality, and her kid. She's as happy as can be - but you can see the struggle still in the other characters.

Stephanie left and opening to continue the story and I truly hope she does. I think I feel completed with the Bella and Edward thing but I'd like to see Nessie and Jacob and the other Half Immortal. It's pretty apparent that it's going to be a struggle there. And then in BD's FAQ she mentions Embry's past, and how she doesn't want to answer the question because it might come back to haunt her someday. It'd be intresting to see how she developes the wolf pack more.

Stop harping on her for the way to the story ended, the book pretty much wrote itself if you think about it and I'm sure the publishers had something to do with forcing a 4th book out of her. It was good for what it was and she did a good job.

BREAKING DAWN FAQ
What does the cover mean?

Breaking Dawn's cover is a metaphor for Bella's progression throughout the entire saga. She began as the weakest (at least physically, when compared to vampires and werewolves) player on the board: the pawn. She ended as the strongest: the queen. In the end, it's Bella that brings about the win for the Cullens.

What does the title mean?

The title Breaking Dawn is a reference to the beginning of Bella's vampire life.

What does the Book I prologue refer to?

These are Bella's thoughts about Renesmee, during the time when her life was in serious danger from the pregnancy.

Why the big build-up for a fight that didn't happen?

I'm not the kind of person who writes a Hamlet ending. If the fight had happened, it would have ended with 90% of the combatants, Cullen and Volturi alike, destroyed. There was simply no other outcome once the fight got started, given the abilities and numbers of the opposing sides. Because I would never finish Bella's story on such a downer—Everybody dies!—I knew that the real battle would be mental. It was a game of maneuvering, with the champion winning not by destroying the other side, but by being able to walk away. This was another reason I liked the chess metaphor on the cover—it really fit the feel of that final game. I put a clue into the manuscript as well. Alice tore a page from The Merchant of Venice because the end of Breaking Dawn was going to be somewhat similar: bloodshed appears inevitable, doom approaches, and then the power is reversed and the game is won by some clever verbal strategies; no blood is shed, and the romantic pairings all have a happily ever after.

What was the other book besides Midsummer Night's Dream that you said influenced Breaking Dawn?

As noted above, it was The Merchant of Venice.

What happened to Marcus's wife?

Once upon a time, a fairly young vampire (he had only been a vampire for a decade and a half) named Aro changed his young sister Didyme, who had just reached adulthood, into a vampire in order to add her to his growing coven. Aro always wanted power, and because he himself had a potent mind-reading gift, he hoped his biological sister would also be gifted in a way that would help him rise in the vampire world. It turned out that Didyme did have a gift; she carried with her an aura of happiness that affected everyone who came near her. Though it wasn't exactly what he had hoped for, Aro pondered the best ways he could use this gift. Meanwhile, Aro's most trusted partner, Marcus, fell in love with Didyme. This was not unusual; given the way she made people feel, lots of people fell in love with Didyme. The difference was that this time, Didyme fell in love herself. The two of them were tremendously happy. So happy, in fact that, after a while, they no longer cared that much about Aro's plans for domination. After a few centuries, Didyme and Marcus discussed going their own way. Of course, Aro was well aware of their intentions. He was not happy about it, but he pretended to give his blessing. Then he waited for an opportunity to act, and when he knew he would never be found out, he murdered his sister. After all, Marcus's gift was much more useful to him than hers had been. This is not to say that Aro did not truly love his sister; it's just that a key part of his personality is the ability to destroy even what he loves in order to further his ambitions. Marcus never found out that Aro was responsible for Didyme's death. He became an empty man. Aro used Chelsea's gift to keep Marcus loyal to the Volturi, though not even Chelsea's gift could make Marcus show any enthusiasm for it.

How different is Breaking Dawn from Forever Dawn? What changed, what stayed the same, and why? Will you ever post extras from Forever Dawn?

The basic story is the same. Bella and Edward get married and go to Isle Esme for their honeymoon. Bella gets pregnant with Renesmee. The birth just about kills Bella, but Edward makes her a vampire in time. Jacob imprints on Renesmee. Alice has a vision of the Volturi coming to destroy the Cullens with the "immortal child" as their excuse. Alice bails. Bella's shielding abilities turn the tide in the Cullen's favor, along with Alice bringing home another half-vampire to prove that Nessie isn't a danger.

The things that are different:

Jacob and Bella are not nearly so close. None of the events of New Moon or Eclipse exist; Edward never leaves, so Bella and Jacob never bond. Jacob's feelings for Bella remain at crush level.
Due in part to Jacob being a smaller character, the werewolf pack is only sketchily developed. It exists as a whole, but there isn't much information about the individuals. Most of the wolves do not have names.
The entire story is written in Bella's perspective. Because of this, there is a lot more emphasis on the pregnancy phase.
Jacob isn't there at the delivery, naturally, so he imprints on Renesmee a few weeks later when Bella is visiting Charlie.
With no New Moon or Eclipse, Victoria and Laurent are both still alive. Laurent stays happily with Irina and sides with the Cullens in the confrontation with the Volturi. It is Victoria rather than Irina who informs on the Cullens to the Volturi. She creates a new friend, Riley, to make the actual accusation. She doesn't want Aro to know about her agenda—or the fact that the baby is only half-vampire, of which she is aware.
The wolves kill Victoria. She is the only casualty at the final confrontation.
The last chapter ends the same way, but there is an epilogue. It involves Max (J. Jenk's assistant). Bella's initial interaction with him is a little bit longer and, feeling she owes him a favor, she gives him her number and tells him she will help him out in return if he ever needs a favor of his own. Max gets himself into some trouble, and Bella gets to play Superman.
I may post some extras someday if I ever have time to go back through the Forever Dawn manuscript—it's just as long as Breaking Dawn. There are a couple of things that family members told me they particularly missed, so I would start there.

Why the name Renesmee?

Well, I couldn't call her Jennifer or Ashley. What do you name the most unique baby in the world? I looked through a lot of baby name websites. Eventually I realized that there was no human name that was going to work for me, so I surrendered to necessity and made up my own. I don't approve of such shenanigans in real life, I don't even believe in getting creative with spellings for real kids! But this was fantasy, and no human name fit, so I did the best I could. I named Renesmee so long ago—Fall 2003—that the name now sounds really natural to me. It wasn't until people started mentioning it that I remembered, "Oh, yeah, it is a weird name, isn't it?"

What's the deal with "shapeshifters"?

What is the definition of a werewolf? Is it a man who changes into a wolf? Or is it a man who, once infected by a werewolf bite, changes into a wolf during a full moon? If you go with the basic description, then the Quileutes are werewolves. It's not a distinction that really matters on a normal day. During the standoff with the Volturi (not a normal day), Edward sees that Caius is going to use the treaty with the werewolves as an excuse to attack. He's aware of the distinction between these wolves and the more traditional kind, and though it's only a technicality, he is able to us it to deflect the attack. Technically, the Volturi aren't at war with these wolves and Edward stresses the word "shapeshifter" in order to make the distinction clearer to the witnesses. The Quileutes weren't aware of the existence of a different species of werewolves, but Carlisle and Edward were. There was a hint about this at the end of Eclipse when Edward says to Victoria (referring to Seth), "Is he really so much like the monster James tracked across Siberia?"

What happened to Leah?

Leah is currently pretty satisfied with life. She's free from Sam's pack, which is a very happy thing for her. She's the "beta" in Jacob's pack, which she can't help but be a little smug about around her pack brothers (its kind of a big deal in wolf terms). Jacob has become the reliable friend that she's been needing for quite some time, and he's a real comfort to her, though they conceal their fondness for each other with constant bickering. She has absolutely no romantic interest in Jacob, and the whole Nessie thing only bothers her in that it ties her to the vampires.

What happened to Sam's father?

Sam's father disappeared when Sam was very young. He wasn't a great person, and the stress of providing for a family was too much for him, so he skipped out. This is one of the reasons that Sam is mature beyond his years. He picked up a lot of the slack.

Is Billy actually Ephraim?

No, Billy is not Ephraim. Billy is Ephraim's grandson.

Who is Embry's father?

I don't know who Embry's father is. I'm aware that this lack of knowledge is annoying to some people. I'm sorry that I haven't been able to explain myself in more detail—that's one of the drawbacks of interviews. You don't know what you will be asked, you don't have much time to come up with an answer, and if you give an answer that is too long, they cut it down into a form that doesn't make sense. So you have to think on your feet and speak in sound bites. I'm not great at either.

I'm going to try to explain what it means when I say that I don't know something, or that a character hasn't revealed some part of himself to me. Those statements are both shorthand answers for a long and complicated explanation that doesn't work for a sound bite or a stage presentation. No two people write the same way, so I don't know if this will make sense to anyone else.

When I write a story, I start out with infinite possibilities. As I describe any character or plot point, I make those characteristics finite. For example, once I decide Bella is a brunette, all of her blonde and redhead possibilities disappear. Once I decide Bella lives in Washington, all the other places she might have lived are gone. There's this huge universe of options that I slowly whittle down into a more focused reality. Until I need to know a certain fact about the character, all the possibilities stay open out there in that universe of possibilities. If I set something in concrete prematurely, it could be a stumbling block later, so I try to keep an open mind about details until they become necessary to the story. If I explore a character too early, that can lock me into a situation that might be difficult to work with later.

So, I haven't explored the three main options for Embry's father this deeply yet. Someday, if it becomes necessary to a story, I'll comb through each character, look at his history and his present, and see which option makes the most sense. I'll more fully sketch out the internal workings of Billy, Quil Sr., and Samuel Sr. and see whose character supports this backstory best. That's what I mean when I say that the characters haven't told me yet. I haven't dug into them deeply enough to see if this information rings true with who the character is.

Someday, if I continue with the Twilight universe, maybe it will become necessary for me to know who Embry's dad is. I'm not to that point, and I don't want to just give a glib, "Oh it's ___________" kind of answer, because I might regret it later.

Vampires and pregnancy: when did that idea occur to you? How does that work?

The first seed (no pun intended) was planted when I did Bella's computer research in chapter seven of Twilight. Bella reads about several real vampire legends—the Danag, Estrie, Upier, etc. In the novel, I only mentioned a few of the many legends I read through. One that I didn't mention at this point was the entry on the Incubus. The unique feature about that legend was that the incubus could father children. Hmmm, I said, and I filed that kernel of an idea away for later. When I decided to write the first sequel to Twilight (Forever Dawn), I knew it was going to revolve around a hybrid baby from the outset.

When my editor and I decided to go back and really develop Bella's last year of high school, I did so with the knowledge that it was all going to end up with the events in Breaking Dawn. Everything I wrote was pointed in that direction.

I was always very careful when I answered the "Can vampires have babies?" question, because I didn't want to say anything incorrect, but I also didn't want to make the future super-obvious. I focused my answers on the female half of the equation—female vampires cannot have children because their bodies no longer change in any aspect. There is no changing cycle to begin with, and their bodies couldn't expand to fit a growing child, either. I purposely evaded answering the question, "Can a male vampire get a human female pregnant?" to preserve a tiny bit of surprise in the last book. There were many statements on this subject purported to have come from me, but I never made those comments because, obviously, I knew where this was going.

Now, on to the "how is this possible?" question. First of all, of course it's not possible. None of this story is possible. It's a fantasy story about creatures that don't actually exist. Within the context of the fantasy, however, this is how it works:

Vampires are physically similar enough to their human origins to pass as humans under some circumstances (like cloudy days). There are many basic differences. They appear to have skin like ours, albeit very fair skin. The skin serves the same general purpose of protecting the body. However, the cells that make up their skin are not pliant like our cells, they are hard and reflective like crystal. A fluid similar to the venom in their mouths works as a lubricant between the cells, which makes movement possible (note: this fluid is very flammable). A fluid similar to the same venom lubricates their eyes so that their eyes can move easily in their sockets. (However, they don't produce tears because tears exist to protect the eye from damage, and nothing is going to be able to scratch a vampire's eye.) The lubricant-venom in the eyes and skin is not able to infect a human the way saliva-venom can. Similarly, throughout the vampire's body are many versions of venom-based fluids that retain a marked resemblance to the fluid that was replaced, and function in much the same way and toward the same purpose. Though there is no venom replacement that works precisely like blood, many of the functions of blood are carried on in some form. Also, the nervous system runs in a slightly different but heightened way. Some involuntary reactions, like breathing, continue (in that specific example because vampires use the scents in the air much more than we do, rather than out of a need for oxygen). Other involuntary reactions, like blinking, don't exist because there is no purpose for them. The normal reactions of arousal are still present in vampires, made possible by venom-related fluids that cause tissues to react similarly as they do to an influx of blood. Like with vampire skin—which looks similar to human skin and has the same basic function—fluids closely related to seminal fluids still exist in male vampires, which carry genetic information and are capable of bonding with a human ovum. This was not a known fact in the vampire world (outside of Joham's personal experimenting) before Nessie, because it's nearly impossible for a vampire to be that near a human and not kill her.

I didn't get into all of these details at my signings because it's a long, complicated mouthful. Also, it's hard to be clearly heard with all the screaming. Mostly, though, I waited to do this in writing because I have an immature, Homer Simpson-like tendency to giggle when I say the words "seminal fluids" in public.

Why did you decide to end the saga?

The Twilight Saga is really Bella's story, and this was the natural place for her story to wind up. She overcame the major obstacles in her path and fought her way to the place she wanted to be. I suppose I could try to prolong her story unnaturally, but it wouldn't be interesting enough to keep me writing. Stories need conflict, and the conflicts that are Bella-centric are resolved.

How do you feel about the Breaking Dawn controversy?

It makes me sad, of course, but I was expecting it. The negative was more than I was braced for, but that was because the book sold a lot more copies than I expected. It was bigger than I thought it would be on both the positive and the negative sides.

It's inevitable that the bigger your audience gets, the bigger the group who doesn't like what they're reading will be. Because no book is a good book for everyone. Every individual has their own personal taste and experience, and that's why there are such a great variety of books on the shelves. There are lots of very popular books that I don't enjoy at all. Conversely, there are books that I adore that no one else seems to care about. The surprise to me is that so many people do like my books. I wrote them for a very specific audience of one, and so there was no guarantee that any other person on the planet besides me would enjoy them.

When I publish a book, I know that it's not going to be right for every person who picks it up. With Breaking Dawn, the expectation was so huge and so intense that I knew the negative reaction was going to be especially bad this time. In the end, it's just a book. No book—or album, or movie, or tv show, or any other kind of entertainment—can answer to that level of expectation. Oh, it might do it for some people, it might be exactly what they were looking for. But there's always going to be another group who was looking for something else.

It's a hard thing to have people unhappy with you, but there's nothing I can do. Either Breaking Dawn entertains you or it doesn't. If I could go back in time, knowing everything I know right now, and write the whole series again, I would write exactly the same story. (The writing would be better, though—practice makes perfect.) This is the story I wanted to write, and I love Breaking Dawn. It's everything I wanted in the last novel of my saga. People's reactions don't change that.

I've heard you say that you think Breaking Dawn should be two movies. Why? Also, that it might be impossible to film. What does that mean?

If Breaking Dawn were ever made into a movie, it's hard to imagine it fitting into ninety minutes. The book is just so long! I can't imagine how to distill it—if I could, the book would be shorter. But maybe a screenwriter can see a way to do it and still cover the crucial plot points.

When I said that Breaking Dawn might be impossible to film, it's because of Renesmee. You can do almost anything with CGI these days—realistic dragons and dinosaurs and endless amounts of nonexistent creatures that blend right in with the real elements. Some of them look so real you forget they're not. However, the one thing that I've never seen is a CGI human being who truly looks real. An actress can't play Renesmee, at least not when she's a few days old; she's the size of a baby, but her expressions are totally controlled and aware. She would have to be a construct, and CGI isn't quite there yet. Of course, they develop amazing new technologies everyday, and we've got a little time left.

Is Bella an anti-feminist heroine?

When I hear or read theories about Bella being an anti-feminist character, those theories are usually predicated on her choices. In the beginning, she chooses romantic love over everything else. Eventually, she chooses to marry at an early age and then chooses to keep an unexpected and dangerous baby. I never meant for her fictional choices to be a model for anyone else's real life choices. She is a character in a story, nothing more or less. On top of that, this is not even realistic fiction, it's a fantasy with vampires and werewolves, so no one could ever make her exact choices. Bella chooses things differently than how I would do it if I were in her shoes, because she is a very different type of person than I am. Also, she's in a situation that none of us has ever been in, because she lives in a fantasy world. But do her choices make her a negative example of empowerment? For myself personally, I don't think so.

In my own opinion (key word), the foundation of feminism is this: being able to choose. The core of anti-feminism is, conversely, telling a woman she can't do something solely because she's a woman—taking any choice away from her specifically because of her gender. "You can't be an astronaut, because you're a woman. You can't be president because you're a woman. You can't run a company because you're a woman." All of those oppressive "can't"s.

One of the weird things about modern feminism is that some feminists seem to be putting their own limits on women's choices. That feels backward to me. It's as if you can't choose a family on your own terms and still be considered a strong woman. How is that empowering? Are there rules about if, when, and how we love or marry and if, when, and how we have kids? Are there jobs we can and can't have in order to be a "real" feminist? To me, those limitations seem anti-feminist in basic principle.

Do I think eighteen is a good age at which to get married?
Personally—as in, for the person I was at eighteen—no.
However, Bella is constrained by fantastic circumstances that I never had to deal with. The person she loves is physically seventeen, and he's not going to change. If she and he are going to be on a healthy relationship footing, she can't age too far beyond him. Also, marriage is really an insignificant commitment compared to giving up your mortality, so it's funny to me that some people are hung up on one and not the other. Is eighteen too young to give up your mortality? For me, any age is too young for that. For Bella, it was what she really wanted for her life, and it wasn't a phase she was going to grow out of. So I don't have issues with her choice. She's a strong person who goes after what she wants with persistence and determination.

What are you going to do next? Will you continue with the Twilight universe?

I think I need a break from vampires. At this exact point in time, I don't feel like I will go back to Forks.
However, I also don't feel comfortable with telling people what I had planned for further novels. Maybe part of me is protecting those secrets because I'm not ready to leave my vampires behind. Or maybe it's just habit from five years of compulsory secrecy. I'm sure it will be a while before I figure out which one is the real reason. Things will probably be clearer after I've been away from the stories for a while.

I really enjoyed working on The Host, doing something totally different, and I'd like to have that experience again of starting a new world from scratch. I have several other stories that I've been waiting to work on. At this moment, I'm torn between two, but I'm planning to commit to one of them very soon.

Stop harping on her for the way to the story ended, the book pretty much wrote itself if you think about it and I'm sure the publishers had something to do with forcing a 4th book out of her. It was good for what it was and she did a good job.

With SM writing and publishing The Host and doing all sorts of promotional events (like that concert tour or whatver) I don't know if you can blame the publishers for "forcing a 4th book out of her." I'm sure they wanted her to come up with a new book ASAP, but she could have maybe put off her other projects till later to focus on her current projects. Face it, the women's trying to stay on the surface of media by doing all sorts of things. If she had a deadline and didn't have enough time to write a quality novel, it's her fault.

And people are just upset with the book because it went against a lot of things she wrote in the previous three books. Also the relationship between Bella and Edward was so different from what the readers have seen in the past, it was shocking (how nothing came in between Bella and Edward before.. not even her family). Renesmee thing was a classic deus ex machina and Bella srsly lost nothing but her cravings for normal food and her eye colors.

From what I've heard, SM wasn't planning on writing the stories in NM and Eclipse, and she already had the ending thought out when she wrote Twilight. I just think it was kind of irresponsible as an author to abandon a story she has nurtured and let grow just so she can stick with the original ending, which explains how some of the stuff that happenes in BD seems really random.

And true, I would rather have Jacob get killed during the battle with the Volturi and be a hero (teaaaaaaaam Jacob!) and how no one died thanks to Bella's awesome skills was rather too perfect and annoying, it's not fair for people to compare the HP series with this one. The writing style between the two authors are completely different (although I do favor one over the other).

Ok, so I'm 2/3 of the way finished with Eclipse. I'd heard a lot of good and a lot of bad about this series before I started, but I wanted to give them a try. Unfortunately, I don't like them very much but I continue to read them out of boredom at work (I found the free files online. I would get it from a library but, well, I don't know any libraries in Seoul and how big their English selection would be).

Doesn't it bug anyone else how perfect Edward is? Before I read the series, everyone was always gushing over how amazing he is. I expected this really fascinating character but instead, I got a handsome, brooding, protective, and selfless character. There doesn't appear to be any actual flaws with him, other than that he is too protective sometimes. The way Meyer throws around the word "perfect" when describing him annoys the hell out of me. Ok, we get it, he's perfectly gorgeous, perfectly smart, perfectly polite, perfectly in love.

A lot of people had whined about Jacob Black's character, as well, but I actually found HIM to be the most interesting in the series. And if I were the chick who had to choose between a blandly perfect vampire or a rebellious, sarcastic werewolf, I'd choose the latter any day.

And onto Bella...geez, I don't even know where to start. I didn't like the way Meyer wrote this character, to put it nicely. She's clumsy, we get it. Edward is perfect and Bella is clumsy. The constant reiteration is Meyer's way of pointing out, "See! Look how quirky and strange she is that she keeps falling and always has to go to the hospital!!" It also just serves as a ploy to show how gentlemanly Edward is. Bella is a standard damsel in distress and is lacking some characteristics that round her out and make her a truly interesting protagonist. She thinks she's plain but yet every man she meet falls desperately in love with her. She falls a lot but is "charmingly" stubborn, so guys have to constantly rescue her. She is quite willing to throw away her mom (who she treats with an annoying patronization) and her father (who is given a flat, undeveloped personality from Meyer) for her boyfriend of 2 years.

But I guess the thing that really bugged me about the series (so far) is how it seems to rehash the same ideas over and over again. Every time Bella and Edward start talking, I feel like I've read this conversation before. The mental image of a boy and a girl on the phone, giggling and going, "No YOU hang up first!" or "Nuh-UH, I love YOU more!" comes instantly to mind. There relationship begins when he thinks she smells irresistible and she thinks he looks like a Greek god. Gee, that's great. Within the first few months, they're spouting out their undying love for each other. It's not that it's unrealistic (because I've read some unrealistic stuff that has been great), it's that it's unrealistic AND poorly developed.

Anyway, I'm crawling through Eclipse. Twilight I finished fast enough, and same with New Moon. But Eclipse has just been...meh.

Actually, when I read the first three books of Twilight Saga I noticed how perfect Edward seemed and it bothered me a bit. I mean, it would be better if she showed at least one flaw in him.

I haven't read Breaking Dawn, but I thought his character got fleshed out a lot in New Moon and Eclipse. I do have a soft spot for sarcastic, rebellious, and laid-back guys, though. Perfection doesn't excite me much at all, nor does Edward's constant, "Bella, I must always look after you because you're too weak, silly, and human to do it yourself" attitude. I know that he claims she's his world, but he treats her like a kid and she just laps it up. It's like she'll never be his equal--she always looks up to him and is just "dazzled" by his beauty, goodness, and intelligence. A relationship should be founded on equality, not one person holding all the cards and the other being blinded by appearances.

I FINALLY read the Twlight series after years of delaying it. hehehe
& I fell in love with it.
I regret not reading it sooner
but then I'm also glad that I read it now for it would have drove me crazy waiting for the books to come out
the week of waiting for breaking dawn nearly drove me crazy..

I loved Twlight the most because of..... EDWARD<3
he is literally the perfect guy (*drools*)

Anyways, I don't think Stephanie Meyer is one of the good writers...
her writing style is different for all the books (is it only me?)

One thing I don't like about the twilight series is that the fact that it's hard to pick up other books...
they don't seem interesting enough....hehe
~Manyh
I think SM lost the sparkle or the magic between the books when she wrote breaking dawn.
I didn't feel bond on it like I did with the first 3 book. It wasn't like "I have to know what's going to happen next" maybe because I read the spoilers and let myself get spoiled. but anyway her writing skills is different than anyone else. Compared to HP she has decided to write in two different perspective of BD and then ended with a classic happy ending

well edward is definately seen as perfect .. but thats only because its from bellas point of view. in midnight sun, hes actually not perfect at all. he has so many flaws, its just not described because we`re only reading from bellas point of view. he seriously has i-hate-myself-i-wanna-die issues. hes just suprised and taken back when bella tells him how wonderful he is. he doesnt even know he dazzles people LOL. edward definately has a lot of problems with himself and he just hates his life .. until bella shows up. i thought edward had a lot of flaws in the first 12 chapters of midnight sun. i guess its just the way bella and the audience sees it through our eyes, but i dont mind him being perfect. he really does sound gorgeous lol =)

I'm sure he does have some for of self-hatred, but that barely peeks through in the first three books. All we see is marble chest, marble chest, marble chest, liquid topaz eyes, liquid topaz eyes, Greek god, Greek god, Greek god. It really weirds me out that so many women and girls have pinned him as the perfect male, since...he does not resemble anyone real at all. He's so unrealistic (not just being a vampire--I read some fantasy and have heard much stranger) and because of that, I can't feel sorry for him at all. He's quite apathetic for me--just an empty, hot, well-mannered bloodsucker.

yeah it barely peeks through in the first three books which annoyed me just a bit. it was all too much from bellas pov .. i wanted to more of other character's point of view, it would have been much interesting. yes those descriptions were all repeated numerous times, but i guess girls love the way he's described lol. he doesnt resemble anyone realistic at all which is why girls have pinned him as the perfect male haha just pure fantasy. girls are just being girls .. falling for this unrealistic vampire which will never exist, unfortunately.

But Eclipse has just been...meh.

i wish you the best for breakin dawn then... lol

i do agree with all that you have said, i almost quit twilight because it was so redundant, but some how there was still this tinge of hope that kept me reading. i honestly thought this whole saga could have ended in a better way, Bella always got it too easy.

i'm still a fan for the saga, but not as crazy no more after completing it sad.gif
