It's actually quite "surprising" to us when a non-asian person takes an interest in asian music. That's because it doesn't happen too often

. I guess alot of asians tend to react to it in different ways? I personally don't mind... it's always a good thing when someone is taking an interest in our culture

!
**edit : Btw, I'm sure asian artists would be extremely happy if they find out that a non-asian person likes their music

not trying to feel sorry for myself.. lol, but i would just like to hear your oppinions on
this... as well as other american asian music fans. thanks for those of you who took the time to read this

I think that's the problem with music. Music is made for
people to listen to.
Sometimes when a artist get a broader audience/a bigger fanbase; people get very fickle (which is understandable), they get envy, or jealous. Its just somethign that comes with the territory.

I'm one of those!
I'm a black american
and I love Se7en, Rain, Kat-tun,V6, KinkiKids, Wheesung etc
I am a fan of asian music and other entertainmene
although I like american music first and always
I have a huge appreciation for asian music
but I have been treated rudly as if I don't count
especially when it comes to K-pop music.
Se7en and Rain are my two favorite artists in asia
and in the world, I have all of there albums and stuff
while I have met many kind people who do understand my appreciation
I've also ran into people who say the "Asian for asian and non asian's opinions don't count" garbage
Not sure if u know but I was at Bi's NYC concert and he chose a caucasian girl for the "Quiz" performance and so many people went crazy over that, "he only picked her cause she's white and blah blah" as if us non asian fans don't count. I was offended by that.
but ignore them
and just do your thing
as long as you know u are a dedicated fan that's all that matters
I wish people would get understand music is a universal language. I won't lie, when I went to see TI there were so many asian girls in line to see hiim and I was surprised, but I was happy about it and I would never say "They need to listen to there own music" I encourage stuff like that

I think we get too much flack for liking Asian music. I'm a Black Hispanic girl who LOVES her Jrock along with Korean artists like Seo Taiji and Clazziquai. I would love to talk about my favorite bands and such, but I can't stand getting the weird looks and the "Asian wannabe" comments.

i agree that music is suppose to be the universal language.. does not matter where you are or who you are, if you listen to music and appreciate it by itself, that i think is enough.. music is about appreciation right??
also i don't think it's fair to say that asian is for asian thing, because western artists promote their music also in asian countries right?? and asians aprreciate, and love theri music as well.. so i think all of that is crap..
i'm asian, but still i don't know how to speak korean or chinese, but does not mean i can't love their songs.. i'm a big fan of Kpop esp those drama OSTs and also totally love S.H.E... i'm one of their loyal fans, that's what matters.

I think you should re-word it as..."Non-Asian Fans of Asian Music" or somethiong along those lines because I'm American, but Asian, too lol. Anyway, that's not the point...
I think it's awesome when non-Asians are into "our" music because I love hearing their opinions.
For "us," it's basically the same but when Caucasians/African Americans, etc. get into our music, it's like, "Whoa...Our music must be really good!" The thing about Asian music, is that if you're a non-Asian who listens to Asian music, you're automatically labeled as a "wannabe" or "nerd." That's why so many people are close-minded about becoming fans of kpop/jpop/cantopop/mandopop stars.
It really ticks me off because how come Asians can listen to any type of music and it'll be fine, but once others enjoy our music they're nerds/wannabes? I listen to American artists still, does that make me a white/black wannabe? It's just music, and people should be free to listen to what they enjoy without getting labelled. Haha...I should stop before this turns political lol.

I honestly don't get why people get so hostile when to comes to things like that.
Like others said, music is universal. No one type is meant for just one group of people.
I'm a white girl who listens to more Asian music than American or European... It's just what happens to spark my interest. Luckily no one in person has given me crap about it (some of my Asian friends are like "Wow, you're more Asian than I am!" as a joke, hah hah) and one Korean girl I know was shocked when she found out I listen to Korean music. She was like "My mom would love you!"
But on the internet I've seen tons of people who just... don't like it.
I mean, I'm willing to bet that most of these Asians artists would be thrilled to see they have fans of different ethnicities from different countries...
I could totally understand if you'd be surprised to see a non-Asian listening to Asian music... But to say "Asian for Asian"? I don't even know what to call that...
I just ignore people like that. Or tell them off.

i get suprised. cause like i don't think a lot of the other races i guess are open minded to asian music. cause a lot of my friends look through my ipod and all they see is like korean music and maybe one of the titles would seem familiar and i would be like nope it's a remake, it's a korean song. they would be like

wtf. but i think it's AWESOME if foreigners like korean music. or just asian music in general. at hollywood bowl i saw A LOT of different races in the audienced and i absolutley loved it. you know spread the awesome music around the world.
you're opened minded a lot of my friends would never even think about trying to listen to korean or any other asian music and would be like it's totally over my limits and im not listening to it. i adore people like you who have an open mind. it's refreshing. and for the person who said asian for asian

does that mean we can't listen to american music? --;; people are ignorant and don't let those comments get to you. you have individuality which is totally awesome.
soooo ahaha all in all i LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE it when differenct races like korean or any asian music. i think it's SOOO awesome and beautiful. 8]

there have always been a lot of non-Asian music or k-ent fans at soompi--that's why the forum was started in the first place--to share with everyone and anyone who may be interested, no matter where they may be from.
and yes, I think most groups (Korean or otherwise)
would think it's cool that they have non-Korean or non Asian fans-- I know DBSK are fascinated by international ones--they tell us that all the time, but are still honestly suprised by the location of some of their fans.
In the 9 years I've been interested in Korean music/culture (plus)--I've never run into anyone whose been nasty online or to my face about me liking 'Asian' music--but if I did I just ignore their sorry selves.

Sometimes it becomes surprising for asians, when non-asian people say they are huge fans of asian music (lol i think i used the word 'asian' too much *head spins*). Maybe because of the fact that there have been quite a number of asian singers who have tried to make a breakthrough in the western world, but ended up not being successful. So it kinda leads to thinking that western people dont like asian music.
I know that maybe kinda lame...but that's just my theory. However, for me it doesnt matter. I have friends who like jrock/jpop/kpop even though they're not asians so Im used to it. Actually Im happy about it, because they appreciate music, no matter what language it is

First off, KOREAN MUSIC AND OTHER ASIAN MUSIC IS GOOD!!!/ADDICTIVE!! IT DOESN'T SURPRISE ME, BECAUSE ONCE THEY'RE INTRODUCED TO THE MUSIC, THE QUALITY, VOCALS, ETC THEY CAN'T SIMPLY STOP. ANYWAYS, THE MUSIC ARE AT AMERICA'S LEVEL-VOCAL WISE, QUALITY-WISE, DANCE-WISE, ETC., ...IT'S A BUMMER THAT AMERICAN MUSIC BECOME INTERNATIONALLY KNOWN AND OTHER MUSIC DOESN'T...EVEN WHEN IT'S REALLY REALLY GOOD!!!

Ok. I basically am going to say what everyone else said. So what? I'm not Asian! I'm 100% Caucasian. People have called me a wannabe, nerd, and weird for liking Asian music. I just shrug it off. I LIKE IT, not THEM so I really don't care what they have to say. If they wanna make fun of me, go ahead. Besides, Asian music is way better than American music. Asian music isn't as vulgar or rude. There isn't a cuss word every second like most American music.
Now, don't get me wrong, I listen to American music too, but my preference is definitely Asian music.

im white but i listen to asian music more than american music. i think it started when my best friend (she's chinese) introduced me to jay chou. i dont really know why, but i just liked it better. im a huge fan of the pillows and jay chou, and i love the songs from big bang, hyori, namie amuro, SS501, se7en, etc xD
so far, i havent gotten much crap for being "a poser" but i still feel a little of it...i dont think it really matters. i listen to what i like. personally, i think its better, more original, more fun to listen to, and has better lyrics (at least the translations...) than most american music. especially vocals and beats.

Yeah like some of the people who've replied here, i'm caucasian and I love Asian music of all kinds. I get laughed at alot for it by my friends and my mom (who are white just to say), which I think is really stupid.. why can't I like the music I like? I don't see anything wrong with it at all. I've never actually come across any Asian people who i've told of my love for asian music [[since there is like no asian people in my town except a few, but most are older (like 40s range) or younger (like little kid range) than me, and i'm not friends with them]] so I really don't know what any of their reactions would be towards this but yeah.
Anyways I think people should be allowed to listen to whatever music they like, doesn't matter if they don't understand the language, or aren't (using Korean music as an example) Korean or even Asian themselves. Music is something everyone can enjoy, whether the language it's sung in be English, Korean, Japanese, or any other language of the world really. People need to stop being so close-minded thinking that only Asians can listen to Asian music. It's ridiculous in my opinion, that if you're not Asian and you listen to a certain Asian languaged music [or all different Asian languaged musics], you're automatically a "wannabe asian". Being interested in the cultures, languages and music/entertainment of another country does not mean you "wish you were [insert race/ethnic group". I don't know. Glad to see soompi-ers are so open minded here

I get the same B.S but the funny thing is no one will really tell it to my face w/ the whole "WTF your not asian why listen to asian music thing?" cause I sorta scare ppl..LOL
Anyways but I have dealt with the same. I'm Samoan American I have like 1/8th Chinese in me .n. that's it but ppl just catagory me as Samoan, which is fine w/ me, but when I listen to Asian music ( I love Korean, Chinese, Taiwanese .n. Japanese music) I get the "WTF?" look from my friends when they find out.
I'm a big fan of Korean Entertainment (that's why I'm here in Soompi) but I also love Chinese, Taiwanese .n. Japanese artists as well.
My family be giving me the B.S all the time. They think I'm weird because I find interest .n. entertainment in watching/listening to asian shows/music. My older sister even asked me if I wish I was Full Chinese. I was like "No I'm happy .n. thankful to being Samoan but I enjoy the asian music .n. entertainment" since then she thinks it's cool that I"m so open to different cultures .n. music.
When my friends found out they though it was weird but there totally cool with it.
I usually get B.S from Asian ppl, I was sitting next to my korean friend when she started surfing the net on info about Big Bang .n. I started talking about how I like there music .n. we were sitting w/ other korean peeps they looked up when they overheard me talking about Big Bang .n. they just gave me "the look"
I just get annoyed when ppl give you "the look" or they tell you "your not asian, asian music is for asian", to does close-minded ppl it just shows how sad they are.
My korean friend is actually cool that I love Korean Entertainment cause now she has someone to talk to about the latest buzz, but then again I'm more into Korean music .n. drama then she is...lol
Anyways just don't sweat the close-minded fools just keep doin' your thang. Keep listening to what you like.

Does that mean we're a wannabe caucasian? Of course not!
I find it really cool that people of all races listen to asian music because as people have said.. Music is a universal language.

It's totally fine. I'm American (ethnicity: Asian, however) and I usually have no idea what the singers' are saying in their songs. The songs just sound very nice and since today's American music pretty much sucks, we turn to Asian music.
A caucasian listening to Asian music is just like an Asian listening to music by a caucasian. Eh, well.. maybe not...

Why does it matter if it's universal or not, if the person doesn't truly understand it? I find that a bit offensive, like they can listen to our music but we're not allowed to listen to theirs? I'm sorry if I'm overreacting but since coming on Soompi, I've become a lot more defensive because of some of the posts on here.
Anyway, I'm white and listen to it and yeah people think I'm weird, and a wannabe, and I get made fun of a lot for it from my family and just random people in general, and it pisses me off a lot of the time, but I eventually just try to forget about it because I can't help what I like. and would rather be made fun of then pretend to like the same stuff that everybody else does. Now, I kinda just hide it from people that I'm not close with. It's a lot easier that way. The only time I really bring it up, is if I see someone else listening to some artist or whatever.
Of course there are some cool people too that actually think it's interesting that I like something they're not familar with. I've introduced a lot of people too it just because they're curious about it. A lot of times, I tell them it sounds just like the music here in the states but they can't really imagine it. And then they're pleasently surprised with it.
Also, I'm surprised with the responses i see here. A lot are nice and understanding but then i think about the thread in general discussion about "What you think about people being interested in your culture" and a lot of people said, they thought it was ok to an extent or just plain weird. and what was even worse was some people who said "It's ok if asians like it but I think it's weird when Non-Asians get into asian culture". So I find this thread interesting...

well, i consider myself even rarer(if that is even a word),than Caucasian fans, because i am,in fact, hispanic american. And my friends do think that i'm a very odd person for liking Korean music, but i just find Korean music more appealing than american or latin american music.I still listen to other music though, but my music of choice is Korean, namely DBSK!!!!!!!!!!!
I just wish i had some Korean friends that i could talk about dbsk with, but there's only Filipino people at my school, and they seem too rich for me to hang out with.♥♥ i_heart_jaejoong ♥♥
