Im trying to find a good sci-fi/fantasy book, that is similiar to a Final Fantasy game. Like, someone goes on an adventure to win his lover over/save the world, and fights monsters on the way, or what not, and fights the boss at the end. you know, something that has a good story like a good RPG game, or like a Final Fantasy game. help me out!

Star Wars! The Thrawn Trilogy by Timothy Zahn... which consists of Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, and The Last Command. That is, if you're into Star Wars at all. The trilogy is very Star Wars-esque, like it could have been continued from George Lucas's Return of the Jedi. They're some of the best EU books written, IMO.

Arson Scott Card's Ender series. It gets a little confusing at times because it's extremely intricate.
It's really good though! I highly reccommend it.

hm.. that sounds like a lot of books i read.
lord of the rings? lol i dont' know.. they sorta blend in after a while. It's hard to find one that's not in a series.

Hawksong by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes??
It is a romance lol.
The other parts of the mini-series (The Kiesha'ra Series) are good... and the stories interlap.

That site has the books' summaries if you click on the titles.

the darkangel trilogy is a MUST READ it's so good. but it's slightly girly in that the main character is a girl. it sort of has a howl's moving castle feeling but darker

I found the series "The Dalemark Quartet" by Dianna Wynne Jones was pretty good.

You could try Star Dust by Neil Gaiman or Golden Compass by Philip Pullman. Golden Compass doesn't have a final fantasy type of storyline, but it does have the whole "i have to save my friend and possibly the universe" scenario. Sabriel by Garth Nix is okay. It's about a girl who takes over her father's position as a necromancer to save her father and the Old Kingdom. On her journey, she encounters danger, terror, love, and all that.

Books by Anne McCaffrey are okay. It's about dragon riders who fight against unknown forces.

Star Wars! The Hand of Thrawn Trilogy by Timothy Zahn... which consists of Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, and The Last Command. That is, if you're into Star Wars at all. Lol, I'll have to agree w/the HoTT set of novels from the EU along w/the New Jedi Order / Legacy of the Force story arcs. It'd be hard to jump right in if you don't like or haven't experienced Star Wars in any capacity.

^ Gah. I had it wrong. It's actually called The Thrawn Trilogy. There's a Hand of Thrawn duology too (Specter of the Past, Vision of the Future) by the same author, which is also a really good read.

I read the Thrawn books before watching the movies. tongue.gif It was the books that got me into the movies. Weird, huh?

Yeah, I made the same mistake of quoting you instead of finding the proper titles. For the Thrawn Trilogy, there are the graphic novels as well just in case you don't want to sit through a thousand or so pages.

Timothy Zahn / James Luceno do a bang up job on the SW universe.

There's always the LotR series of books; they're not the best pieces of literature (not to mention, a hard read) but it's something that most book lovers should get around to at least once in their life.

That sounds like alot of stories. The annoying thing is I can't think of many. Maybe a Margert Weis book like Dragons of the Setting Sun or Erogan.

Wow, all of you have great suggestions! I also highly recommend the Thrawn series; most of the books about Star Wars NOT written by Lucas is pretty good. I especially like the stories featuring the Solo kids, haha.

Diana Wynne Jones writes awesome novels, PERIOD. Whether it be sci-fi, fantasy, or just plain fiction, her stories are always a good read. You should read Searching for Dragons, and it continues in a four book series. Very easy and entertaining read about an unconventional princess. Howl's Moving Castle was based on one of her books as well.

Ah, the Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman is excellent. It has heavy philosophical undertones to the story, which gives the story even more depth. Loved it!

And of course, I never heard anything less than praise for the Ender series.

My favorite sci fi/fantasy is by far is the Sabriel trilogy... forgot the author's name. It's about a necromancer who sends people to death and keeps them there instead of what their typical function, which is to bring dead people to life. Oh, and the Queen's Quarterknot Trilogy by Midori Snyder. This trilogy is rare and hard to find, but totally worth it. It's about people who possess the four elemental powers, and how they save the world... I know, it sounds lame, but it's good! Haha

There's a lot of good sci-fi out there, far too many to name... but a few that comes to mind are the usual: Piers Anthony, Mercedes Lackey, Anne McCaffrey... hmm, they are more fantasy than sci-fi, most of the time, though...
