"Cloverfield" is the code name of an upcoming science fiction film produced by J. J. Abrams, directed by Matt Reeves, and written by Drew Goddard. First publicized in advance screenings of Transformers, the secret project is slated for a January 18, 2008 release. Paramount has been carrying out a viral marketing campaign to promote the film.[citation needed]

Production

In February 2007, Paramount Pictures secretly greenlighted the project "Cloverfield" to be produced by J. J. Abrams, directed by Matt Reeves, and written by Drew Goddard. The casting process was also carried out in secret, with no script being sent out to candidates.[1] With production estimated to have a budget of $30 million, filming began in mid-June in New York.[1]

[edit] Marketing

Due to Transformers showing high tracking numbers before its release, Paramount decided to release a teaser for "Cloverfield" before the robot film to build hype. The teaser footage is shot with a hand-held camera to emulate a home-movie style. The teaser did not reveal the name of the film, but it showed a release date of January 18, 2008 for the film. It is not known if the film will carry the same style. The teaser was leaked onto YouTube by people who recorded it with camcorders, but Paramount invoked its copyright claim to have the links removed.[1] Paramount eventually made the teaser trailer available to the public at Apple.com.

Following the teaser's release, USA Today reported the hype among moviegoers regarding the lack of title in its screening and the background of the film itself. Paramount was also reported to have published puzzle websites such as EthanHaasWasRight.com in a viral marketing campaign to promote the film.[3] Based on the sites, the film was speculated to be about Cthulhu, due to the puzzles possessing Lovecraftian themes.[4] Other reported speculation included a Voltron film adaptation, a new Godzilla film or a Lost TV spin-off.[3] The Star Ledger also reported the "seemingly official" website www.1-18-08.com to have pixilated snapshots of people possibly from the film.[5] Paramount sources have refrained from any direct comment with the media about the film.[3]

JJ Abrams is scheduled to appear at Comic-Con on July 26, 2007 as part of the Paramount Pictures' upcoming movies presentation.

Looks interesting, I wonder what the thing is going to be.

Edit: on 1/18/08 (lol)

Its wikipedia article basically spoils the whole movie. Careful http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloverfield

Looks good. There's been a lot of speculation online for the past week and so about it and it seems there's an alternative reality game going on for marketing. I always like that stuff but am never good at solving them. Apparently the sites people have been digging through lately aren't actually connected to the movie and the only real site of theirs that has been discovered is 1-18-08.com. Should get interesting as more facts as are discovered as to what's real and what's fake.

It better not be about some stupid monster like Godzilla. Lol so many people are doing research on this film.
Em_mie
when we saw it, my sister and i looked at each other and yelled "GODZILLA!"

although it could be another monster because i don't remember hearing the godzilla war cry.

It's been announced that the official title for 'Cloverfield' is... Cloverfield. =_= I'm definitely excited for the movie, with all the secrecy about how the monster looks like [an American version of Godzilla]. Here's a great clip for Cloverfield - funniest. trailer. ever.

I don't know about the idea being original. The giant alien in Cloverfield has a lot of similarities to Lavos from Chrono Trigger.
sentuhmentalfo0l
it looks interesting
but i dunno if i would pay to see the movie in theaters
i think i'll just wait for it to come out on dvd
monchichi
Yeah, I think I'll wait for the DVD... mainly because of the handcam. I'm not a fan of motion sickness...
hawaiingkid
i think the so called monsters in the movie are really angry teddy bears lol tears.gif

Just came back from the cinema..

My head finally stopped spinning.

I didn't like the movie very much. But to be fair, their soundeffects and cgi was good. Didn't like the plot. Nor the Cameraman.
ongi3000
i had bad headache during the movie. BUT sound effects were top notch.

HUD!!
unless you have an awesome home theater setup, this movie definitely needs to be experienced at the theaters

lol i c. ...i never seen Chrono Trigger...checked Lavos out and dang ur right! haha...well i guess "being original" doesn't apply to everyone.
Japonesque
i watched it , i rekon the hand held camera effect was pretty good you got into the story.
but the plot of the story was stupid.
you just see everything from the peoples perspective and nothing is explained.
its kinda sad in the end though... i liked the effect of how the audience gets to see the movie that was recorded over when they were happy. it was sad but confusing
iAM_Vindicated
crappiest movie EVER MADE. no plot, horrible acting, the cam corder was hurting my head so i had to close my eyes, ending was terrible.. it left me speechless
ANGELAAA
I actually liked the movie.
but damnn, i was dizzy and felt like throwing up during some parts of the movie -__-
oh&i didn't really like the ending...
LucasBunny
Just came back

.....really cool but there were some dumb parts
dying1004
hahhaa my friend said he had a headache and wanted to throw up too lol

i'll wait for the dvd =]
festo
Really great movie. Great concept. Nice to watch a great movie with a bunch of new faces.

Loved the character development through the old camera footage.

However the monster looked very similar to Sin from Final Fantasy 10......

Dia;
I just came back from the cinema and getting a milkshake from Jack in the Box.

I feel so dizzy... and I felt that I was there, because somehow, I thought that I couldn't even breathe for a second. Lol. But still, most of my friends said that it was horrible... the camera man, no plot, etc. The ending was pretty weird.
JUJU bar
I thought the movie was good... the romance part of it. It was sweet how he confessed his love right before the end and how after that scene it played the old tape and how happy they were.
I think if they had developed the romance part a bit more, the movie could have been more touching or something.

BTW, I am soooooo friggin nauseous. Make sure you don't watch the movie with a full stomach.
Queenie<3
i thought it was good except the ending...i would suggest people take motion sickness meds before they watch. I just wished that they told more details. And the beginning sort of gives away the ending...
sgwannabe
This was the WORST movie ever! I was so sick b/c the whole movie is seen through the eyes of a video camera and it just whirls around. I got so dizzy within the first few minutes, that I almost threw up. I couldn't watch it at all. Also WAY too intense for me. Went out and saw The Atonement instead.
ZeroSlugDS
I didn't mind the camera view but I'm disappointed how we don't even learn anything about the monster as the movie progresses. It's pretty much just a group of people trying to survive a monster attack and they all die. That's it.
blu_smiley
my brother and his friends went to see it yesterday..
halfway through...a few of them including my brother walked out and started throwing up lol
one of them threw up five times haha...
i know i wont be seeing it...
Soy
lol its not bad of a movie, lol i guess its kind of ok, but way over hyped. i felt like they were trying to do war of the worlds, but failed a bit short, i mean the shaky camera thing was .. a bit annoying at first, but it really gets you into the movie, like once the action starts, you're glad that it was with the shaky camera, haha it makes you feel like you were in the movie, but heck my friends and i went to see it, but i was jumping out of my seat during some of the scenes, it was pretty intense. but i felt the plot was extremely lacking and some of the deaths/rescues were ridiculous.
Access DENIED
I thought it was ok. Not really good, but not bad either. I felt that it was short. I was like "that's it?"

Hud was so randomly funny. His statements wouldn't have been funny if it wasn't for the camera. Speaking of camera, I wonder what kind of camera they had. It must've been a really good camera if it survived a helicopter crash, falling debris, and junk.
qt-princess
someone puked in our theater because of all the motion sickness~! the movie was not what i expected...it was weird.

Agreed, definitely a theater movie.

Why is everyone so surprised/disappointed about the ending?
It's not like they would stop the camera style and what the entire movie was based around and go, okay this is why this happened and why this happened. The point was you're in the dark, it was apart of the charm of the flick.
1xviet
pretty good movie... yeah i agree, u gotta see this in the theaters EVERYTHING SHAKES AND ITS FCKING CRAZZYY
i think the reason for the ending is cuz theres gunna be a sequel.
feefee
iloved the moviee but i understand why some people are disapointed in the movie then again u kinda have to expect it from jj abrahms so i went in knowing something like that would happen in the end. but i loved the movie it does get u nauseated and takes abt 10 years away from your life cuse you are in complete panic the whole time.
ahndee
That was one hell of a good movie, except those little creatures that kill the people. I thought the ending couldn't have ended any other way. This movie exceeded all my expectations.
Aozora122
I just came back from the theater and I thought it was a pretty good movie. I didn't feel sick or get dizzy like everyone I went with did. Dang those little creature things were freaky!

Did anyone else notice the creature/alien/monster thing enter the water in the end when the camera jumps back to Rob and Beth at Coney Island on the ferris wheel? Everyone I talked to didn't notice it at all...
tokix7
I hated this movie.
possibly the worst movie i have ever seen.
i would rate it 0/10 and wouldn't reccommend it to anyone.
it made me feel so sick, and i felt like puking.
imo, this movie really had no plot, and i think i wasted $7...
cesqa
i hate this movie..
i felt so sick while watching this movie..
made me get dizzy..

OK. The ending wasn't bad, mind. Someone said that it couldn't have ended any other way? That's true, but it's the friggin' acting that bothered me.

They had to kill off like the two actors who could actually act: Mike Vogel and Lizzy Caplan. Blake Lively should have gotten a bigger part, but of course, she's not as classically gorgeous enough to actually get lines. D: In case, you're wondering, she appeared at the party in the beginning but disappeared on the streets sometime during Statue of Liberty's head rolled over.

The main character guy bothered me so friggin' much. He had absolutely no emotions at all. True, he was determined to save the girl he loved - which, by the way, is the cheesiest subplot ever - so that's why he was so emotionless, but even that moment when he started crying on the phone to his mom, that was some horrible acting. Absolutely no emotions what-so-ever. In fact - call me harsh for this - when he finally started some tears at the end of the movie, I actually felt sorry for him that he had to save those tears in order for the camera to catch it.

Personally, the ex-girlfriend was super whiny, especially at the end. I mean, YOU ARE DYING. Stop whining and make some use of yourself. It was terribly unrealistic too when she was clearly hurt and she was still able to run full speed without any support. In fact, I think she might have been the worst actress in the entire movie. I wouldn't be surprised if they picked her for her good looks than for her acting.

Anyways, I have no idea why they picked those two actors. The main actor guy wasn't as bad as the ex-girlfriend actress, but still. D:

But yeah. I didn't get too dizzy. You sort of get used to it ten minutes in.

The action was great though. I have to give it kudos for using the camera in a way to record the action as you went. It was clever, especially when they used the night light to view the crawling mini's in the tunnel. But yeah, like people already said, action was great, but highly unrealistic in most parts.

If you want to waste your $7, this is the movie you want to go to. HAHA.

Oh, and if you're looking for a better Sci-Fi/action film, watch I Am Legend, and don't waste your time on this.
lingaz
this is by far the worst film ive ever watched in the cinemas imo , it gave me motion sickness from the first scene
onhotwires
I liked Cloverfield. I just don't know if I really wanna watch it again since it made me get a headache.

Anyways, spoilers up ahead guys.

I really wish that when they went to rescue the girlfriend she was already dead. I mean, it probably would've made a lot more people in the theatre groan and get pissed off at the main character trying to go after or whatever, but it would've made the movie a lot less typical. Seriously, she seemed to be okay enough to run a little, so I'm wondering why she couldn't just yank herself off of the pole and leave the building. It's like she took a nap the whole time until he came for her.
