Function wise canon wins hands down. The SD850 IS seems really good... I'd get that if I wanted a(nother) point and shoot camera.

Are you talking about a basic point and click camera?? I would go with an Olympus or Sony...if you are talking about Dslr then Canon and Nikon are popular but I have a Canon Dslr...there is also Pentax.

canon's best for photos...
it has established itself already for many years....
pentax is very reliable too....
personally, i own a canon..
a lot of people i know own canon too...
they are quite pleased...
nikon's good for dslr too...
if you just want a small sony camera,
just make sure it has the carl zeiss lense...
most sony cameras have it now,
just double check for it....
sony's best as video cameras..
canon's best for photo cameras...

I am biased.. go CANON!
But Sony isn't that bad though.

Jul 23 2007, 04:50 PM
i'd go sony if style and video are important to you. canon has great features that'll help you take photos that really pop. so it really depends on your needs. sony takes pretty decent pictures as well, just not as good as canon's. however, in most situations where you have a lot of light, you probably wont notice that much of a difference. it's when you take your pictures indoor, or on a cloudy day that'll allow you to see differences between each camera.
determine your needs, and choose accordingly.

straight up CANON...

i was just deciding between the two over the weekend when picking out a new camera for myself. i got a canon of course. i mean, who would choose a sony over a canon when it comes to cameras?!

though like most have said, if you want cuteness and style, go with sony but otherwise, canon all the way even when comparing specs and prices(sony is overpriced imo).

I personally own about 3 sony cameras and a friend of mine own's a canon. I like his camera better cause it has better self-timer options where you can take 10 shots with self-timer!
But minus the self-timer options, the quality's fairly nice too ):
I wish I owned a canon now.

Have you tried olympus for landscape?
To this day, i haven't seen a camera do a better job than the E-1 with an 11-22mm lens.

Woot, fellow A700 user here! C:
Though, I don't have any Zeiss lens (was looking towards the fixed focal one though, maybe even the 85m?)
Sony SLRS and Sony P&S cameras are two very different things.

for my free lance jobs i cant really work with a low mp camera..
and i really need the full frame..
24mp also really helps with cropping images and printing large prints for landscape...
the new tech is much more usefull..
i cant really work with the old dslrs when coming with landscape..
though im not saying the e-1 is bad
its just not the camera i need..

I get it.
I'm still just amazed at the per-pixel sharpness that some older DSLR bodies get.
with 24mp...who needs optical zoom?
Sounds like you're doing some heavy cropping.
Even with some good amount of cropping, i find 10mp enough, although, i may not be printing 30x20 posters like yourself.
Largest i ever get is 8x10
I would LOOOVE to slap on the ZD 35-100mm F2.0 on a D3x...i'd be mad intrigued with the results.

canon by a LONG shot. sony cameras are mini cooper... the point and shoot ones are at least. seriously. my mom hated her t70 so much she went and bought a canon... and shes not even that picky a person... she just was appalled by the image quality. cybershots are really beautiful cameras though.. what a shame.

canon for sure.. sonys are so annoying : / like, you have to go into a menu just to delete a picture. and the quality doesnt come out that great sometimes IMO even if its high MP. I was actually deciding between one of those touchscreen Sonys and a Canon a couple months ago. SO glad I got Canon. Canon = clear pictures + awesome quality. even the lower MP ones are worth it.
